I am a US citizen, born in Iowa, currently living in Canada.  I am also a naturalized Canadian citizen (dual citizenship).  I've lived in Canada since 1969, and the last place I lived before moving to Canada was Pennsylvania.  When I vote in the US Presidential Election, I vote in Pennsylvania, since that is the last place I lived.

I've done some reading about legal name change in the US, but everything seems to say that you get your name changed in the state where you live.  I don't live in the US.  What would I need to do to get my name legally changed in the US, so I can get my name changed for my SSN and passport?  Any advice/information?

I would start with the SS office or clerck of courts in the last place you held a residence at.

I can't help except I wonder if the US would recognize a legal name change in Canada? Or do you have to go through the process in each country separately?

On a similar note, I have my court date for my name change. On April 7th I will be legally Melody Maia.
and i know that i'm never alone
and i know that my heart is my home
Every missing piece of me
I can find in a melody

My recommendation is to contact the American Embassy or the nearest American Consulate and ask how to proceed.

Change you name in Canada and use that documentation to legally change the records that are held accordingly in the US.  However Robyn and LivinGrey suggestions will give you the information on how best to proceed.
