I'm obsessing over Harry Potter right now so I wanted to start a discussion about it so just say anything.

I missed this in October. I have read all the books twice and have started them again. The new movie was good but very dark-not at all light hearted like the first ones when they were younger. I guess we all have to eventually see the world as it really is-full of hatred and violence as well as love and acceptance and decide for ourselves which side we will be on.

I watched the new movie too, I liked it but it seemed like they took all of the important scenes and crammed them together. The acting was great but the scenes were too rushed. You're right, the more I grow up I see the world for what it is. It can be good and bad. For me it has been miserable but one day I'll be happy. You've got to have hope because if you don't then you won't see anything worth living for. Voldemort rules!!!

I thought the movie was pretty crammed too. But I guess when you already have to make two movies just to fit it all and still don't have enough time it has to be a little smashed together. Personally I was always a fan of the books more until this last movie because the books were darker somehow and the movies seem too... easy going I guess. But hey I can't wait for the next movie to come out and btw kentrie I dunno where you live but if you ever get down to Florida you should check out the Wizarding World Of Harry Potter. Seriously man, it's awesome for a major fan.

The books are better, because they explain things better. My cousin said you would have had to read the 7th Harry Potter book to get the movie. I've read all of the books more than 8 times except Deathly Hallows, I've only read it 4 times. I can't wait to go to the Harry Potter theme park, but I will one day.

Deathly Hallows was honestly the only Harry Potter movie I was satisfied with. Every other film in the series left me feeling slightly disappointed and let-down, they all just strayed too far from the books and left out (what I considered to be) important details. Half-Blood Prince was by far the worst in my opinion! But I liked that Deathly Hallows felt kind of rushed because while I was reading the book I almost felt rushed too. The whole book is just one big cliff-hanger and I feel like the movie captured the feelings of anxiety wonderfully! I was quite pleased with it, but to each his own :)

I still want to see the new movie but none of my friends want to go. My mom will go with me but she hasn't seen any of the previous ones so I feel bad. =(

We'll probably go see Tangled instead I guess

Yp, that one was just one big romantic comedy. Deathly Hallows was really good for depicting all the suffering, angst ... man, can't wait for the finale and (hopefully) killer battle scenes.

Not to take away from Harry Potter but Tangled was such a cute movie.  I highly recommend it.

I did see Deathly Hallow part 1 and I really did like it.  It was really dark though it still had it's light hearted moments.  I especially liked the part with the fire in the jar.  That was hilarious.

I'm working backwards through the range here, please bear with me...
I like all the books except Deathly Hallows but I really liked Part 1 of the movie :)  Half-Blood Prince is my fave book, the film is excellent too (it's my fave so far) as it mixes irreverent comedy with dark nasty horror perfectly :)  Order of the Phoenix is my second least favourite book but I really like the film more as it all but takes the book apart and put it together in a much better storyline and the darkness of the Ministry of Magic is really creepy.  The Goblet of Fire is a pretty dull book, it's overlong and needlessly complex and parts of it just don't make sense, but the film is really good and the duel scene with you know who is just amazing.  The Prisoner of Azkaban is probably my 2nd fave book but it's my 3rd least liked film, it's really good for 2/3 then when they go back in time it just looks like a cheap parody of itself with the occassional good scene stuck in to stop it sucking.  Chamber of Secrets is a a good book and a good film, imo it's the closest adaptation, very little is changed, just simplified and the basilisk fight is really good.  The Philosopher's Stone is an ok book although it does take a long time to get Harry to Hogwarts compared to the film.  The film is very much simplified and loses a lot of the complexity of the book imo but both work in their own ways.  I'm looking forward to Deathly Hallows Part 2 this summer :)

It's kind of inevitable that in a book where a lot of the most important stuff happens in between "the action", like the Harry Potter books and Lord of the Rings, the films can't do a proper job of showing the vital stuff that goes on in the minds of the people in it (the content that makes the books so good).

I think we just have to watch the film and see it as like someone's slideshow from their holiday - you know: "this happened - oh, and then this, and then that..." and fill in the important parts ourselves :).

I've managed to enjoy the films (especially the 3rd one, which was so visually lush) in spite of Daniel Radcliffe, who I think is a bit of a wet hen, lacks the passion that Harry ought to have.

Oh, and if we're competing here, I've also read all the books in French (so now I know what "troll bogeys" are in French! - did they "translate" that to boogers or something in the US edition?)

He doesn't need to do that, I've got it on DVD if he wants to watch it

Don't know why, Hedwig tells us where it is.
Six inches forward and five inches back. ♫

But don't get me started on Harry Potter. I've read the series at least five times... well, save the second book. I've only read it twice. The films (all but the first) have always made me kind-of sad but that's because I'd rather watch a 5 hour film than have anything from the book excluded. xD

got the e-mail this morning to say my DVD of Deathly Hallows pt 1 is on its way to me in the post :)

You are unique in that regard, market research shows attendance going down the more a movie clocks in at anything over 110 minutes.  (And at that the studio is going to want you to cut it to 90)
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

I sat through Return of the King without a fuss, that's about the right length for a movie for me :)
