It's kind of inevitable that in a book where a lot of the most important stuff happens in between "the action", like the Harry Potter books and Lord of the Rings, the films can't do a proper job of showing the vital stuff that goes on in the minds of the people in it (the content that makes the books so good).
I think we just have to watch the film and see it as like someone's slideshow from their holiday - you know: "this happened - oh, and then this, and then that..." and fill in the important parts ourselves

.
I've managed to enjoy the films (especially the 3rd one, which was so visually lush) in spite of Daniel Radcliffe, who I think is a bit of a wet hen, lacks the passion that Harry ought to have.
Oh, and if we're competing here, I've also read all the books in French (so now I know what "troll bogeys" are in French! - did they "translate" that to boogers or something in the US edition?)
