I used to cut my hair myself but the barber I take my kids to is cool about cutting mine too.
Gave me a bit of an odd look but also said he felt the hair suited me. :)

when thinking of it, the first time i cut my hair really short my mum did it. it looked decent and i kept it for a while.
now i just go to some super-cheap place, where most of the girls are still learning, so they are super aware of EXACTLY doing what you want. it's kinda cute actually, and they're all nice and friendly.

I typically go to a male-oriented hair shop like SportsCuts. I don't know if any of you have any of these in the area, but it works out because its a very, very masculine atmosphere and almost all of the hairstylists are female (and usually eye candy). They specialize in all types and deviations of male haircuts (so they aren't going to suggest female styles), and never ask very many questions, also friendly. Most men don't chat it up in the chair, so they typically don't strike up any personal conversations. I'd say try looking for one of those places.

I also met this girl who was schooling for hair. She was great, and would do anything I asked just for the sake of learning. That may be a good route to go, usually the younger generation is more accepting and willing.

Oops didn't mean for that to be empty.. Is there a way to edit posts?
Anyway I was saying that the barber that cuts my kids hair also cuts mine.
While he gave me a bit of a look initially he does think my haircut suits me so..
Maybe that'd be an idea for you too, don't go to a hair dresser, go to a barber and tell them you are having trouble with your hairdresser because you like it short. They might give a look but probably give you a better haircut because mens cuts is what they do all day...

Is there a 'gay' part of town?  If so, go the the barber there, they are used to that.

No, I'm not that lucky! That would make things so much easier. lol

I'll start by apologising for butting in to a guy's forum area... But I'm glad you said this Aranikace, because it saved me saying much the same thing.. And if you think it's hard getting a straight up male haircut, look at it from my point of view, I'm early in my transition and as a result, request a haircut that can be styled either male or female.. Imagine how much confusion that can cause.. I solved it by going to one of the more up market salons..
Compared to your problem, mine seems so small. In a lot of ways, it's much harder for you ladies than it is for us because of social stigma. I have a lot of respect for y'all.

Yea I do this too. I typically get kind of funky cuts so I guess to most people it's a little more 'excusable' lol, I actually go to my cousin to get my hair cut too.
However when I was in college and looking for a stylist who would do my hair more masculine I did a google search for 'funky hair stylists' in my area haha. I had really good luck with it though. Most hair stylists willing to do more crazy styles won't think twice about a manly haircut :)

I had the same experience the first time I cut my hair off..the lady was like "oh honey but your hair is so pretty" I think she damn near cried when she cut it off cause it was so long lol.....I have been lucky to find a lady at a local shop that "gets it" and she even saves my hair for me because I'm a drag king and use it for my facial hair until I start growing it naturally on the T but I'm assuming that will be a while since I'm already 4 months into it and still only have "peach fuzz" lol

hang in there, it gets better

Hum ... just date a stylist ... that's what I've been doing for years.  I get free FUN dye jobs ... and hair cuts whenever I want them LOL

Couldn't you have just clarified you wanted a men's cut? Lucky for me, in Russia a 'short cut' usually means a bloke's style, and I found a hairdressing place that doesn't bat an eyelid, only keeps a disapproving look on their faces the whole time. But the last time she made my sideburns wonky o_O

Bring a picture. I normally go to those cheap "supercuts" type places but then again the last thing I would want is a "manly man" cut. I look like a freakin' dork with hair like that lol. So barbers are out. I do need a stylist - one that really knows her stuff and how to do razor cuts and mod/hip styles. But even still, I always bring a photo because it's a lot easier to just go, this is what I want then try to explain it in non-haircutting-person terms. :)

I'd suggest going to a cosmetology school, I always get different cuts and they are always excited to try new cuts and since they have to have it checked by a teacher it's easier to get what you want. I think part of it is always being confident in what you want and letting your stylist know that, I always get asked multiple times if I'm sure I want my hair cut like that and I tell them absolutely. Hopefully your hair turns out well the next time. :]
