In case some of you missed my original post, I went to Portland to see if it was a place a could truly feel safe and "at home" in while I transition. I live in the deep south USA and simply don't feel safe going through that here. Anyway, I spent much of my time along Burnside which is the downtown area really for everyone who isn't a straight, white, Republican, Protestant bio male. Green hair and chains galore are welcomed! Anyone who can elaborate more on Burnside please do. I did venture out into other parts of Portland, mostly north, though I found it to not be in mine nor probably any of our best interest to stray too far SW and even had some unpleasant experiences in Beaverton which is west Portland. Portland was "weird" but not too weird, just weird enough :D  Beautiful landscapes, small enough to maneuver easily through whether on foot, by car or public transportation but still had a hint of "big citiness" to it (though that's relative since I live in a city of about 4 mill). Most importantly though, I did feel like it possessed enough of a dare I say sanctuary feel to it in that I think I could transition there without feeling too unsafe. CERTAINLY much better than where I currently live. I did find out that Portland does have the largest trans population in the US by the way. Most striking was the friendliness and helpfulness of the Portlanders. My gf and I stood blank faced many a time staring at the hotel-provided map and a passerby would ask us where we needed to go. We only once had to ASK for directions. Someone would offer help and then take all the time necassary until we were set. Truly beautiful people. If you can hear this- THANK YOU PORTLAND!!!!!

All in all my experience was quite positive and I accomplished my goal which was to see if Portland was a place I could live, transition, then continue to live after transition. Im sure I have forgotten to mention some things here so I might be adding things as they come back to me. Also this is just a general summary of my trip. If you are interested in specifics I'd be happy to elaborate. And I invite anyone else to add their experiences with Portland too!

It's one of the great 'outdoor' cities in the US.  People there are really into all that nature stuff, the hiking, camping, white water, ocean beach stuff.  Columbia Sports wear is considered high fashion.  That's a good thing.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Burnside is the main drag downtown (no pun intended).  ;D  And not far from there ( 8th and Morrison) is Portland's Living Room, Pioneer Courthouse Square.  I hope you got a chance to ride Max.  And you were here for Rose Festival .

SO what did you think of our fair city?

I live in Portland and also transitioned here. Definitely a great place to do it all. There is a men's group at the LGBT center once a month you can check out when you come back.
Cheers,
Myles

I moved to Portland from Mississippi about 3 years ago to transition (MtF) and it is such an amazing city.  It was definitely a great choice, and it actually made my androgynous stage of transition very pleasant.  Androgyny is really popular here =)
From my experience, I have encountered far more FtMs than MtFs, especially around the area that I live in (inner NE).
Alasdair, you and I have a similar experience in that we both came from the deep south.  I'm sure you realize just how impairing it can be to grow up there being trans.  I highly recommend moving out here if you are able to (and able to handle the weather).  It will be the most liberating experience of your life.
Feel free to look me up if you come here, and if you and your girlfriend ever need anything or get in a bind.. I have a spare bedroom, bathroom and kitchen upstairs =)

Its good to hear from someone who understands what living in the south is truly like. Thank you for your input Vanna.

I anticipate going through an "awkward" and at best andro stage since I am so small- 5'2, 106lbs.- and that is really what makes me the most nervous about having to transition down here. I would really stand out!  :o

Also, thank you for your spare bedroom offer. Thats so generous and much appreciated ;)

I did ride the Max and I'll tell you what Janet-- If I was a gay man I could meet my husband there! A group of the sweetest and might I say most beautiful men helped my gf and I figure out which stop to get off at to get to out hotel. SO SO helpful. I had a wonderful time in Portland. It is hard to describe on here though. Quite emotional knowing there really is somehwere I could be pretty much safe. A new concept for me.
Went to the Saturday Market on Sunday (awesome) and got a duct tape wallet and of course hit Voo Doo Donuts and shared a Cock N Balls donut with the little lady
The Rose Festival was the evening we got there and I simply wasnt up to it.
