ok so yesterday, a couple of hours before i left work, i sent my HR lady an email saying i'm trans and all that jazz...

i kinda thought i would have maybe gotten a response or some kind of confirmation about it real quick?  so my question to all of ya'll - how long should i wait before i make a phone call?  my company's headquarters is in another state so i can't really do a face-to-face which i prob would have done instead of an email.

i mean she could be out of the office, not read the email yet, doing research?

thoughts??

Any number of things could be at play...to include routing it to legal.

Without knowing the specific content of what was raised in the email, it is difficult to speculate.

.to include routing it to legal

I'd hope so, any manager who's not asking "What's our exposure on this?" is not going to be managing much for very long.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Personally I'd wait at least a few days. She could very well be out of office on holiday or something of the sort. Or, she could be thinking of how to respond. There's plenty of possible things that could have happened.

Giving her at least a few days to think will make any conversation easier for you, and for her.

my email just basically said i've been dealing with this a long time - its time to be myself, integrate my career into my transition, talked about how important a smooth transition is in the workplace blah blah blah and then said that i know this email was short but i look at it as step one towards a successful transition and i would like to set up some time when you are free so we can talk on the phone in more detail.

It sounds as though there were no real timelines being given for them to work with or even what realistic expectations you had...which in a corporate environment, has the potential to leave you worse than at Square One.  My guess is the onus will be on you to follow up with them through a more defined communication...

Congrats on taking one of the biggest steps in your transitions ;D.  I had to do this are three different jobs I work at.  Go big or go home.  Honestly, it was so easy.  I'm a respected employee and a valuable asset to the company, so of course they wanted to accommodate my transition.  I provided them with a binder containing information to assist in the transition period.  I done their homework and research for them.  My companies does not have a policy protecting Trans!  Now, one of the staff is also coming out as trans because of me setting the example.  If you can't find the material on the web list below, shoot me a message with your email address & I will send it to you.

Well this is my video about how I successfully transitioned in the workplace.  Below is the documents I mention in the video.  You should be able to find them on the net, if not I can send them to you.
1. Your Notification Letter
2. The Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association's Standard of Care
3. Coming Out as Transgender
4. The Transsexual Person In Your Life
5. Transgender issues in the Workplace
6. HRC Foundation - Transgender Inclusion in the Workplace
7. Managing Transsexual Transition in the Workplace
8. Model Policy for Employment Transition
9. Model Document for Informing Staff
