I would hate to be an advocate for self medication.  However, my experience with the medical community over the last 40 year is that over 50% of doctors believe you are mentally ill and the preferred treatment is sedatives and antidepressants.  There is a medical ethic that says they have prescribe them if you believe you need them.  However if you bring it up they will quickly change the subject.

Yes, you can over medicate and you can do it with herbal supplements.  A couple of years ago I provided a complete list of the medications I was taking, including a number of Herbal supplements to both my heart surgeon and my GP.  In both cases the nurses deleted the herbal supplements from my chart and before the doctor ever saw them.

A few weeks later I had increased my dose of herbals. When I left the hotel in Atlanta I blacked out and dove into a deep ditch.  I returned to my heart doctor, who still did not have a clue.  I checked my self in the hospital for low blood pressure and they could not get it either.  Finally, the doctor at the hospital suggested that I reduce the prescription blooed pressure medicine I was taking.
That did help and I could drive to work again.

However, I still needed to find out what happened.  Finally I typed in estrogen and blood pressure in goggle and there it was.  Estrogen will lower your blood pressure and I can attest to the fact that over the counter phyto-estrogens do to.  Neither of my doctors still understand what happened.  I told both of  them exactly what happened and they both changed the subject.  They ain't gonna give girl pills to a damn queer.

I still self medicate, but I threw out the prescription blood pressure pills and both doctors.  I did find some more sympathetic doctors in St. Louis. but it is an hour drive and I have little faith in anyone who calls themselves doctors.

This is why Susan's is against Self Medicating.  See Rule 8:

8. The discussion of hormone replacement therapy(HRT) and it's medications are permitted, with the following limitations:

A. Advocating for or against a specific medication or combinations of medications for personal gain is strictly prohibited.
B. Discussing the means to acquire HRT medications without a prescription, and self medication without a doctors care is prohibited.
C. Discussing dosages is strongly discouraged to prevent information obtained on this site from being used to self medicate.
We can not in good conscience condone the self administering of these medications. Not only may self medication be illegal, but HRT medications can cause serious health problems, and many have the potential for life-threatening side effects that can only be detected and prevented with proper medical supervision.

It is dangerous and wrong.  Any medication should be taken with a doctors full knowledge.

Whatever your taking should be listed on your chart (whether the nurse or doctor agrees or not) if things are listed they will make sure to run blood tests to make sure they themselves are cover (a doctor will cover their own "ass").
Nameless here for evermore!;  Merely this, and nothing more;
Tis the wind and nothing more!;  Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore!!"

I hardly think I was advocating for self medication, but I do not think it is supportive of the TG community to deny that it exists.
I was careful to avoid the don'ts listed in rule #8.  I do resent the fact that we list discrimination in restrooms and air planes, but deny that it is wide spread in the medical community.  I have always provided my doctors with a complete list of medications to the nurse. It is my life I am protecting.   The problem is that the nurse was instructed to disregard all herbal remedies.  When I saw my medication list given to the doctor, most of the pertinent information had been deleted by the nurse.  I know what should have occurred but everyone should be on guard when good medical practice is not followed.  Medical incompetence and or discrimination is a threat to all of our lives.  Let us not pretend that it does not exist.  People rarely resort to self medication when adequate health care is available.  Completely shutting out those who have, is a disservice to the community.  The biggest reason for suicide is isolation.

Yeah, disregarding medical herbs is stupid, but you should have more faith in doctors, Bambi.
I don't understand why you don't just see a psychiatrist for gender identity disorder so you can get proper medication.
You mentioned that you're "queer". Does this mean you do not have gender identity disorder? If so then why do you want to change your gender anyways?

I think if you're going to change your gender, you should do it properly since it's very complicated.

In truth, I threw away the herbals at the first of the year.  I did a saliva series for hormones and had the highest estrogen level that they had ever seen. (oops!)  Sometimes I over do things.  Everything else was pretty good and the report said I was postmenopausal.
I did enroll in one of those gender identity clinics back in the 70's spending several sessions with a psychiatrist. I was an emotional basket case at the time.  (a relationship exploded) None the less all I got was antidepressants, which did nothing for me except siphon off my checking account.
The queer reference was actually a humorous reference to the way the bigoted world categorizes all of us.
I do have a therapist and  plastic surgeon and a dentist.  all of which give me a fun time.  I told my therapist she was like my evil stepmother, since she always encourages me.  She also knows everything I am doing.
Getting connected to a doctor is a pain, because I travel most of the time. I spend  about a year in every big town. I found a friendly one, but getting home for an appointment costs me his fee and a days pay or more.  and I already know he will want a bunch of tests and my plastic surgeon already wants another EKG and I am over due for my colesteol and liver tests. Since I had one heart attack I am strictly self pay. and I really would prefer to buy a new pair of shoes.

As for self surgery, I think I am going to skip that one.  (that was a joke.)  The biggest reason for surgery would be for Medicare and that I am getting close to.  At my age, I do not have a lot of single men hanging around.  Most of my friends, in this town are lesbians and everybody is younger.  Go figure!
I do appreciate your friendly remarks.  Love Bambi
