my concern was more that his stories weren't lining up (again) than monogamy now that's sorted out but most of the answers in this thread were made based on the assumption that they were dating.

Yes, I have no problem with people having more than one girlfriend at a time. 
I was just trying to understand him, and help him understand where he confused us at by saying he was dating someone he was just friends with.
