Quite a while ago I knew a teenage (cis)girl who got herself into boy scouts just to prove she could. No clue how she managed. But theoretically it would be possible.

My opinion is that if they were a professional organization they wouldn't be filled with caty women who discriminate in a legit trans case. Also, that anything like that should be handled privately and NOT made public information AT ALL - to other mothers, to other scouts, etc.

I don't believe that any private club, organization or religion should be FORCED by the minority to accept a view point they don't believe in. From what I could tell, the Girl Scouts of Colorado, came out publicly saying they do accept transgender girls - so if they do, then they do and they'll just need to handle any opposition they get on their own. But I feel bad for any trans girl that actually wants to BE in the girls scouts because they'd be "outted" it seems whether they want to or not and probably take a lot of crap from the other girls.

My mom stuck me in girl scouts when I was a kid. I HATED IT. It was disgusting clique and I got harassed constantly - even by some of the mothers - for being a "tomboy". One even said I was a "bad influence". Somehow I just don't think it was an isolated incident. Also, they didn't do anything fun at all. I was bored out of my mind. They didn't do anything they claimed they did and their little "badges" were a joke.

I think their cookies are processed food crap loaded with saturated fat and sugar and they rip you a new ass every year by driving up the price while shrinking the box. When I was in and it was cookie selling time it was like you were working for the mob. There were people calling my mom every single day asking how many cookie boxes I sold that day. Then you had to set up outside a store to try and sell them (it wasn't an option) and if you didn't sell very many you were harassed some more.

So yeah, I'm pretty much not down with girl scouts but whatever.

Ok ... I watched the vid (didn't get to before it was made private on youtube before). Obviously, this chick doesn't really understand transgender/transsexual. It's apparent that they're just boys to her masquerading as girls and wanting to get into her little group and that's just not "safe".

So, I think it's one of those "your argument is invalid" situations anyway. I mean, she doesn't get it - never will probably. Let her have her opinion and boycott whatever she wants. I'm sure she'll have supporters, who also would probably never get what trans actually means.

I sort of liked girl scouts, although I agree with you about the badges being a joke.  I was always in a troop with my best friend, who was an even bigger tomboy than I was (although now she's just a very butch lesbian).  Together we were formidable enough that no one harassed us and we usually ended up running the dominant "clique" ourselves.  Meetings were usually pretty boring, but we spiced them up but making a whole lot of trouble.  I have fond memories of girl scouts right up until Cadettes, which I quit after about two months because none of my friends were in it and it was incredibly boring.  Plus male and female were starting to separate more at that age and while we could run around being little trouble-making tomboys all we wanted in Brownies and Juniors, in Cadettes there were high school girls in the troop and they were all into makeup and all that crap and cared mostly about getting their gold awards for college scholarships and looked down on any middle schoolers who wanted to fool around and disrupt them.  But when I was younger, I had great experiences with girl scouts.

No way. The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are on two polar sides of the tolerance spectrum in the US.

This video made me awaken my want to be a girl scout. Considering I'm young, I'll probably join. I've never eaten a girl scout cookie though. 

I saw this video somewhere else yesterday, it made me really want to buy some thin mints.

it kinda made me angry though to see how children are being raised so closed minded and made me worry for the future.

Also: FtM's are allowed to join boyscouts due to a gender discrimination clause (the same one that allows MtF's and cis males in general to join girlscouts {I was a boyscout})

I was a daisey for a year in kindergarten but I don't remember it at all.  The more I hear about girlscouts, the happier I am that I ended up in 4-h instead all through middle and high school. No stupid uniforms and completely gender neutral.

Well, I gotta say, even before I realized I can't eat gluten, I always thought the cookies were over-rated. Seems like you can do better with Walmart brancd cookies.

On a completely unrelated note, Glutino brand chocolate-vanilla creme cookies are like an Oreo rip-off you can get in the gluten-free section of the local Super Walmart here. They don't taste much like oreos. They are SO MUCH BETTER! I gave some to a friend and he said exactly the same thing. They're more expensive than oreos but prolly cheaper by weight than Girl Scout cookies.

I'm still going to make a donation to the Girl Scouts tho.

I was in Girl Scouts until high school   I did enjoy some things like our trips to the science museum and other neat places like aquariums, zoos, etc.  The arts and crafts, badges, and girl power stuff..not so much.  What upsets me is that this girl doesn't even abide by the "Girl Scout Law" which is even referenced in the "Promise" that we had to do at the start of every meeting, so it's not like she doesn't know about it.  I don't think I have to explain why she's not keeping to this promise:

"I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout."

Huh? As a long term scout (never wanted to be a guide because we were a mixed organisation anyway so I got to be around girls) I have the opposite experience. Any guide organisation I have met has ben more conservative than scouts. But then again, that is Europe so....maybe it's different Stateside.

I love how she keeps saying that girl scouts should not admit 'transgender boys'. It's funny because there are certainly hundreds of transgender boys all across the US in girl scouts and have been ever since the organisation was founded. :-) Huyah!

I stopped watching after she compared a 7 year old transgender girl to an 18 year old man. Yah.....The world us full of annoying little stupid brats. Nothing new there.

Anyway, I think it's cool that girls scouts is open to all kids who present as girls regardless of gender, sexuality, race, religion, ability. Good for them! They have come a long way it seems.

I can't believe it's a private video now! I wanted to see this bigotry for myself... 

But if Girl Scouts supports trans kids... the next time I see them, I'm buying all of their samoas.

Yeah, this chick needs some help. She obviously misunderstands trans people, and she thinks having a trans girl in Girl Scouts is somehow "dangerous". I mean, wtf? That makes no sense!

Good Grief.  Is she worried that she's going to be raped in the night by a transgender girl?  Does she even realize she most likely wouldn't be able to tell? 

This girl needs education and a few minutes in the shoes of someone else.  Also I hate hate hate the argument that I keep on hearing.  The argument that asks why the majority should care about the minority.  In effect saying, there are more of us then there are of you.  So why should we care about your needs?  Don't they realize how inclusive, how limiting, how abusive that is.  Conform or die! 

Oh and I had one experience with girl scouts, when I was a guest of my cousin around 8 or 9 years old.  They mocked my jeans, my clothing, my hair, the way I walked and just about everything else.  One experience was enough thank you very much.

Well, even though Girl Scouts is a national/international organization the kind of troop you end up in really varies depending on where you live and who is running it.  Most of the work is done on a local scale by 'service units' for a town or two that manage all the scouts in that area, so the kind of organization it is depends on what the moms are in your area I've learned.  Personally, I LOVED being a Girl Scout.  We actually went and camped in the woods, learned how to fish, build a fire, did comunity service, and the girls who stayed in scouts after grammar school really were nice people who loved scouting.  My troop wholeheartedly accepted me when I came out as trans and still wants me stick around.  Not surprisingly the local council was less than thrilled at my desire to transition and remain a Girl Scout.  They got pretty pissed at my mom for re-registering me and have made it clear that I can't continue my gold award or stay a scout.  But as soon as I turn 18 I'm gonna register as an adult Girl Scout, they let guys in as adults   

As for the video, some people are just intolerant, whether born or bred that way.  And she doesn't realize nearly all the cookie money goes to the local and regional council barely anything going to national.  The troop that sells them gets a good cut.  We got 70 cents to per box here, but it varies.  Oh silly girl, an all girl enviorment, how utopian.  You forget male leaders, male camp councilors at GS camps, younger brothers that get dragged along, and FTM scouts like me.  It makes me sad to know tha scouts couldn't helpt her become more open minded, accepting, and respectful of others. 

According to her logic ONLY straight girls should be allowed and any lesbians or bi girls should be filtered out as well? She is clueless and I have a feeling someone else wrote what she read. When you read something you wrote yourself, it comes out differently. I put this on my FB page, be interesting to see how much this helps cookie sales
