no one is completely open minded, but if someone were, would that necessarily be a good thing?

You mean having no filters to preconceive with?

Number one, it's not impossible, I have chemically been perilously close to that, and if the consciousness is powerful enough, I do not necessarily see a big downside.

But that kitchen is pretty hot, so stay out of it if you can't cook with they got in there.

Or could you perhaps be suggesting a kind of empty or blank slate thing, where there is no personality after a point, in that case I'd say it's very close to impossible, and only desirable if there is some point of return.

My view is that casting aside the Ego, see: theda bardol, can be a pretty fast track to Enlightenment,  and tends to be desirable.

But maybe I'm crazy...

Being closed minded is a protective function. We are not open to touching fire or jumping from great heights onto solid objects. We are close minded to eating our feces. For the most part, our close mindedness is for our protection. Unfortunately, like disgust, these instincts have been hijacked to prejudice us against people, places and things that have nothing to do with our survival. Again, unfortunately, our brains have a difficult time differentiating between that which we should really be close minded about and those which are just adopted prejudices.

So? I guess my answer is, No, it would not be a good thing to be completely open minded.

Love always,
Elizabeth

After reading Elizabeth's response, I have to say "no". I never want to be open minded enough to eat my own feces.

P.s. this is something that certain mountain gorillas do. It is thought that they do it for the warmth of the 'food' on cold mornings or because there are still nutrients in the poop that they can get after a second pass.  I wonder if they are conscious of the point where there are no more nutrients left?

Anyway, Gorillas are my heroes right after monkeys. And, because I love them, I forgive them for their poopiness.  Blessed are the feces eating apes in the african mountains.

For me being open minded means attempting to accept things that you would not normally accept as acceptable for you. It means accepting people without judgement or any preconceived notions no matter what you have been programmed to believe. It means accepting things sometimes at face value and not reading into them. It means trust in a sense. Many times you have to trust someone else's judgement on how to handle things in the way that best suits them without interference.
I attempt to be open minded, but sometimes it is near impossible. I like to intervene sometime. It is an ideal way to be, but I think that most people will fall short.
The laws of God, the laws of man, He may keep that will and can; Not I. Let God and man decree Laws for themselves and not for me; And if my ways are not as theirs Let them mind their own affairs. - A. E. Housman

My first initial response was yes but after thinking about it no it is not a good thing to be completely open minded about everything.  Some things don't deserve to be thought of in a completely open-minded way such as stealing, murder, abuse, rape etc.  It is okay to be close minded about some things.  If some people were not close-minded about some things then things like racism, sexism, slavery, etc would still be at an all time high like generations ago.  Just imagine if everyone was completely open minded to those sorts of things.

But the other way I see it is that people can be completely open minded about whatever they want until it starts to interfere with the rights of others which just negates what I said earlier.

My answer is, "no."  On one forum I belong to, one of the administrators is fond of saying, "It's good to be open-minded, but not so open-minded that your brain falls out."  I think if some was open-minded to the extent that you're suggesting, then they would likely not be very good at critical thinking or being rational in various situations.  I doubt they would get very far in life on their own or without having someone take advantage of them.  It's easy to take advantage of someone who is open-minded to the point of lacking critical thinking.
