I like a milk tea made with black tea and sweetened condensed milk.  I remember what you mention as being called "pearl tea."  Does that seem right?

That's right. Pearl milk tea.  There are other variants - taro, etc but I like pearl milk tea best.

I just found out less than a year ago that taro and elephant ears are the same thing. Blew my mind.

I used to drink Henry Weinhard's from Portland when the bottling numbers actually meant something.  That was in the early 80's.

Henry Weinhard's from what I understand share breweries these days with another local (or local-ish) beer company, but I forget who. They have an interesting history, and their stuff is actually imo really good for the price.

I like Rogue a lot but they're not even in my top few favorites. Their stuff is pretty expensive and has labels more interesting than the liquid in the bottles. The best across-the-board (not counting one-offs or cool specialties) local breweries in my (inexpert) opinion are Deschutes and Bridgeport.

Henry Weinhards was brewed in Portland by Blitz-Weinhard Brewry.

In 1979 they were bought by Pabst
In 1996 they were bought by Strohs
In 1999 they were bought by Miller; the Portland brewery was closed and production moved to Olympia in Tumwater, WA

I like the Weinhard soft drinks, whose recipes were used during Prohibition.
