It's not stupid, but it would be really hard to maintain.

Not just for the volume, either, but the shaved sides could grow back pretty quickly and then it would probably look stupid.

A lot of celeb/pop hairstyles are for the runway, not real life!

I think you could only pull it off if you have a very theatrical, expressive, maybe flamboyant personality. I think it would look out of place on anyone else.

One of my students has that haircut.  I think it looks dumb when he styles it like that, but other times he puts it in a pony tail and he looks just like Sokka from Avatar: The Last Airbender.  I think it looks cool, especially on a native american kid like him.  I think it looks disgusting when he slicks it back like in that picture, though.
