Went to court this morning for my legal name change.  It was my first time wearing a tie in public.  It wasn't that bad.  The baliff kept looking at me weird when I signed in and the judge had this weird amused look on his face during my case (which was simply a matter of "is all this information correct?  good-- here's your paper").  But it was quick and easy.

After that I went straight to the DMV and had no trouble there.  Got my black and white paper temporary ID and should have my official new license in the mail within 60 days (although it usually doesn't take that long).  A bonus-- I got the red box meaning under 21 taken off my license two years earlier than I would have (I'm 25, but I got my last license a month before I turned 21 so I was going to be stuck with the red box until I was 27).  And I actually think I look pretty close to my age in my picture...

Woot to no more being afraid to buy alcohol or anything else that requires showing my ID because showing it automatically outed me!!!

Now I just need to find a ride over the SS office to get that changed and I can start working on bank accounts and stuff (our SS office doesn't have parking, so you need to find someone willing to drop you off and pick you up.  It's a little ridiculous...).

Some states use mail to be sure that you live where you say you live. WI only does it for minors and probationary licenses.

I don't know why they changed it to mailing you your ID.  Last time I got my license about 4 years ago they printed it out and handed it to me right there.  I always assumed it was because it was cheaper this way than having the machines in the office.  Plus they changed the license.  It used to be just the solid plastic ID card with the info printed on it, but now they put all these seals and watermarks and shiny things and a few clear window cutouts of the state of New Hampshire.  They're trying to make them all fancy probably to cut down on fake IDs or something...  It's more of a hassle and frankly I don't see the big problem with fake IDs, but that's because I think the biggest problem with "underage" drinking is the fact that adults are considered underage in the first place...  But that's ot...

Yeah.  I was very happy with the way the picture came out, especially since they made me take my glasses off and I haven't seen myself without my glasses in a long while-- ever since my eyes got so bad I couldn't see myself in the mirror without them.  The lady actually started getting frustrated at me for not looking into the camera, but I couldn't see the camera...  I like the way it turned out, though.  I don't think I look too fat, which is awesome.  I look more... solid...  Chubby baby cheeks, still, but with a nice thick neck and shoulders to make up for it.  Probably one of the better pictures I've had of myself in a long time.  Good thing, as I'm going to be carrying it around with me and showing it to everyone until I'm 30.

Good deal, Devin, I like the photo. Hey, maybe you should change the state motto from "Live free or die" to "Live free or die from old age driving around the Social  Security building." Hugs, Devlyn

Congrats, sounds awesome! I'll get mine done in a week, hope to have such a great experience!

Question: When you turned in the paperwork, did you get a later (like, a couple of weeks) courtdate, or did they just whack it out right then?
...I think for most of us it is a futile effort to try and put this genie back in the bottle once she has tasted freedom...

Dude, that's great! I didn't realize you were in New Hampshire... I'm in Massachusetts by the Vermont / New Hampshire border. Are you nearby?

I'm in Manchester, so not too close.  But then again I'm used to living in New Mexico where two hours is considered close...

Great news lad.  :eusa_dance:

How many times have you waved the new ID at people just to look at it again? ;D  And signing your name?  I know I couldn't resist it.

The locals are the same about distance here too. Weird.  2 hours just gets the bike warmed up.

And signing your name?  I know I couldn't resist it.

Every one of my notebooks has at leat 10 pages filled from top to bottom with my new signature or variations on it.  I went through some really weird ones and a lot of fairly boring ones to come up with what I have.  My D is pretty much the way I wrote my B on my birth name only without going in in the middle, so that's actually the hardest part because my muscle memory wants me to make that D a B.  And it took me awhile to find an S I liked because I thought the big, rounded traditional S looked a little girly.  I like the sharp one I have now.  I still might play around with it some more.  I've got a long, clunky two part last name that I might try just leaving off of my signature and making it just my first and middle name, but I don't know if that'll confuse people...
