What area are you from? My town never had any real scene as far as metal bands are concerned
I live in UmeƄ. I didn't know you were from Sweden? :)
My experience is from about 12 years ago though, I have no idea what the scene is like now. Some bands never made it out of here, my brother being one example (his was a one-man project though), he was very good at the time, with a very unique sound I haven't heard again. And two bands that got big are Naglfar and Ancient Wisdom. Bewitched too, but that's satanic trash metal.

There used to be a small studio/cafe/club where bands like this came to play. In fact, there were several cafes and pubs and even metal shops where alternative people specifically used to hang out, but now? They've pretty much all shut down. I've no idea where people go, or if the alternative scene even exists anymore. I never see goths and punkers nowadays. Well I haven't done a lot of digging though, admittedly.

Hey Wraith ... what's some of your fav black metal bands? I'd like to pick up some more of that stuff.
Thank you for mentioning Limbonic Art, hadn't heard them before, and this was great! Bloodthorn is death metal, and exactly the kind that I like.

Some black metal bands I like:
(one of the first very influential swedish black metal bands, anyone who hasn't heard them but likes black metal, should listen to the albums The Somberlain, and Storm of The Light's Bane, just saying this for all in here)
(very heavily influenced by Dissection)

(they use trumpets and make it work really well)
(Americans! yay, it happens sometimes! ;P)

But my one all time favourite band is , and I CRIED when I heard they will get together and make new music again. Words cannot describe that band.

I taking up so in this topic now... ;) I'm always happy to give tips about specific type of bands and tracks though

Had this forum not had the auto embed feature, I would have linked a specific song to each band, but as it is, that would get messy :P

[ noembed]Song Title [ /noembed]

That will stop it being auto embedded. :) (remove the spaces in the tags - they're only there so they show up in the code)

I prefer to think of myself as someone who takes what I like and makes it suit me. I'm usually a blend of scene, office, and steampunk. It is kind of amazing how much our clothes can say about us though. Our personalities, financial status, and our work.

Music wise I love my metal, folk, indie-pop and classical.

Speaking of which, I must go shopping soon, both for music and clothes, not to mention make-up.

Thanks Sephirah, didn't know about that one, but it caused double "http" instead even if I left that part out.
Then I realised I should have just used the "short links", as they don't embed, bah. Oh well, I learn ::) The links are in there now.

Awesome thanks! I'm especially loving Naglfar (reminds me a lot of Arch Enemy, who's one of my fav bands) and Sear Bliss. Really like Summoning too.

I'm very mixed. I'm Metal with some Techno and a dash of movie score thrown in.

I guess you could throw me in this mix too.
Actually, my given fashion history and music tastes actually sort of justify that I belong in this mix, but oh well.
I also have larger sized plugs and my cartilage gauged - and back in high school, I used to dye my hair strange colors.

I listen to the music but don't necessarily dress that way. I do like hanging out on the music/alt scene though, so many different people to look at.

I'm not from Sweden. I live in the land of corn and basketball. (Three guesses as to what that could be.)

Sounds like Indiana to me. :p

Goth bloke here, I love Bauhaus, Siouxsie, Joy Division, bands like that. But also Foetus, Dead Kennedys and loads of weird stuff. I dress in black, own a black trenchcoat and big stompy boots, and have had rainbow-coloured dreads. In an ideal world, I'd look like Peter Murphy. In this one, I look like a hobbit in black.

Yeah this kinda like me.
Although the Goth look kinda appeals to me, so I might try that in the future.
Another thing I would like to go for would be the hipster look. I think that might also work out.

My musical tastes trend in this direction, or did when I was younger, but I try to be as happy and silly as possible these days. I think I listen to more Beastie Boys and local indie rock than anything else. And Cab Calloway and the Locust and Beach Boys and M.I.A. and Dinosaur Jr and really I never know what's going on in any scene. I'm always lost. But not sad. Sez I.

I do try not to fall too far into any specific subculture. I don't want to get blindered or typecast or exclusive or whatever.

I'm into the same. Joy Division has been my favorite band for about 20 years now. In the past couple of years I've gotten to see Peter Hook's band The Light perform Unknown Pleasures and Closer in their entirety. I've also seen Bauhaus a few times, Peter Murphy solo a few times and Siouxie too. I've seen her in a small club when she was doing The Creatures, it was amazing. I'm lucky enough to have seen Christian Death when Rozz was still alive, that is probably one of the best shows that I've ever been to. I found a video of it a few years ago, it made my girlfriend start asking questions, I was sitting on one of the speakers and you can see me clearly in some shots, I was wearing a dress and makeup.

Goths are pretty silly. Case in point:

I'm sooooo jealous of you, I've only seen Peter Murphy once. Guess that's what one gets for being born decades too late.

In 05ish or so, Bauhaus came to Alabama as an opener for NIN. I saved up a stupidly large amount of money for the tickets plus a sitter so I could go to the show, and it was hilarious. You could see very clearly who came to see Bauhaus and who came to see NIN, and there was almost no overlap. The whole thing made me feel like I was 16 again though, and I jumped around and hollered the words to all the songs from both bands.

I don't go to shows much though, generally.

I saw Bauhuas around that time, they weren't with NIN though. I would have loved to see that show. Sometime around 1990, NIN was supposed to open for Peter Murphy but they canceled the show for some reason. I did get to see them not too long before that opening for The Jesus And Mary Chain in 1989 in club that held about 300 people.

Miharu Barbie

Hi.  This is a pretty funny conversation; I totally relate.  I'm probably older than most of you.  I grew up in the dawn of the Los Angeles punk scene back in the late 70's and early 80's.  I was a regular at the shows that included The Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, DOA, Agent Orange, MDC, Suicidal Tendencies among many others.  For a couple of years I played steel drums in a harsh punk band called Zendik Farm Band.  It was a wild, crazy, exciting time to be alive!

These days I'm more of a human Barbie Doll than hardcore punker.  Though my waist length dark hair is loaded with bright streaks and highlights of electric pink, bubblegum pink, electric blue, raspberry blue, purple, burgundy, caramel, chocolate cherry, lavender and jet black.  My hair gets a lot of attention whenever I step out of the house.

I still get my yayas off most every day, rocking my house off the foundation with my 300 watt-per-channel sound system, rocking the neighborhood to the sounds of Suicidal Tendencies, The Queers, NOFX, NIN, Fugazi, and Limp Bizkit, among others.  I may be a human Barbie Doll by image, but my heart will always belong to hardcore punk.

Thanks for letting me share.  What a fun conversation!

Peace,
Miharu
