Television evangelist Falwell dies at 73
By SUE LINDSEY, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority and used it to mold the religious right into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University. He was 73.

A colorful figure to be sure which helped set our government back 50 years.

RIP Falwell and may the damage you have done here be mended.
Peace to your family.

:D Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I hope he's found peace at last.

My prayers go out to his family and friends. Regardless of my opinion on his views, it's still a sad day :(

Just a thought: I do not really see it as a sad day just because Fallwell kicks the bucket. Why? you may be asking....simple: If a TS person died and Fallwell heard about it, I would bet you 100 bucks that he would be spewing garbage about that person burning in hell, defying God, blah, blah, blah. So the world is better off without him, and the rest of his ilk should follow suit as far as I am concerned.

He was a human being. He felt pain. He felt love. He hurt, and he laughed. People hated him. People loved him.

*I* loved him... Jerry, the person.

And I MISS him already. I've hated his words and what he did as much as anyone, and yet I'm in tears...

Okay, that is a valid point, to each her own.

Well, momma always said never speak ill of the dead, so I won't repeat here what I posted on Craig's List. That guy caused an immeasureable level of pain and suffering in the G & L community. So, I will leave it with karma is a b**** Jerry. Welcome to the other side in your next life.  >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D

It's a sad day because it didn't happen earlier, before he did all the damage he did.

I do not wish death on anyone regardless of who they are or what they have said/done. I do not celebrate a persons death.

I try to rise above their ugliness, not swim in it.

I couldn't agree more.

I too will not speak ill of the dead.

My most fervent hope is that right now he stands before Goddess and realizes all the things he has done.

May he find forgiveness in her infinite love.

Following my bliss.

I'm ambivalent about this.

Sad for his family and his little dog too (if he had one),

I don't blame him for the results of his leadership within his community, I kind of blame those who followed him and who provided the power he needed to have the effect he did. The list of pinheads includes ronald raygun and many elected officials who really have no insight into the human condition.
It's likely that others will rise to take his place of leadership amongst the unwashable. They will be followed just as easily.

We need to mourn the continued death of sensibility.

Very sad.... even if he did hurt a lot of people...

I won't speak ill of the dead, and well, though I may not have had the best thoughts of the man... it's sad when anyone dies...

Hate begets hate, people... you can't stop people from hating you just by hating them back, gotta rise above all that and be the better people, and LOVE.

I love that!  Be the better people!  it could be our slogan.

I honestly have mixed feelings.  I pray for his family and those who loved him, that they may be comforted.  As one Christian who often found myself at odds with what he said, I do still respect him in a lot of ways.  He was consistent.  He was pro-life, but he didn't just rail against abortion like so many.  Instead, he spent massive amounts of money to found a home for mothers from abused homes and those who had been kicked out of their houses.  He once came to a meeting where I was and spoke.  I thought it would be like going into the snake's den.  But we got to see a side of him that was much different than the one in the TV spotlight.  And his organization does work very hard in the adoption process.  These, IMHO, are very good things, and I believe in giving credit where credit is due.

Germany, in the twenties, had some real serious problems getting their trains to run on time. Hitler solved that mess.  And the populace gave him great credit for it.  It gained him a good deal of popularity.  Yes, they gave him credit where credit was due. But what did THAT gain them?

If a man is called of God, then how can that man have such a vile contempt for [some] of God's children, like US?  Yes, we should take a look at his actions, and exactly the impact they have had on our country.

I don't know how much argument I'll get from what I am about to say, but the moral majority has brought a horrible movement to this country and a tremendous loss in human life as a result.  We are now one of the least tolerant first world countries. We have a very low literacy rate.  And our government, fully supported and now run by the "moral majority", sponsors corporate greed on unprecedented scale.  Not since the times of the robber barons have we cared so little for our people.  We deny them healthcare, take their jobs, and leave masses in unrequieted poverty.  And now, our Christian soldiers are marching onward in the middle east while the moral majority attempts to hijack our constitution.

I really don't believe that this is what Christ taught or wanted.  To be fair, Falwell is not the principal cause of our woes.  There are many who share the glory with him.  I believe that he followed his beliefs and he tried very hard to do what he thought was just.  He worked on his last day in his cause for what he believed was righteousness.  I believe that he spent the money given in donations to the worthy causes he believed in rather than stashing it in his own pocket.

So, to the man and his family, I share my condolonces.  But I can not shed a tear for this man. For he was just a man who led us down the proverbial primrose path.  Faith based beliefs can not be the measure by which we govern. That ultimately brings out the very worst in any government. I wish that he had stayed clear of politics. For then, I would likely have had some admiration for his deeds.

So... does this mean that I have a cold, black heart?

All you can say is RIP.  I was taught not to speak ill of the dead either because if you do, they come at night and pull your feet.  And yes it is true!  :icon_nervious:
