My advice is to travel...wherever you want and wherever life takes you.

Abroad has great places, definitely Rome is one of them (but be ready for huge crowds of people), Paris...Oh, one of my favorite cities, London has its edge and is really nice, Geneva, lovely but try to avoid in winter (horribly cold...at least for a Spaniard like me), Austria...and there are sooo many more.
My favorites are in Africa, Maputo is a great place. Lived there for some time. Freetown or the west coast of Africa is really nice...although a bit risky, Libya is one of the undiscovered wonders I have been. It is simply beautiful, and its people are welcoming. I went there through the border from Tunisia via the village Tattaooine (may the force be with you ) and yes, also visited the Star Wars sets that still remain there. Btw, Tunisia is also a great and beautiful place.
I have had my fair amount of countries, but there are many more to see...time will tell.

But, I have to agree that even though I have travelled round the world, I still enjoy inside travels. There are so many little places to discover in our areas, states, countries, that you don't need to go round the world to be astonished.

I have travelled up to the point of having to renew passport every year due to work and leisure because I ran out of pages for visas.

Just find your moment, find your travel companion and go, simply go.

In my wedding vows I used a saying that I read in an airport in Kenya:
If you want to travel quickly, travel alone, if you want to travel far, go with someone.

I like to travel and I like to go far...

So, just pick the place and go for it. Sometimes if you wait for the perfect moment, it never comes...so just travel and enjoy.

My problem is I've rarely had anyone to travel with and I'm nervous travelling solo. It is something I think I want to address when I get out of this bloody closet! When I am Sarah I am brimming with confidence, I think I would love to travel solo (even though it would have it's risks for a lone woman) I think I would start simple, probably just hire a little Scottish cottage for a week and go hiking, exploring with my camera or maybe to Mull to photograph the wildlife. Once I have built my confidence I think I can try going abroad again.

I have not explored much of Africa, but South Africa is a very nice place if you want nature, wildlife and scenery while also being close to cities and such.
What I definitely can recommend is Japan. If you have the opportunity then just go there. So different. So much cultural things to see, so much fab food, so very little crime, ...
And China. You can probably fill years of exploration there. Their political system is so-so and I cannot say anything about trans acceptance there, but other than that it is an endless source of wow-experiences.
In Europe: España, por favor! Super climate (but avoid june-aug), fabulous food, nice people, ok prices levels. I have been some 15-20 times in Spain. Madrid, Mallorca, Alicante, Donostia, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Marbella, ...

I've been in NY, DC, New Orleans and a bit here and there in southern Florida.

Was thinking about New England before the current administration came to power. Also looking at roadtrip from Montana and westward to the sea.

I am hearing that it can be more difficult now crossing the Canada USA border at some points in a car as a transgender person. 

I hope that is untrue.  If it is, it may not be good to rent a car and use the Alcan highway now.

If you are visiting Europe, head East!

The Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) or the Balkans (Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, North Macedonia, etc, etc). Far fewer tourists than in the West, many unheralded and very impressive archaeological and historic sites, great scenery, good food, friendly people and generally much cheaper than Western Europe.

And use a local agent to book your accommodation and transport arrangements.

Very true. Although I live close by, or perhaps because of that, I've only been to Romania, Czechia, Hungary and a few contries in the balkans. But everyone I know that has been there say that the Baltics are really nice
Hungary should be omitted from the list of go-there countries. It is possibly the most trans-problematic country in Europe, though now with a new govt so maybe things will improve. Slovakia is also on the trans-problematic list.

My list  is:
Madeira, Ibiza, Malta, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Hong Kong, China and USA.

Over half for work though!

I'm a map person. I just want to see everything on that map.

Back when I was healthy a lot of the places I visited was by bicycle.

You get to see so much more at a slower pace, and you can stop and check out places much easier.

If you have ever watched the Tour De France or Giro d'Italia bicycle races, you get to see so many beautiful places.

Being married to a doctor of history also opens your horizons.

I know a lot of Aussies who have seen a lot more countries but not so intensively as I  have travelled

I do not consider myself well travelled but I wonder if the Americans among us can dispel the myth that most Americans have never left the US? I'm betting most of you have.

I have been to France, Monaco, Majorca, Ibiza, Italy, Switzerland The Netherlands, Croatia (then Yugoslavia), and Greece. This I would class as not very well travelled. No real exotic long distance destinations and all in Europe.

Definitely a myth, only a smaller subset of US citizens have never traveled abroad (23% according to Google). But that is far higher than the amount of UK citizens who have never left the UK. So you're a much more travelled society (if we're counting border crossings) than the US.

But the 50 US states might as well be 50 different countries when it comes to culture, sights, and experiences. A direct flight from Boston Massachusetts to Hawaii is 11-1/2 hours, and you have never left the US or needed to have a passport.

My travels include Canada, Iceland, Ireland, the UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, West Germany, Italy, Greece, and Spain.

France was because of the TDF. You see beautiful places on TV and want to see it all.

I've riden all over and love the country. I went back with my wife to show her what I saw and she loves it too.

PNG was because of my wifes former research. She wanted to see places she had written about.

Beautiful people trying to survive with not much.

We dropped off a whole heap of educational stuff and sporting goods.

Yeah, that's my thoughts Dev, I think it is a lazy stereotype. When I'm abroad I often hear the American accent, it's common in York and Edinburgh in the UK as well, so there are definitely more than a few wandering around beyond US borders, you included!
