AI Overview
The city of Leicester in England is pronounced "Lester" (IPA: /ˈlɛstər/). It is a two-syllable pronunciation, despite the three-syllable spelling, with the emphasis on the first syllable and a silent "cei".

How do British people pronounce Worcester?  (also a city in the USA State of Massachusetts near Boston)
AI Overview
In the UK, Worcester is pronounced "WUSS-tuh" (sounds like woos + tuh), with the stress on the first syllable. It is /ˈwʊs.tə/ in IPA notation. The city name is a two-syllable word, often mistaken for having three or four syllables by non-natives, as the "ce" is silent.

Gloucester is pronounced GLOSS-ter (also a city in Massachusetts, USA)
). It is a two-syllable word with the stress on the first syllable, where the "ces" is silent. It rhymes with "foster" and follows the same silent-syllable pattern as British place names like Leicester (Less-ter) and Worcester (Wuss-ter).

AI Overview
Worcestershire sauce is widely known as the condiment no one can pronounce. Often referred to as "the big W" or "whore-sauce," it is actually pronounced "WUSS-ter-sher" (or "Wuh-stuh-sheer"). Originating from Worcester, England, this savory, fermented condiment is a complex blend of vinegar, anchovies, molasses, and tamarind.

Well I would pronounce it as WUSS-TUH or WUSS-TUH-SHUH. But then I'm from the North East where we have a very distinct accent and dialect, supposedly the oldest in England apparently. Maybe Lauren and Charlotte could chime in with the way they say it

Quote from: Stottie Girl on April 09, 2026, 12:20:55 PMWell the universe can stop now thanks, I got the message! Thanks Kelly but if you had a magic wand could you turn me into the girl of my dreams instead, sod the sciatica! Fed up with it really it's been going on since September.

Talking of magic wands one of my former customers had an original Harry Potter wand from the first movie. Her son worked as a special effects artist for the movies and created them. It didn't work sadly, I tried it.
She also had a silicone mould of Angelina Jolie's lips (no idea why!) and mini me's fist from Austin Powers. Her son also made the batsuit from Batman Begins and kept it. He said it will be his retirement fund! Complete with pic of him and Christian Bale at the fitting, signed by Bale!

Batman Beyond was one of my favorite movies.  It was the closest Hollywood got to portraying Batman correctly.

My favorite is The Dark Knight. I just watched it again last night. I'm a huge Heath Ledger fan (RIP). His portrayal of the Joker is the best, in my opinion.

The problem is Danielle, if you go 10 miles down the road in the UK they will have a different accent and likely say everything differently and use different words ha ha! You can't win!

Where I am the accent is known as Geordie (I don't have a strong accent but can turn it on when required) Geordie has some similarities with German, Danish and Nordic. For example we would say "Am Gannin Hyem" which means "I'm going home" Norweigian for home is "hjem" and pronounced the same, Geordies say "Bairn" for child, Norweigians and Germans say "barn" We say "Canny" which means "nice" (though it can mean several other things depending on the context and often baffles strangers) Norweigians say "Kanning" with similar pronounciation.

An example sentance could be "Av had a canny neet so am gannin hjem to see wor bairns and grab some scran cos am propa clammin"-  Meaning "I've had a nice night but I'm going home to see my kids and get some food because I'm hungry."To be fair Geordie can catch out a lot of Brits too! lol!

There are those that speak English correctly and those that don't. This can easily be determined by asking the person in question to say the words bath and grass! 😂

Well "correctly" is subjective! I would say it determines if you are a Northerner or a shandy drinking Southerner! lol!

Which side of the fence do you reside on? You've lived both North and South

Oh to be honest I'm a mongrel these days! There are little bits of Yorkshire in my generic nowhere twang. I use the word 'owt' a lot. But I'm also a bit urban using words like 'innit'. But I do pronounce bath and grass the southern way 😅

When I'm trying to talk feminine I just gravitate to posh sounding. Not really what I want!

Tsk Tsk there's no r in bath! It's not barth! And people say we can't talk properly, sheesh!

Bugs me when Southern people say "Newcarstle". No, it's New castle because they built a new castle there! Interestingly it was called Gotham town before NYC too!

I have heard them claim they paahked theh caah in the yaahd.

I like the scene in The Heat (Melissa McCarthy) where Sandra Bullock is trying to understand them as they ask her if she is a Narc (a Naaahk).
