I never knew the writer of Father Ted was a trans hater. Shame as I loved that too.

I guess my list of favourites is a little different! Keeping up appearances, Last of the summer wine and Some mothers do have em being ones I love.

Graham Linehan is the writer. Doesn't change the fact that the comedy is brilliant. I'm not one for cancel culture.

I grew up around the birth of alternative comedy. Comedians like Alexie Sayle (still love his podcasts) and later Stewart Lee (one of my favorite comics) or earlier comedy shows like Blackadder, The Mary Whitehouse Experience, Red Dwarf. But it's surrealist humour that gets me the most. Things like the IT crowd and Toast of London or The league of Gentlemen. Totally nuts.

I used to watch red dwarf loads as a kid! Loved it. Trying to get Kryton to say smeg head 🤣

Quote from: Stottie Girl on April 11, 2026, 07:37:53 AMMy football (proper football!) team is playing on TV tomorrow afternoon so I'll be keeping my dad company for that but hopefully Monday-Wednesday I will have an opportunity to get out and explore again.

I have to ask, Sarah. What football team is that? I am not huge on the sport but I know the rudimentary stuff. And... I mean my natural instinct is say Newcastle, haha. Please correct me. <3

Yup. This is why I get you and Sarah, Charlotte. We are birds of a feather. Red Dwarf was my go to. Sarah... I love your taste also. I will admit some alternative stuff was a little bit "too" alternative. Shows like "The Young Ones". I just thought that was a more modern version of Monty Python. And equally silly.

Blackadder, absolutely. Rowan Atkinson is just.. he's one of a kind.

Did you ever watch "Peep Show" or "Spaced", Sarah?

Yeah it's Newcastle United. We have no choice, We pop out the womb and are handed our black and white stripes immediately. I'm not a die hard fan when compared to other geordies but football is different up here. We only have one club for the whole city. It really is united. Every man women and boy follows the team. When they do well everyone is smiling the next day, when they loose you can see it on peoples faces.

The ground is right in the heart of the city centre so when they are playing, it doesn't matter where you are in the town centre you know when we score because the roar is deafening everywhere. The ground is often called the cathedral on the hill and it is for good reason.

Oh my god Lauren! we were cut from the same cloth all right! They are two of my most favourite shows of all time. One of my favourite things is to watch americans reacting to peep show, it is so funny to see their jaws drop at the cringe!

Spaced might as well be a documentary on our lives for anyone who grey up in the 90's. Simon Pegg and Nick Frosts glorious debut (not counting peggs buttercup syrup advert)

Girl, every time I speak to you, I think I get you more, haha. It's rather awesome. <3

Both of them are shows that are somewhat uniquely British. I have kind of a thing for David Mitchell, though. I think he is singularly amazing.

I will say, however, for anyone who ever liked Red Dwarf.. there was another 90s show with Chris Barrie, called The Brittas Empire. 🔗 [Link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brittas_Empire/]. It was very much of its time.

Yeah David Mitchells rant's are a thing to behold. Big fan.

I remember the Brittas empire. Set in a leisure centre. It was pretty good too, you're dragging some oldies up there.

Must be honest with you I never did like The Young Ones either, or Bottom I never liked that side of rick Mayal. Much preferred him as Alan B'stard in The New Statesman, Lord Flashard or in the Comic Strip presents.

I will say, Bottom was somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine. He played off with Ade Edmondson incredibly well. It was pure slapstick, haha.

Girl, you're talking to someone who grew up on 60s and 70s radio comedies. Never think you're an old fart, okay? Because I will see you, and raise you "Steptoe & Son" :P

It's very much like the two Sheffield teams. United and Wednesday. People are born into it. I was never too much bothered with either, honestly. But one of my friends in school was a die hard Blade, so I kind of just went with it.

Haway the lads! <3 All I know about Newcastle is Kevin Keegan and Alan Shearer.

Hey we have to have some differences otherwise it would get boring!

I listen to radio 4 too. I remember the Hitchikers guide on the radio before the TV series. I still listen to just a minute or I'm sorry I haven't a clue, The news quiz etc. Alexi Sayle sometimes has some funny shows on there too.

Well like I say we don't have a choice. We only had a football team growing up. I know we have the Falcons rugby team now but they weren't around until recently really. Northumberland doesn't have a decent county cricket side and Durham didn't have a notable team either until more recently. Must get round to going to Chester-le-Street one day. The Tyne Wear derby is fierce too. It's pretty unusual to have two cities who hate each other just 12 miles apart. So there is constant banter going on.

The fact that you can share this with people is magical, Sarah. I kind of always admired that about sports. Doesn't matter what it is. Who is obsessed with it... it's a medium which brings people together.

I need to ask something, though. Newcastle Brown Ale... is that an actual thing or a myth?

Yeah "the dog" as we call it is real. It's been brewed for over 100 years and still going strong. No longer brewed in the city centre though or in newcastle to be fair. Shame I used to like the malty smell of the brewery wafting through the streets of the West End. Be careful with it though, it's loopy juice! apparently it became popular in the states for a while too.

I mean I am sure it probably has something to do with "Hair of the dog"... but I would rather hear it from you than an AI bot.
