I personally don't think much of Halifax. I avoid it as much as possible.
Most tourists go to the South Shore, where Peggy's Cove is. It is very pretty, especially if you stay off the main highway and go through the smaller towns and villages.
The Annapolis Valley (where I live) is beautiful and bucolic. It is also historic, with Port Royal having been founded in 1605. (Okay, I know that, to a Brit, 1605 is like the day before yesterday, but it's pretty old by North American standards.) Annapolis Royal still has some old buildings that date from back then, and the old British fort is a National Historical site.
The French Shore is home to a vibrant Acadian French culture, settled by Acadians who were allowed to return several years after they were expelled by the British (mid to late 1700s).
The Fundy Shore is worth a visit, to see the highest tides in the world: 14 - 16 metres (over 50 feet). There are restaurants there that specialize in serving lobster.
Cape Breton island is worth a visit by itself. Right now (Thanksgiving weekend) is usually the peak of the autumn colours, and Cape Breton has the best colours in the area. Many people plan their visits around them.
