Lady Gaga at least briefly mentions it in "Born This Way".

Good one. I'd also like to add "The Crying Game" by Boy George from the motion picture of the same name. I REALLY love the movie. Another one is "Traveling Through" by Dolly Parton from the movie "Transamerica". :)

QuoteGarbage has a lot of songs about gay and TG stuff.

They really do!  I know for a fact that Shirley is very TG friendly :)

There are so many hints in the lyrics to quite a few of their songs, part of the reason their music has got me through many hard times over the years!

Same here. I hate I've never gotten to see them in concert.  I was hoping they would come somewhat close to where I live in the "Not Your Kind of People." tour but no such luck.  I'll have to see what the 2013 USA part of the tour offers.

How cool is that Eleanor!!

Was that in Scotland?

I talked to her for a bit in 1995 when they were in Seattle doing one of their very early gigs as Garbage, she was very sweet :)

Keith Mina Caputo's album "A Fondness for Hometown Scars" is pretty much entirely about her being TS.

A little morose in places but worth a listen, the highlights for me are Got Monsters and Silver Candy

It was! My parents were friends with her while she was a part of Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie here, before she left for America to join Garbage. I actually didn't make the connection until years later despite being quite fond of Garbage. I remembered my parents' friend called Shirley who babysat us sometimes, but I was so young at the time (maybe three or four) and had forgotten most everything else about her besides her name. Then one day a Garbage video was on the music channels here:

Mum: Oh, that's Shirley's band, right?
Me: Huh? Wait... THAT'S SHIRLEY?!

Bit of a shock. :'D I don't know if my parents are still in touch with her. I think my dad might be.

Haven't seen it posted but how about Karma Chameleon. Every time I hear it I think of people who are transgender.

I guess the thing about art/music is it's so up for interpretation. It'll mean what it means to you.
Having said that, this song on repeat helped me go full-time.

-       The longest journey a human must take, is the eighteen inches from their head to their heart    -

it might not be about being trans but the cliks "i'm not your boy" generally made me think of those people we got dear but who cant see who we are.

Somebody's already named it, but I like to think of "Reflection" from Mulan as a good song to refer to people if they want a sense of what the transgender experience is like. It works all the better since it wasn't intended to be about transgenderism per se.

Surprised nobody mentioned Namoli Brennett yet - particularly We Belong.  It starts:

"Here's to all the tough girls,
Here's to all the sensitive boys.
We belong."

In a more general sense, Cyndi Lauper and True Colors.

"What it feels like for a girl" Madonna. About how boys secretly want to know how it feels for a girl.
"Man, I feel like a woman" Shania Twain. Not about TG per se, but its a good anthem, at least for me. I've danced to this song more times than I care to admit.
"Who we are and who we want to be" Xandria. A good rock n roll song with an identity/masks theme.
"Anybody listening?" Queensryche. About the heartache of being ignored and marginalized and wondering if anyone hears your side of things. Not TG focused, but still relevant. From the album Empire.
Someone already mentioned "Reflection" from Mulan. Christina Aguilera did a longer version.
"I am I" "Damaged" and "Someone Else?" from Queensryche's Promised Land album are evocative of gender dysphoria (at least for me).

As I watched the 121212concert tonight one song stood out for me!

It was Alicia Keys new song "Brand New Me"

Read these lyrics! I know it's a break up song, but it has a whole different meaning for us!!

It's been a while, I'm not who I was before
You look surprised, your words don't burn me anymore
Been meaning to tell you, but I guess it's clear to see
Don't be mad, it's just the brand new kind of me
Can't be bad, I found a brand new kind of free

Careful with your ego, he's the one that we should blame
Had to grab my heart back
God know something had to change
I thought that you'd be happy
I found the one thing I need, why you mad
It's just the brand new kind of me

It took a long long time to get here
It took a brave, brave girl to try
It took one too many excuses, one too many lies
Don't be surprised, don't be surprised

If I talk a little louder
If I speak up when you're wrong
If I walk a little taller
I've been on to you too long
If you noticed that I'm different
Don't take it personally
Don't be mad, it's just the brand new kind of me
And it ain't bad, I found a brand new kind of free

Oh, it took a long long road to get here
It took a brave brave girl to try
I've taken one too many excuses, one too many lies
Don't be surprised, oh see you look surprised

Hey, if you were a friend, you want to get know me again
If you were worth a while
You'd be happy to see me smile
I'm not expecting sorry
I'm too busy finding myself
I got this
I found me, I found me, yeah
I don't need your opinion
I'm not waiting for your ok
I'll never be perfect, but at least now i'm brave
Now, my heart is open
And I can finally breathe
Don't be mad, it's just the brand new kind of free
That ain't bad, I found a brand new kind of me
Don't be mad, it's a brand new time for me,
Just a "California Girl" trying to enjoy each sunny day

I think this song could be read as meeting the first person who truly accepts you as you are:

And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman
My mother once told me she would have named me Laura
I'd grow up to be strong and beautiful like her
One day, I'd find an honest man to make my husband
We would have two children, build our home on the Gulf of Mexico
Our family would spend hot summer days at the beach together
The sun would kiss our skin as we played in the sand and water
And we would know we loved each other without having to say it

At night, we would sleep with the windows of our house left open
Letting the cool ocean air soothe the sunburned shoulders of our children

There is an ocean in my soul where the waters do not curve
There is an ocean in my soul where the waters do not curve
There is an ocean in my soul where the waters do not curve
There is an ocean in my soul where the waters do not curve!
From the Ocean by Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! (former Tom Gabel) my personal Trans hero.
