Kia Ora Jamie,

The most common belief of the origin is Prisoner Of Mother England  P.O.M.E
Remember back in the day England used to ship the convicts to the colonies ( However at first the "undesirables" were shipped of to the Americas but after the war of independance, Oz was used)

Metta Zenda :)

Always wondered why Canada was never a destination for transportation.

The U.S. state of Georgia was founded as a "trustee colony" for the "worthy poor" in 1732.  I think the weather was better than in Canada.  Besides, in those days (early 1700s), much of Canada was French.

Kia Ora Gwynne,

Too bloody cold perhaps  ;) ...As Jamie said...Possibly the French colony there might not have warmed to the idea...

Since we're talking about convict transportation, it occurred to me a while back that Pride & Prejudice was set around the time all of that was happening. You'd never know it from reading the book though, the gentry and well to do would never bother themselves with such rabble. So that means, hypothetically, that while Darcy and his dirty rich mob were poncing around their mansions my 17 year old great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother was being transported to Australia - not for being a prostitute (which she was!) but for rolling some well to do john/client for his wallet and watch. Go grandma! (She was pardoned/released after a few years, married, widowed, remarried and had about 10 kids!)

Sadly, our TV shows often do leave a lot to be desired. Even so we can surprise ourselves from time to time with a quality show. But you don't have to watch our stuff even if you live here, other than Doctor Who, my preference is for US scifi and fantasy and cop shows! I'm very unAustralian it would seem.

As Peter Ustinov once said, never be ashamed of being from convict descent, but if your were descended from a jail warden ....well!

To be honest the Canadian accent sounds a lot like certain American accents. But I've long since learned that Canadians hate being asked, "so which part of the States do you come from?" I worked with a Canadian woman for a number of years and because of that I've learned how to differentiate Canadian accents from the American and usually get it right most of the time. Although last year a met a young woman from Quebec - she sounded French to me! She was in Australia to improve her English.

No offense to any Québécoises who might be hanging around here but they definitely do not sound French... :)  Actually many Québec films (often excellent BTW) are shown with subtitles in France. I myself can handle any of the regional accents I have so far encountered in France, Belgium & Switzerland but during a couple of business trips to Montréal last summer, which involved meeting a few true blooded natives, I litterally couldn't understand a word.

For those who are up to it (VM for example???), here is some Québec French (BTW, don't forget your Credit Cards  ;))

And just to put this thread back on track, any aspiring emigrants to the Antipodes can use this to start brushing up on their language skills...

Hugs
Donna

New France (Canada) falls to Great Britain: 1759
American Independence: 1776   With great help from vengeful French who actually got their act together for a few years before chopping all their officers heads off during the revolution (1789)

Australian Penal Transportation: 1788–1868 With a great contribution from the Irish , who were no longer getting much help from the French , thus explaining the number of lily white (Pink?  ;)) skinned Australians you run into...

In spite of my Bavarian last name, I'm mostly descended from spud-eating Micks.  Faith and Begorrah, so ye thinks we be a might pale, do ye?  ;) :D ;) :D

In spite of my French citizenship , I'm totally descended from spud-eating Micks but, having adopted a typical French diet of frogs and snails and the occasional puppy dog's tail, (*) I have  progressively developed a more Mediterranean type complexion. Life is weird, non??  :) :) :)

(*) Diet not recommended for MtF's which may explain why there are far fewer French than Aussies on this forum.

Sounds familiar. I have a German last name, but no German ancestors. They were all highlands sheep-raiders, starving potato croppers, and pogrummed Russian Ashkenazim.

Welcome to Susan's Tiffany great to see you here.
You will have a good list of all us in OZ which might be helpful

I know that there are a few more here who have not thrown their Bra or speedos in to be counted yet.

How many times did you count Cindy? She's worth at least 10 for SA.
So long and thanks for all the fish
