Since we're talking about convict transportation, it occurred to me a while back that Pride & Prejudice was set around the time all of that was happening. You'd never know it from reading the book though, the gentry and well to do would never bother themselves with such rabble. So that means, hypothetically, that while Darcy and his dirty rich mob were poncing around their mansions my 17 year old great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother was being transported to Australia - not for being a prostitute (which she was!) but for rolling some well to do john/client for his wallet and watch. Go grandma! (She was pardoned/released after a few years, married, widowed, remarried and had about 10 kids!)
