Being in a decidedly sedate corner of the UK, where this isn't really the done thing, I find the idea of gun ownership a very weird thing. If someone owned a gun where I live, they'd be looked at in a very odd way, lol.

However I'm genuinely interested in why folks who have posted here decide to own a firearm. Is it for protection? Because you like the aesthetics? Because you can? Or something else?

That is because you have been cowed and conditioned to not have that expectation.  But I bet there are probably more firearms in your area than is widely known, even if they are the modest sporting gun or antique.

Yes.  ;D  Beyond their practical applications, it is because they are loud and stinky and fun. They are precision machines with refined engineering that has evolved over the centuries.

All of the above!

Sephirah, anyone who consistently puts up the most intoxicatingly lovely avatars and makes such deeply thoughtful comments and responses to members here could hardly be viewed as uncultured and oafish. I am forever after another member here for her self deprecating  remarks and now you? Is there something in the water?

You're a sweetheart, but I really am. I was in the military for several years, and "owned" a sidearm myself. Although it was barely ever even worn being a Naval gal, aside from ceremonially. After I got out, I kinda settled down in an area where... let's just say the folks from Deliverance would be several orders of magnitude higher on the awareness scale. I'm fascinated by how you folks in the US do things. And why. Gun ownership here is a very different thing. There was one person I knew who used an air rifle to go hunting rabbits and squirrels and such in the local woodland. He was subject to whispered ridicule for being "creepy". Yes, lol, it is that bad. Although I suppose the Swastika flags and such he had emblazoning his house went some way towards that image.

I don't know, it's just really different where I live. If you own a gun, people automatically think you're going to use it for nefarious practices. Like that was the whole point of getting it or something. It's probably not like that in other parts of the UK. Just in my backwater burg, lol. Nevertheless, I find it fascinating to learn what the appeal is.

I belonged to a shooting sports club until last year and enjoyed shooting holes in paper targets and found that practice made me pretty proficient. Improving my scores was to me much akin to what some people get out of golfing, you're no longer focusing on the stress at work or any other problems, but focused 100% on improving one's own self control with regards to trigger pull by steady squeeze avoiding the propensity to flinch, target acquisition in timed events, and a certain camaraderie with other competitors followed by a trip to Starbucks and a little BS session. Beats going to church on Sunday.

Haha, for some reason that really made me laugh.

I've fired a rifle and a shotgun, some thirty years ago! Visiting some cousins on a farm, one suggested he and I go out and shoot some cans. I was a pretty good aim for a first timer, I know it's pretty easy to hit a target with a shot gun but I still got most shots with the rifle too. Take that, cans!

I threw hand grenades  and used 45's and M-16's does that count. I'm not really into weapons though, even though it would be nice to have the advantage over someone trying to break into your house.

Seeing as I spent the day cleaning my friends guns so his wife and I can go shooting tomorrow.  It should be fun, nothing like taking some high end tactical weaponry for a girls day out.  I showed her how to brake down the Ar15, G3, the pile of pistols and gave her a introductory course in Close Quarters Combat.  Tomorrow is range day and basic boat CQB.  She is extremley excited about it, and well so am I.  I have missed teaching firearms.  They have some legally owned silenced weapons I can not wait to try as well!!!

Next time I come to New Orleans we will be doing shotgun for the whole group.  Now that is my bread and butter.

Oh darn. I guess I was mistaken. I was so looking forward to a thread full of MtF weightlifters, showing off their proud biceps.  :D

Androgynous_Machine

.40 Glock 24 (Favorite out of the bunch, ton of fun to shoot)
.9mm Glock 17 with 17-round extended magazine (Purse pistol)
Remmington 700 tactical bolt-action rifle with a 26" barrel
12-guage Mossberg Break-Action HS12 tactical shotgun (For putting dicks in dirt at the home)

I just got the rifle and so far not much complaint with it.  Solid rifle.

I've been watching that gal with the sword on "Walking Dead", she's my favorite character so far because she's so fit, mentally alert, focused and intuitive, all the traits the whiner ex sheriff is totally lacking and she's a total badass head whacker with that sword. Diana if you can handle your sword like that then you're on my team sweetie!  :)

To be or not to be....that is the question
