Social Security before DMV, at least that's how I had to do it in Massachusetts. SS needed Michael's ID to change Michael's records to Devlyn. First question they asked me at the registry was "Have you been to SS yet?" which I had. Congratulations!
Thanks! Yup, the first appointment will be with the Social Security folks. I'll be carrying my copy of the
Program Operations Manual System RM 10212.200 Changing Numident Data for Reasons other than Name Change TN 5(06-13) so the person I get will have instructions handy on how, when, and why they must update the
sex field on the Numident. (A sex field? Is that how they do it on Star Trek? "Nurse Chapel! Activate the sex field!")
Next appointment is with the California DMV, where I simply provide the court order, the DL-329 as completed by the doctor to revise the gender marker, the DL-45 for the name change, along with lunch and a snack while queuing.
Meanwhile the Priority Mail envelope for Vital Records will be winging its way along with another certified copy of the court order, an original birth certificate copy, the form to 'correct' the birth certificate, and another doctor's letter.
Once I have the new birth certificate and new drivers license, neither of which hint at my old name or gender (Yay California!) Michelle applies for her very first shiny new passport, with no hints of her past in the paperwork because all the submitted documents have a consistent gender and name. Nope, no doctor's letter needed! (Double-checked with the Oakland Transgender Law Center.)
Wheee! I'm going to be busy, and probably a little giddy when not bureaucratically outraged.
