1969? I didn't think they had computers then. I thought computers started in like the 90s. What could computers do in 1969? I know there was no internet in 1969. Right?

My first job was in the computer room at Yamaha in 1969. In 1982 I logged into my first IBM PC with twin floppy disk with 64k memory. We landed a man on the moon with this technology. 1996 got my first cell phone. Since 1984 I have installed at least 10 major computer systems. ....Do I lament not having GPS. No, I seldom if ever have been lost and we had "Maps"

We also remembered everyone's address, phone number, and Birthday! 

Ask me my son's phone number now! I don't know it. But it's in my iPhone lol

I'm a little younger (I'll be 60 in November). My first computer was a Timex/Sinclair! I still have it. 

I've run almost every version of Windoze since 3.1, Mac OS since 7.5, Linux, Irix, Solaris, BeOS ...

I often try to remember life before the Internet. What did I do? Probably spent more time playing and writing music! The WWW is the ultimate time waster.

Wow 1987 for me. A IBM knock off with dual floppy and 256k of ram... had the famous bread box prior (C64). 1991 for my first cell phone. 12 lbs and the size of 4 bricks...

Still installing computer systems today and enjoy having all the tech around me.

In 1972 my Dodge Demon had a 340 with 4 barrel carb and was orange. I saw Micky Mantle and Roger Maris, Hank Aaron, Sandy Kofax, Don Drysdale, Nolan Ryan, Bob Gibson, Carl Yastremski, Harmon Kilibrew. I saw Roman Gabriel, Kenny Stabler, the Fearsome Foursome and the Purple People eaters. Do I lament not having GPS. No, I seldom if ever have been lost and we had "Maps"

A computer with less resources than a 386 computer circa 1988 put a man on the moon. Computers in 1969 took up whole rooms with consoles and tape machines. It wasn't too much earlier that computers were used to analyze handwriting at shopping malls. Cobol and Pasqual were the dominant languages. Profs was the first email processor. all via mainframes.
Mainframes used Ebcdic not Ascii. Mainframes used flat files not relational databases. CIS was used to create input screens and tables and was fairly easy at least for what I used them for. The big problem at the time was storage. At the time one gig of storage ran into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Today you can mount a terabyte disk for about $60. If I had a terabyte at the time I could have revolutionized programming for remanufactured components. Imagine all this and you have more power in your laptop.

Ha! Computers existed, even in homes, before the internet. After all the internet and World Wide Web was invented on computers.

Here's a Macintosh 512k (and a bunch of others) from 1984, and a Mac Portable "laptop" from 1989, from my personal collection

I remember going on the Internet at work using an SGI workstation and a T1 line back in the early 90s. That's when services like AOL was getting started. And that was NOT the Internet. [emoji3]

They look weird little tvs.  The bottom one looks like a laptop on steroids.  People had computers in their homes before there was internet? Why? What could anyone possibly do with a computer if there was no internet? Why would anyone even want one? A computer without internet is like totally useless.

The original Macs were all one piece. So the monitor was built into the computer. Same as the current iMacs.

Are computers only used for the internet? Of course not. Even now I do lots of other stuff on my computer besides the internet. Such as?

I create artwork and edit photos and other images. I write and record music, using the computer as a digital "tape" recorder. I write in a word processor. When was the last time you saw someone using an actual typewriter? I don't think they make them anymore! I even edit video.

Before the internet and email, you wrote letters by hand and mailed them with a stamp. For more formal matters you might type the letter up on your computer and print it out!

And business type people use spreadsheets and other tools.

One day I booted up one of the old Macs. The Portable has Adobe Photoshop 1.0! Only does Black and white. It also has MS Word 1.0 and some other old software. I realized how much time we spend on the internet now. So back then if I wasn't actually using the computer to do something, I might have just been messing around on a computer! That was fun because they were still fairly new. But then I'd shut it off and go outside with real people. Lol.
