Hey everyone! I thought I'd like to show you all this amasing character in an anime called One Piece, he is called Emperio Ivankov the Miracle Man, he has the power to create hormones and inject them into people :D This may seem like nothing special because we do that with syringes, however, he does this using his fingers! He is an engineer of the human body, he can inject girl/boy hormones into a male/female to visably transform them in a few seconds; he can also inject adrenaline to keep people fighting and stimulate a persons immune system to fight deadly illnesses.

Here's a clip of him in action, transforming a male into a female! (happens at 0:50)

!!! Contains swear words !!![/center]

A little extra information and background:
The people he is with are called "Newkama" they're people who have been transformed already to their prefered gender, and they all live together in a secret community (within this giant prison of the entire world) who regect the notion of binary gender conformities :) Emperio Ivankov himself is a revolutionary who works with a few other revolutionaries against the world government, he has been hiding in his layer for a number of years waiting for the right time to move and in the course of this anime, Luffy's (the main character) arrival sparks this uprising..

I've been searching for a long time for animes with transgenders in them, but I just keep finding hentai and pornno sites its kind of annoying.. Does anybody here have any recommendations?

Hourou Musuko ((放浪息子) my favorite Manga is has a transgender boy, a transgender girl, and a MTF transsexual all as important characters. The Manga recently got licensed so it will be coming to America, later this year. I can really identify with the main character.

In December the anime of it will be coming out in Japan, I wouldn't hold my breath on it coming out with an English dub, but personally I prefer subtitles anyway.

Takako Shimura the woman who writes it also does a Yuri manga called Aoi Hana (Sweet Blue Flowers in the US) that got it's own anime as well.

OMG lets hope that it STAYS undubbed :) I'd like to watch it with glorious japanese audio <3 But who is going to fansub it? I'd like to watch this anime, is the story about romance? or is it an action/adventure? jounin? seinin?

What did you think Emperio Ivankov?

Personally I don't agree with the fetishising and commoditisation of transgender characters in anime/manga. Then again, anime and manga push a lot of fetishisation - especially of Japanese women.
Which isn't good.

I'm not interested in fetish/porno or anything that objectifies us transgenders.. I'm simply interested in an anime or manga that has a transexual or two in it.. :( It sure is a real shame that simply the mere mention of the word automatically implies "->-bleeped-<-" and pornography.. :( I don't like being objectified..

Hahaha I was watching the YT clip and my SO is like: 'Jesus, you're watching Hentai this early in the morning?'...

Anywho, I've never really looked for tg themes in manga/anime. Revolutionary Girl Utena will always be one of my favourites though, and it does have some interesting gender bending aspects.

I firmly believe that Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club is genderqueer. Her dad is a crossdresser. Ouran High School Host Club in general is awesome.  ;D

Just a clip of Haruhi's dad there. The whole series is available on YouTube, dub and sub. Not that I'm shamelessly bigging it up or anything.

I thought Kashi Mashi was kinda cute.  And I'm sure you've probably already heard of Ranma 1/2.  Umm...other than that...I can't think of anything else at the moment that relates to transgender in anime.

Well, I don't know who will fansub it, I think that yuurisan subs did Aoi Hana which was also by Takako Shimura.

The story in Hourou Musuko is more of a slice-of-life story than anything. It takes place in modern times, no one has powers, or anything like that, they are all just normal people living their lives. There is a bit of romance from time to time, but that isn't really the focus of the plot.

The plot is mostly about Shuu a boy who wants to be a girl, the supporting characters are also very important, and you get to see how everyone's parents and teachers are. It is very comprehensive in it's coverage of Shuu's life.

To the people who are worried about the perception of transgender people in Japanese media, no one in this story is more promiscuous than people are in real life, neither transgender, transsexual, nor homosexual people are used or depicted as sex objects.

This is the only manga that I have read where trans characters are not just a plot device to be used for cheap laughs. In fact there is very little funny or sexy happening in it, making it a radical departure from most other works involving gender in japan.

Kotonoha scanlated the first 34 chapters, and houroumusume did 35-84 (it is still ongoing, I can't wait for chapter 85!). Since it will come out here soon, the scanlation groups may remove the downloads sometime soon.

To answer the last question, I thought it was an interesting scene, even though I have never really been a fan of One Piece, I might check it out again.

Well, it's not made into an anime yet, but has anyone heard of the manga After School Nightmare? Here's the story from Wikipedia:

Mashiro Ichijo is a girls' idol, handsome and kind, but he has been hiding a secret all his life: he's not truly male, nor entirely female. He has the upper body of a male but the lower body of a female. When a mysterious school nurse introduces him to a new class, he finds that in order to graduate he has to go to a world of dreams to find a mysterious key, competing with other classmates to find it. As he struggles with his gender identity, he tries to decide whether he wants to live as a male and go out with one of the prettiest girls in school or as a female and be with the cute male slacker, both of which are madly in love with Ichijo.

I'm so addicted to this series. Except I'm a bit concerned of where the story is going. It seems like the main character is pretty weak-willed, and it seems like his view of himself is being clouded by how his peers expect him to act...which isn't really a good message. Hopefully that changes. I haven't read the whole series yet.

I actually like that anime.  I thought it was really done well. I am happy how the ending turned out.  :)

Not essentially anime, but one of the non-player characters in Final Fight called Poison is often very gingerly referred to being as transgender. In a nutshell, there was a group of people that classed as any sort of violence towards women as wrong when the original arcade release came out in the US so the developers turned around in a half arsed manner and said well that particular character is a guy then...

Pretty sure there is also a transgender character in the game Guilty Gear but don't quote me on that.

I do believe you're talking about Bridget. Actually, from what I understand, he never wanted to be a girl, but his family raised him as one. He doesn't actually identify as transgendered...But I've never actually played the game, so I don't know for sure. This is just what I've heard from friends.

Ah contemporary manga :3 I like contemporary anime/manga such as Genshiken, I liked Genshiken it was so addictive for some reason - most likely because it mostly showed me japanese culture and I that always fascinates me ;D

I hope it has a happy ending.

Aw what the hell?! This is really annoying because out of ALL of the Emperio Ivankov video clips there are on youtube, Toei Animation decides to DMCA the ONLY clip of him gender transforming someone..

Sorry to completely deviate from the topic, but Toei reminded me of Sailor Moon.
The Sailor Stars are male as  their secret identity but because in their past life they were female, they transform into women :P

This is one of my all time favorite manga. It's cute, but deep and, unlike in other things I've read, it feels real. It's not a guy who gets magically turned into a girl, or a quirky comedy about transgenders that's corny and obviously drawn/written by someone who doesn't understand what it's like to be transgender. Such a great series. T_T I just wish it was updated more...

Unfortunately I've yet to see an anime or manga that doesn't objectify or sexualise transgender people in some way.
Hourou Musuko -flails arms- It's good.

@Little Dragon
Onemanga classifies it as seinen.
