Good for you  :)

I started on Monday and have been going everyday. I had a rough time the first time as I used to smoke cigarettes and was flat out out of shape. I do about two miles a day and alternate between walking and running. There's a huge wall of sandstone at the end of my run that I call "The Burn." I'll run up that hill after I'm done doing my sandy/rocky/watery canyon run. It's been getting easier as the days go by so by the time summers over I should be able to run that whole course without getting tired.

I started bringing my 10-year old niece along but she's gotten lazy. I'll keep encouraging her as much as I can. I wanted to compete in a 5k run at the end of the summer or a 10K if I somehow develop the stamina and fortitude to compete in an actual race.

I encourage you to keep running. It is physically rewarding (except the first couple of times when you push yourself...hack hack wheeze wheeze) and does me some good to meet the small goals I set for myself :)

I applaud you both for starting! That's the hardest part, but you'll find it to be super fulfilling!

Aisha hope you're still going! Keep it up girl! I've managed to increase my distance to about 3 miles a day now. Almost everyday but some days I get too busy though!

Yay running! Keep it up!! Like Erica said, it's a great way to get/stay in shape!

Gradually increasing the distance will work for everybody. To decrease excessive weight, at least 40-min running is required. And regular light running seems better than infrequent intense running. I sometimes run 30 km or 15 miles, but usually 10 km or 6 miles.

I keep meaning to start running, but I need to get some motivation! Come back motivation, I need you!

I bike at the moment but intend to start running cos it burns more calories. Trying to eat less too so I burn a little muscle too since I carry more than I like on arms and shoudlers. (very hard since i have a weakness for food sometimes!) The thing I hate about running is that it seems so slow!
I currently go down the river and back for about 4 miles but at least the scenery is better there than in the streets. The enviroment your in really makes a difference to your motivation imo.

I love running, it's the best exercise ever imho :] It's fun to run at night or take a pet :) It's like.. it will help you lose weight, stay in shape, or get really fit and it works quite a few places on your body not just your legs

Sometimes I overthink it and don't want to run but honestly the best thing to do is not to think about wanting to excercise, "Just do it!" as Nike says hehe

Gotta second ya here! Some days, I drive home from work thinking, "maybe I'll just relax and won't run tonight..." but then every time I look at what I'm eating, I get changed and hit the road! My new house is directly across from a Greenway trail system. Love it!

Congrats on the running and starting!

I can't run--it's very painful on my legs and lower back, so I settle for bike riding (fast and hard) and swimming.

Thanks. :)  I would love to do cycle spin class at a gym for some cross training. I used to do that and enjoyed it alot, it's great cardio and working out the legs. I think the seat may cause me an injury though, so that will have to wait. I know it would be very uncomfortable right now, and the pressure to the surgery area would be too much.

Thats a great combination your doing. Do you have any problems with traffic? It's way to scary where I live to cycle on the road. I do admire those out on the road biking, they are hardcore.

I have to use the cycles in the gym right now because my area is pretty dangerous for trying to ride a bike anywhere--the traffic is horrendous and people have no idea what to do with a bicycler.  Before I moved to this are, though, I had no trouble with the people because I lived on a pretty much empty street that was two miles long one way so I was pretty safe there.  I like bikes because they're great on the knees, and because they hit a decent range of the body.  But I like swimming more, which works the whole body.

I know I'm pushing it and don't think it is Dr. recommended. It's tough to sit around during recovery and healing when your used to being active and an avid distance runner. I notified my Dr.'s office and am awaiting their verdict on running. I think they're going to tell me to stop.

One of my colleauge tore his Archilles' tendon while running an 'ultra' marathon for 3 days. He got surgery and restarted slowly running in 6 months. He said running actually helped recover from his surgery. Then he successfully finnished a cross-country marathon (about 600 km, or 400 miles).

In my case, I always run very slowly. Some people try to pass me while I run, and a few of them even try to make fun of my slow running. Usualy I do no care, but sometimes I show them how fast I can run. But I regret next day as I feel some pains in my legs. Fast running always tend to cause some pains in my body. I have exercised by running during the the past 8 years, and I think it is lucky that I have not got any injury, as I know many people who had to stop running because of injury. For long-term exercise, you need to slow down the average speed of running.

I concluded that running 10 km per day for a week is far better than running 70 km for a single day. Regular running (nearly everyday) is far more effective in maintaining my health and also decreasing my girth.

I don't like running much because I cant really run with my binder on because I cant breathe, and I cant run in a sports bra because my chest would bounce and I think it would set me off and make me very emotional or angry

justmeinoz

I have a dodgy back and knee so I would rather walk or cycle. As long as it is regular and done at a reasonably brisk pace it keeps my weight steady, and my fitness up.
We used to do "power walking" in Police training, we just called it marching!

Wow!! That's awesome, Valarie!! I was wondering when you were going to get back to running. Please keep us posted on your progress!! Post-op exercise/return to normal levels of activity is a real concern of mine.

Glad to hear you're doing so well! I hope your Dr approves! :D

I've been wanting to start running barefoot-style ever since I read some articles about it.  I finally stopped saying I would do it and bought a pair of those Vibram FiveFinger shoes last week.  So now I'm starting off slowly to build the necessary leg muscles to run this way.  It's fun so far, but my calves are killing me :)
