I'm a huge Dr Who fan but the background knowledge on this thread is astounding.

I've only read 2 pages so far so sorry if offend any fans of the new doctor with this statement, I hate this new Doctor. There you go I said it & I feel better for it.
I just don't like his way of portraying the Doctor just like I didn't like Sylvester McCoy's Doctor.

When they had the build up to the Doctor dying & I had a list of actors that i'd love to see fill Matts boots. Then they used a get out of jail card & i'm stuck watching more of him.

I think the stories are very good & the writing's superb, there's hardly an episode that goes by without at the very least bringing a lump to my throat or a tear to my eye.
Rory & Amy's exit episode had tears running down my cheeks at least 3 times (I try to never give major story spoilers in case someone is still catching up).

The writers even manage to get me welling up with simple little scenes, one that springs to mind - TINY SPOILER ALERT - Rory's dad asks the Doctor for 1 small favour, in the next shot you see him sitting at the TARDIS door dangling his feet into space as he gazes down at the Earth, as he gazes down he munches on a sandwich & sips on a brew from his thermos flask.
There's something very touching about the simplicity of his request & a certain charm about having his picnic with him.

I'd like to end this ramble by mentioning something that has no doubt been mentioned, part of the Christmas episode this year was filmed in Bristol, I mentioned it because YAY, i'm from Bristol!!
I wasn't doing anything that day but didn't go down to try & catch a glimpse, if it was any past Doctor then i'd have been there in a flash hoping for an autograph or even just a quick smile from the lovely Mr Tennant

As we have so so many Doctor Who fans I was hoping someone could answer a question that's bothering me.

At the start of the film that killed Sylvesters Doctor (Yay, I liked that...sorry) didn't the voice over say about a timelord only having a certain number of regenerations?

If this is right does anyone know how many Doctors we have left before the writers have to kill the Doctor for all time or come up with a clever story twist to give him more regenerations?

I think its like two regenerations left after the current one. But then they could change things since it is fiction and still a very popular show.

I've no doubt they'll keep the Doctor alive somehow, I don't envy the scriptwriters who have to think up a story epic enough for the Doctor to break that rule!

I was happy to see in one of the recent episodes that the Doctor is very supportive of the trans community, a big thank you to the scriptwriter who put that in. It made me smile.

As River Song says, the Doctor lies.  The thread was always that timelords had 12 regenerations.  The Master had used all his up but at the end of The Keeper of Traken he stole the body of Nyssa'a father.  Then in the TV movie, after supposedly being vapourised by the Daleks, the master's jelly like essence stole the body of an ambulance driver.  From this we know that the 12 regenerations are not the end of a timelord, just the end of their corporeal form.

At the end of the last regeneration, the essence of timelords used to be transferred into the Matrix on Gallifrey.  They then existed in a virtual world (see The Deadly Assassin and Parts 11 and 12 of Trial of a Timelord).  John Simm's Master states in The Sound of Drums that he was ressurected by the Timelords during the time war but he ran away.  After he was cremated by the Doctor Simm's master was again ressurected using chemicals.

The 12 regenerations appears to be an arbitary limit set by the timelords to stop them 'living too long'. 

In Let's Kill Hitler, River uses her remaining regeneration energy to save the Doctor.  Under the old rules, this would have added 10 regenerations to the doctor's life (River had regenerated twice).

In the Sara Jane Adventure, Death of the Doctor, Clyde is told by the Doctor that he can regenerate over 500 times.

The classic series ran for 24 years and got through seven Doctors in that time.  I suppose the 12 regenerations (invented during Tom Baker's reign seemed to be enough.

Interestingly, the change from William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton was described on air as a rejuvination, so it could have been a different thing all together.

I've watched most of the Doctor Who's that have been televised in my time period but I wasn't born until 75, also because i've spent my life cramming my noggin with sci-fi i've forgotten more than I remember.

There is also the Dr's daughter. We have no idea where she has gone, other than off to explore the Universe.  I guess they can always spin her off into another series like they did with Torchwood, if she doesn't inherit his position.

I started watching the show online a few years back, starting with Eccleston. Instantly hooked. Hated Tennant when he showed up, then I loved him. Hated Smith when he showed up, then I loved him too.

I am planning to watch the older stuff, just haven't gotten around to it  just yet.

Everyone wants me to love Matt Smith. I've tried, but I just can't get past him seeming like an overgrown schoolboy. My wish upon a star is for the next doctor to be Benedict Cumberbatch. Damn, he'd be good. Never going to happen, I know, but a girl can dream...

He's already turned the part down once though. Rumour has it that he was first choice before Matt Smith. Rumour also has it that he will be The Master to Smith's Doctor.

I would like to see a slightly older Doctor.  Christopher Ecclestone was about right but now we have two young incarnations in succession.   If Simon Russell-Beale's not doing Shakespear he'd be good!

Personally I wasn't sure about Matt Smith but he has grown on me part because he kind of reminds me of Patrick Troughten's doctor(apparently that was Matt's plan), Tennant I like but he seems too emotional perhaps too human at times understandable since well for those that may still not know..he is quite alone(a feeling I share at times) Where as Matt comes off alien again.

That said what do I know afterall Colin Baker is becoming one of my favorite doctor's based on the three stories of his I have on dvd.

I have about 50 classic who stories on dvd and none of the new stuff but that is because I want to get as many of the classics as I can before I buy the new stuff and also cause I feel the new stuff's dvds are a tad overpriced.

I'm hoping this years christmas special will be better than the last two, there's just something drearily boring about restricting yourself to the same time period year after year, why not have an epic space battle story for a change with a sudden truce in the middle of it to echo the one held during world war one?  I think Moffat needs more cards in his deck as he's playing the same ones far too regularly
