When was the last time you had French fries?

The week before last, we had lunch at A&W: a Beyond burger and sweet potato fries. 

Last Friday.  First time in three years.  I fell of the cart in a hard way.  Red Robin simple cheese burger and two servings of plank fries.  I feel so guilty.

This topic feels familiar to me for some reason.  ;D

I had some fries last night. Not chips.  :)

Been making them in the air fryer lately... really great. All the benefits of a potato (of which there are many) without all the calories from the oil.

But that being said, if you want regular fries... eat regular fries. Don't feel guilty. Just don't make them an every day thing.

Last Monday, if you count steak fries.

I had some crinkle cut fries with two pieces of chicken at lunch today.

Oh yes, with ketchup!  No fry sauce though, I never used that.  I suppose I will someday!  I have had fries though with BBQ sauce and with honey mustard sauce.

Last night! Dipped in cheese and sour cream. Yum.

I just used ketchup.

I like baked potatoes fully loaded: cheese, butter, sour cream, chives, and bacon bits. So I started putting shredded cheese on my fries and topping them off with a dollop of sour cream. Sometimes ketchup, but more often just mayo. I got hooked on that while living in Germany.

I had an 8 inch Philly Cheese Steak and an order of fries for lunch today at Doogies.

Friday, yesterday, with a cheeseburger.

A couple of weekends ago.  They were home made, and very good.  I was able to maintain my self control, mostly :-).  I just eat them with salt.  I don't mind ketchup or some of the other sides I have been reading about in this topic, but I just like that the taste of the french fried potato enhanced with salt best.  I also feel I will have the least guilt with this choice.

Had some fries Saturday, cooked in the air fryer.

I am eating some now!  ;D

Pretty much only when I'm out with mom.  I take her out once a week to the park or some place similar.  We generally have dinner before I take her home.  I'm not much for restaurant food and she's a very lite eater so we usually split a burger or some such item.  Mom always wants fries with it, so we have fries.  Most of the time it works out well with a single order of fries. I make sure she has enough and I eat the rest. 

Often I think they see me taking care of my mom and I think they give us extra fries when they split the meal.  Then I end up eating too many fries.  I have the will power not to order them, but when they are sitting in front if me, I can't help eating them. :(

Thursday, fish cake and chips for lunch. Had enough chips left over to put in the air fryer and eat with my dinner . Nice and crispy!!

Why yes.  But Danielle informed me of fry sauce.  It think it must be an Ohio or other Midwest restaurant thing.  But it may have been more widespread than that.

I have lived in the Midwest since 1990 and haven't heard of it.
Maybe an Ohio thing. We don't consider Ohio part of the Midwest.

We called it Russian Dressing in CA and CO, or Secret Sauce if it has garlic and spices in it. Same stuff McDonald's puts on their Big Mac, but they add pickle relish, which makes it more like Thousand Island dressing.

I never heard of maple syrup on waffle fries but on waffles.

I am waffling on whether or not to try it though on the waffle fries.

But it has to be good maple syrup, the real stuff.  No high fructose corn syrup fake maple syrup.

I used to get mine from a small roadside vendor in Illinois. It came from Vermont, sucked out of the tree by a little old man with no teeth, and cooked over a wood fire in copper kettles. The best stuff I ever tasted, but it was expensive. $20 for a small bottle.

Do roast potatoes cooked in pork fat in the air fryer count, they were small chunks so like fat chips!!

Dear Lori:
Waffle Fries are not made with pancake or waffle batter....  they are cut potatoes that are formed into a waffle shape and deep fried just like French Fries...    they are essentially french fries, with the texture and taste of french fries.
Many times they will be served with Fish and Chips at some restaurants that I have eaten at.

The first French fry was NOT made in France.

They were made in Greece grease. 

Perhaps Crisco brand? 

I had some fries this evening.

I can't remember the last time. I don't go for fast food other than Subway. I'm picky want I eat.
I do eat potatoes. I cut up a serving and add like onions or mushrooms with it and put some olive oil and seasoning on that and put it in the oven at 500 for 15-20 minutes.I put some meat with it too. Cutting up Bell pepper and laying on top is good too.

That sounds really yummy!

I use Potatoes O'Brien, which consists of cubed potatoes, onions, and sweet peppers. I cook it in a skillet. While it is cooking, I whisk three eggs and add them just when the potatoes are almost done. Adding some cubed ham would be good too. Then, I continue cooking like scrambled eggs until the eggs are no longer wet or sticky.

Dump it on a plate and sprinkle with some Mexican-style 4-cheese shredded cheese. Then top it off with chunky salsa, and/or sour cream. I call it Potatoes O'Lori. I make it a couple of times a month. It is so good.  :)

Tonight, went to call in the chip shop but nowhere to park so made some in the air fryer.

Last week.  In a restaurant in Boston's South end.  Had the skins on them too!  I pick those out as the most tasty.

Tuesday evening.

Last evening I had some fries with my BBQ ribs.

It was a good combination.  It ranks high as a combination, up there with fish and chips.

Just part cooked some in the air fryer ready for dinner to go with some burgers.

Prior to reheating with an air fryer, fries just did not remain tasty after they became cold.

I had some shoestring fries today, a big order, and that was all for lunch, besides my last  Snickerdoodle cookie.

I had one French fry today while at lunch.  Yes, just one.  I did not buy just one, I just had one from a friend's plate.  It was not very good. 

Are French fries getting to be pricey at the restaurants you visit?

I'm a bad girl.  Twice this week.  Saturday night.

Most food historians think the French fries are a Belgian invention.

One theory of the origins of French fries is that these were created by poor people in the 1680s.  They cooked potatoes instead of fish.

Another theory why they are called French fries is the American solders during WW I enjoyed them a lot. They were in the French speaking portion of Belgium.

Often fries are made with potatoes that are oval.  These potatoes can produce longer fries.
Russet potatoes are often used to produce fries.

I wonder if they taste much different if cooked in beef tallow vs. some seed type oil.

I honestly can't stand fries. French or otherwise. It must be the Brit in me. Double cooked chips, cooked in beef dripping, over fries any day. I tried one once when one of my friends got some from McDonalds. Couldn't even eat the whole thing.

McDonald's used to have the best fries. Just the smell of them made me hungry. Then they switched their cooking oil and they have never been the same. They upset my stomach so I just quit going to McD's.
