I am getting ready to go to work now...well I'm doing my pre-out-of-bed coffee/internet/procrastinating routine. I really need to get going crap!

Right now I work at a University bookstore, so I put retail, but I am also in nursing school now so soon I can put medical!!

I do think you should put food service on there, that is a big one! Emo my last job I worked in a sandwich shop so I get it. At least we didn't have a fryer or grill which makes cleaning stuff nice and easy.

I get out and about a lot more now.  Social work, feminist activism, all sorts of things.  It's a lot more fun than working on a computer firewall, and probably more real benefit too.

Yeah, I bet lots of people retire and find themselves more involved in things they care about simply due to the increase in free-time. I will say activism and such is much more important; now you tear down walls instead of making them impenetrable (social wall vs firewall...you get what I mean.  ;))  Glad you're finally doing what you love though!

Some people love it, I get to sing my heart out (and I am a TERRIBLE singer) to the radio, and practice my voice as much as I want being alone all the time. The problem is I am not the sort of person who likes to be alone all the time, and I really have a bit of a passion for technology so I feel like I am wasting my time doing this. At least I deal only with finished product, not the trucks that actually haul the pigs (they smell soooo bad), not sure if I could work on that end of the production chain.

I'm a self employed programmer. Although I'd like to learn the design side of software and web design. I dabble but its something I've never really committed to.

I hate the idea of working for someone else, its just...unnatural to me. I like to be in control of my own destiny, and feel I can only do that if I get my way....sounds a bit selfish but I think in some situations you have to be.

Retired early from being a guitar technician/luthier/guitar dealer.

Now I'm a happy housewife.

My wife is a partner at a big LA law firm, so whatever money I made was "in the noise" anyway, especially after taxes.  Why work a job that pisses you off more often than not if you don't have to?

I may end up buying an existing business or two in the coming years.

Worked retail over the summer in the many souvenir and clothing stores my family owns in the Mackinac Straits area. Hated life for 3 months. The pay wasn't really worth it, due to the working conditions, lack of technological assistance (no barcodes, no computerized inventory, nada,) and the rude customers. Some were OK, but I accidentally insulted one evidently and she was so angry, I tried to apologise, but just stormed out of the store, demanding a refund (which we weren't allowed to do.)

What I'd really like to work in? Architecture, but my school doesn't offer that. Or maybe I could be a critic for Skytrax. But I'm going with psychology. A brain doctor, so I don't have to deal with the blood and guts that the rest of the medical profession does.

I worked a three year stint in our D.O.C. system. If you have their respect now it will only get better because of the fortitude it takes to transition. Remember, they greatly value bravery and courage. You should be OK. If their are new knuckle heads who try to bother you the unit heavies will take care of that for you as long as you have treated them with respect and dignity in the past, which I bet you have. :)

To be honest, I truly had no idea how inmates would act. I think your right! Most of them completely operate on the respect, courage, and self struggle mentality.  I've always did my best to keep my word on helping them and only layed down the law to the butt-head critters. Its relieving to finally get someone's experience on transitioning in the DOC.   :police: Because there is next to nothing that I have found.

Improv Actor.

Acting was the most fun.  Teaching was the most rewarding.

Looking for a career change though.  I really don't want to be fixing computers for people anymore.  Not sure where I'm heading next.

(I have also worked as an Actuarial Technician, an Archaeologist, a Numismatist, a Pizza-Deliverer, a Mall Cop, a Bookstore Co-Owner, a Video Editor & a Ladies Shoe Salesman.  Life has been interesting  :D )

Programmers, Designers, Developers, Freelancers, etc. Surely there's some sort of reason for that?

I started in mainframe ops which evolved into systems analyst, so i t based as well

I am after finishing my pharmacy and biochemistry degree, but I have worked with pharmacovigilance.

My routine could be resumed as picking up the phone and collecting reports of adverse reactions from patients in use of some meds...

And one thing I have noticed lol mostly girls work on this kind of department...it doesnt' seem a very male thing to do, answer the phone and be kind with people in need of assistance lol

I always thought driving a big truck would be kinda fun. At least its just you out there! Honestly too, thank you for the bacon;I loooove it!  :icon_boogy:

Believe me , it is nothing fun about it , the fun part is independent of the job itself : being alone /travelling /seeing the world can be accomplished without working this.
I worked as a truck driver for a long time now and I just realized how stupid I was choosing that
At least in Europe it is one of the most risky , underpaid in relation with the amount of work , dirty , family ruining jobs

It only made me more of a loner , I feel uncomfortable when I am between people (maybe because I still look and dress like a man ) , not to mention it develops a lot of masculine features and traits .
Luckily , I will be out of this soon .

So truck driver as my job , but not for long , I hope I will either get a job in the standard female jobs area  or I will do something on my own and trying to get some money out of it .

I hear you, it isn't really any better in the United States. I have been doing it only for a few years, just because it was very easy to get into. I am attempting to get into the IT field, hopefully this will be the last year I ever have to shift gears in a vehicle lol, I swear my left leg has is more muscular than my right just because I push the clutch so much in my truck with it's 10 speed transmission.

Still choose medical. I do work in I.T. but I do so at hospital and I am in fact an x-ray tech.

Working in cube land these days I kind of wish that I had stayed in x-ray land. At least there I could hide somewhat while going through the awkward stages of transition.

Let's just say the unbiquitous IT polo shirts aren't cutting hiding the boobs so much anymore. At least in hospital scrubs they are so ill fitting that I could hide a whole extra body in there and no one would notice...

IT may not be the best field to go for, unless you really love computers.  A friend of mine with A+, Net+ & Apple Essentials 10.6 certifications was turned down a few days ago for a $16k p.a. position because the employer found someone better qualified.  This was for a Help-Desk Support Centre job.

You know what is interesting , that I don't even like driving  :D Or I could enjoy some driving but not with the real life traffic and responsibility . Now I got somehow more comfortable , but anyway , off-work I drove a car only once since driving school . Before accepting myself , I felt it was a defect that I am scared to drive . Now I feel great about that , makes me feel more feminine , and also it feels that I allow the real me to emerge by not forcing myself into doing things I instinctively tend to reject. One more week and I am free from driving . My legs are safe , for the last 7 months I drove an 'automatic'  ;)

I do, specifically I love Linux and I love Pascal. Now I doubt I could get a job doing anything with Pascal (does anyone use Delphi these days? I use Lazarus/FreePascal) but there are a bunch of datacenters near me, and they all run linux. I would get my foot in the door anyway I can, but the Linux and networking certs are what I am most interested in. I would much rather get a job where they use Debian (why is RHEL/Fedora so popular?) but, I would take a job doing basically anything that can get me home everyday, especially if they give transportation vouchers for the Metro/VRE/MARC trains (many jobs here do).

You'd probably struggle with finding work for Pascal to be honest. Most places are using PHP, Python and Ruby these days. A better option is to maybe look at jobs you'd like and see what the requirements are, then learn those skills :)

One thing that is worth learning - Objective-C. Make iOS apps with it, you make a ton of cash :)

Just another driver here and part time musician. Yeah and you other folks are right it gets old and boring really fast. The best thing for me about it was that I owned and still own the truck but once you cross the US at least 10 times there is nothing left to see that's new another plus side is that I am alone unless I am loading, unloading and getting fuel. Dangerous, underpaid, underappreciated, overworked and overstressed sums up driving a truck in the US especially east of the Mississippi River.

I agree with this... When did it become so hard to find a simple summer or part time job.. I've got two bachelor degrees and have been denied a plethora of jobs over the past year and a half that I was certainly qualified for... only to walk into those establishments later and find people who are clearly under qualified for the position working there... Its absurd.  (that or they want to pay me 7.25 an hour.... I'm certainly not above it if I need it to live, but come on guys.. Really?!)

I'm sorry but I really cant add any reason but I totally agree with you that it is too common to simply be coincidental. I belong to a trans* support group in RL and there is a large number of IT professionals in the group as well.  I would love to hear theories on why there is such a large number of IT professionals that apparently are trans *.

One reason may simply be that there are A LOT of IT jobs out there nowadays.  Another may be that oftentimes trans people don't like to go out into public very often, and thus end up spending a lot of time with their computers/working on computers because its so easily a non face-to-face activity.

No experience=no job=no experience.
I see so many people getting jobs from their connections with people, that sometimes it's hard to not get envious because I feel better qualified. I hate consumerism and how much we rely on it to create enough jobs needed for us.

Sorry that was sorta a ranty post, but I definitely can understand how you feel. I'm only halfway through my Bachelor's, I can't imagine the rejections you face having gone through the trouble of two.

There are not THAT many IT jobs out there, without having an unrealistic amount of experience in a given area.  Companies are looking for an edge, and moving away from the status quo.  There are a lot of job ads out there, and companies love to say that they're desparately in need of help (looks good to investors and intimidates competitors.

I have been on both sides of the desk in the IT field, specifically working for and as a technical recruiter.  Unless you are incredibly good at what you do, technology-wise, or you possess skills in areas not taught in most colloges and universities, you are not going to have much luck.  Beyond the above-mentioned you also have to be able to articulate this to these firms, many of whom expect applicants to be able to rewrite the world.  It's an exponentially more diffcult task for someone who is trans.  I don't know anything, either. ;)

Awesome. What do you write about?

Currently as of this morning, I am wrapping up a 600+ page fantasy/sci-fi epic novel that I have been editing the last 3 months.  Think of it as a "more modern" Illiad, Oddysee, or Beowulf.  Lots of fights, adventures, crazy monsters, and over-the-top characterization to put some flair on my personal philosophical journey disguised as a plot.  As soon as my agent is back in their office, I will be shooting them the (pre-approved) manuscript.  This is a HUGE revision of an old title of mine (that was in bad shape) and the first book I am going to go under the "trans me" as. I'm really trying to leave my old name behind, more so than my gender identity.

I own four copyrights currently.

When it comes to books, I do fantasy/sci-fi, memoirs, and poetry: and will continue to do these things.  I may also write about my trans experience when it is a little further along.

Once in a while I ghost-write under pseudonyms for some political websites, but that's just work I do on the side.  For "proffessional" and confidentiality reasons I can't even hint where I do these.

My job title is "Technical Services Coordinator", and all that really means is I:

-am a database administrator

To be honest, many people have it much worse so count your blessings. I have to transition while working in a all male max prison and even I feel more fortunate then some others who are transitioning.

I work in a big city corporate environment. There is no black & white. I'm surprised I've lasted as long as I have. I'm seriously thinking of walking off the job and quitting IT forever. Everyone is so cookie cutter, perfectly manicured, perfect hair, arrogant ->-bleeped-<-s.

I'm a grad student! Career-wise, I'm not so sure I like it as much as when I started, but grad students can get away with a lot, and my peers are very accepting folks... I'm still sorting out feelings, but if I decide to start going out, I feel like this is a place where I can be myself without being judged.

I work for Greenville Health System, doing silly warehouse stuff. I have an inventory history from retail which helped me get the job (and after 5 years at a Wal-Mart in a supervisory position, it was quite a welcome change). Before that I was a computer programmer for a now-dead sign company.

I'll put another version of my "work" here.  I used to be a software engineer but I'm now retired.  I do voluntary work with an LGBT helpline where the  team are well aware of my status.  I also volunteer with a charity doing social work with people harmed by loneliness.  The other volunteers know my history but it isn't relevant for the clients.  Has anyone else made such a change from introvert geek guy to socially aware woman?

Kinda, but I have Asperger's and I'm socially inept regardless and don't have much desire to be. I'm doing all I can, where as before my introversion was so severe that I wouldn't talk to anyone not immediately related to me (which made college a huge pain in the ass). I try to help local trans* people in the support group, but from outside of the support group... because I find their name offensive, their core group is extremely clique-y, and while it's led by some extremely well-intentioned people, I just didn't fit in. So I spend a lot of time talking people down from suicidal thoughts, trying to help people get to therapy, and sharing resources in upstate SC.

My Asperger's diagnosis said severely affected.  I didn't agree because I had a wife and a job, and I know several Aspies who aren't likely to have either.  I haven't been reassessed but I would now put myself as borderline to mild Aspie.

A fellow Aspie! How fascinating. I've been diagnosed as severe too, but I do work and did get married. She had to pursue me like a hound, however, and often remarks now that she can see how I am now so she understands why. I just don't pick up on flirting... at all. How I made it in retail was taking positions with minimal interaction or in areas of fascination (electronics, inventory). All supervisory positions, where I mainly had to deal with employees and not customers. I told them when I was being interviewed that I would be most valuable in ways that utilized my abilities to solve problems and learn systems, not with people. Due to my affinity for systems, however, I ended up being the store's go-to for virtually anything about how to make their inventory management system work the most effectively, because for whatever reason normals there didn't get it. Most people found me very off-putting, because I don't like talking, but upper management sent them all to me anyway. Towards the end, they didn't know what to do with me any longer. I had no job title and no department. But I'm sure that had more to do with my trans status leaking than anything...

Yet another software engineer here. (self employed)
As an employee, I test these stupid in-car devices and box them up, which is not a very fun job but the other employees there sure do brighten up the day.
Will eventually move back into IT, but I had to leave my last programming job as my boss wasn't paying me. (still hasn't!)

Yikes, take care of yourself...the male sex drive is SO strong, and in THAT environment you could be a REAL target.  And they are probably very violent, too.  I think that quite honesty I would be scared to have your job, as a trans woman.  But more power to you!

I work as an English professor at a large university in Latin America.  I have a significant number of private clients, too.

4 and a half weeks on estradiol valerate and micronized progesterone, and I sure feel great, with always erect protruding nipples a just a little growth in the chest area, and a little rounder and more feminine.

No more acne, no more body odor, already a little softer and smoother skin on parts of my face, maybe even a little "shine" or "glistening" on a small part of my face.

I think my eyes look slightly different, too.  Not a lot, but a little.

Wow, I am SO happy and I feel GREAT!
