I'm sorry you got bitten, but I don't see any serious derailing in that thread.
They've stayed on the topic of "nasty creatures" for the most part.
Just because they don't have pity for your bites does't mean they're giving you "a bad time".

Abby Hoffman had a book titled "Steal This Book!"

It was his treatise on revolution and violence in the US during the Vietnam era.

It didn't sell too well...

However, 1 mil. copies were not returned to the publisher and that was in the early seventies as I recall. A large number for the time. :)

Virginia, sorry about the hobo spiders. Have you tried insecticide bombs for the house to mitigate your chances of having them in your home. Just thinking that might lead to fewer bites.

To date there have been over 200 million copies of Steal This Book printed.  No idea on how many were obtained by five finger discount, but more than enough to make Abbie's estate pretty wealthy - especially for an anarchist yippie.

necrotic arachnidism, which is almost identical to the local effects produced by brown recluse spider, Loxosceles reclusa, poisoning

The brown recluse is very common here in South Florida. When bit by one, its a trip to the ER for anti-biotics.

A few years ago when I got my first Hobo bite I mistook it for a mosquito bite. But then my forearm swelled to twice the size. I had to get antibiotics that time. Now if I notice a bite I put the bite cream on right away. That stops the bite area from progressing, but you still get rather sick. We also have Brown Recluse spiders. But they are less prominent here and not as aggressive as the Hobo. But I understand the Recluse bite is very dangerous

They HIGHLY suggest staying in the States. In fact Carlos, if I understand his English correctly, is saying "you gringos are stupid. Stay where you have food, amigo."

* The Coast Guard intercepted a vintage Chevy a few years back. Yes an actually Chevy from the pre-JFK adminstration. The guys rigged it to not only FLOAT. But to operate as a boat over 90 miles of open water. It was the second time they had made it to within sight of shore. They sent these guys back? ??? There really is no off season NFL stuff, they are even trying to cut down the number of preseason games - too dangerous, so the NFL will be back in September, like always.

Giants' yeech.  Yeah we're in second place, but 8 games back, behind the Dodgers who don't even have their star.

Ever notice how some NFL players act rather fem.? That's one thing I like about the NFL. They don't really care who moves the ball down field. As long as someone does and everyone plays nice as to specified rules  Plus they give allot to charity.

Dodgers and Giants? Now there's a rivalry. But Eight games back? that's gonna be hard to get over. Glad I'm not or wish I was in Vegas for that showdown

Didn't someone tell me recently that they are even talking about adding a couple of games to their regular season now? And "all those big guys hitting each other" has been said to be the equivalent of undergoing a head-on car crash at speed weekly. Plus all of these fellas they're writing about these days whose concussions and injuries due to all of that "hitting" are making them comatose, vegetative and paraplegics by 45 would seem to mitigate toward someone with some sense cutting back on games as well.

One of the great things about unabashed & unabated greed is that nothing stops it except death, no matter the costs. And "society" is concerned that adding surgical costs to medical insurance will make for higher medical costs. I'd say care and treatment for current and former NFL players would exceed the costs for every last person in the USA who desires to have an SRS paid-for through a national health care program to have that SRS.

I'm compiling a lovely book list for myself right now!  Over the past few months I've been keeping track of recommendations and interesting reviews and now, this summer, is the perfect time to start making inroads.  It's an awesome and mighty list.  So far we have:

2 Etymology books, one in dictionary form and one in narrative form
2 Fiction, one in which Einstein dreams of different worlds where time flows differently, and one about a guy with multiple personalities. This number will likely rise soon once I get the name of some books my friend wanted to recommend.
1 about Manhattan and the way it looked before "civilization" came and turned it into a city, complete with illustrations
1 about the psychology behind why humans make so many tiny mistakes
And a companion to Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

::happy sigh::

Just about every book in this list makes my substantial geeky side squeal with delight.

Few things are better to blow $200 on than books. :D

Before you read to the end, does anybody know what the main ingredient of WD-40 is?  Don't lie and don't cheat.  WD-40.  Who knew?  I had a neighbor who had bought a new pickup.  I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason).  I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news.  He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open.  Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off.  It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck.  I'm impressed!
WD-40 who knew?  'Water Displacement #40' The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts.  WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company.  Its name comes from the project that was to find a 'water displacement' compound..  They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40.  The Convair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts.
Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you.  When you read the 'shower door' part, try it.  It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door..  If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass.  It's a miracle!  Then try it on your stove top ...  Viola!  It's now shinier than it's ever been.  You'll be amazed.
Here are some other uses:
1.  Protects silver from tarnishing.
2.  Removes road tar and grime from cars.
3.  Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.
4.  Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making them slippery.
5.  Keeps flies off cows.
6.  Restores and cleans chalkboards.
7.  Removes lipstick stains.
8.  Loosens stubborn zippers.
9.  Untangles jewelry chains.
10.  Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.
11.  Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.
12.  Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing.
13.  Removes tomato stains from clothing.
14.  Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.
15.  Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.
16.  Keeps scissors working smoothly.
17.  Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.
18.  It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor!  Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff
marks on flooring.  It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as
hard to get them off.  Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.
19.  Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly!  Use WD-40!
20.  Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.
21.  Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers.
22.  Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.
23.  Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.
24.  Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.
25.  Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.
26.  Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.
27.  Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans
28.  Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling.
29.  Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.
30.  Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.
31.  Removes splattered grease on stove.
32.  Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.
33.  Lubricates prosthetic limbs.
34.  Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell).
35.  Removes all traces of duct tape.
36.  Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.
37.  Florida 's favorite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.'
38.  The favorite use in the state of New York , WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.
39.  WD-40 attracts fish.  Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no
time.  Also, it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose.
Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some
       states.
40.  Use it for fire ant bites.  It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.
41.  WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls.  Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.
42.  Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick
with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash.  Presto!  The lipstick
       is gone!
43.  If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to
       start.
P.  S.  The basic ingredient is FISH OIL.

I did not know that it had fish oil in it, but I knew about the spraying of bait when you go fishing.

As an old fisherman once told me: "It keeps your bait from squeaking".  ;D

I use it for everything,  It will remove tape residue, clean your hands and a lot of other things.  But don't use it in your door locks, it cause them to gum up and get sticky.  Use it to free them up followed by a graphite.

I'd say care and treatment for current and former NFL players would exceed the costs for every last person in the USA who desires to have an SRS paid-for through a national health care program to have that SRS.

Interesting theory.  Some of that might depend on accounting.  For example they tend to die young (thus needing less care).*  Secondly, the often tend to die of heart attacks, which are pretty cheap in comparison to cancer for example.  You know, if your dead before you hit the floor, all your really paying for is a ride in the wambulance and a doctor to pronounce you DOA and sign off.

Second, and I think this is key - they produce money.  The 'average' NFL player makes $1.5 million a year, so you can buy a lot of insurance to cover just about anything with that kind of jack. Moreover long term care and all that is covered by the players union and the teams.  The NFL conservatively makes (off ticket sales, TV contracts, and merch) about $100 billion dollars a year.**  I'd say that if the TG population as a whole were making that much, people would be happy to cover us too.

*While U.S. life expectancy is 77.6 years, recent studies suggest the average for NFL players is 55, 52 for linemen.

** For comparison, the last year of the Bush II administration they asked for 190 Billion for the war.

Back to the NFL, when I was first watching there was guy called the "fridge" I think at the time the biggests guy in the NFL (As in heavy). Now every team has defensive and offensive lines at 300lb plus. This is not possible by genetic breeding. It's only possible by drug abuse. Why don't the NFL and the players get serious about it (Yea money). But that's why they die young.

Cindy. - I'm just going to spray some WD40 on my genetalia to if it has a miracle there

Well that guy was William Perry, for the Chicago Bears.  Some people are getting bigger, go look at a suit of armor and think "wow, that was built for the biggest 'bad ass' on the old feudal block.  But its about money and wining not health.  I know a lot of people in a lot of different occupations who give up a health deal to make money, or do what they want.  I.E. I don't anyone my own age who does my job who is not way, way deaf.  Occupational hazard. What did you say?  On the plus side, I've learned to read lips.

And, its not just NFL dudes, lots of athletes in competitive sports tend to die younger than average, and the tendency is for their heart to give out.  I don't think its the drugs alone, its the way they push their bodies so hard, so far, so fast I would think.

What is a vampire?

According to the classical definition that reigned in the middle-age, a vampire is an animated corpse that survives by drinking the blood of the living. It also has a demonic nature and is a servant of Satan, dedicated to spreading its evil throughout the world. Bram Stocker added many desirable traits to the vampire, and the myth was later explored and refined by numerous artists and philosophers.

The body of a vampire is technically dead by human standards. It can be said that a vampire's body is in a state of arrested decay, animated by a supernatural force or spirit residing in its corporeal form, and kept vital by some magical energy that some refer as ichor.

Vampires usually appear as "normal" humans do, unless they are aroused by bloodlust or enraged. In such cases, the appearance of two, reticulating canine-like fangs may be seen; accompanied by red eyes and a rather predacious countenance.

Vampires to do not cast their reflections on mirrored surfaces (although they do cast shadows).
Their images cannot be captured on film, videotape, or digital video. Likewise, the sound they make (vocal or otherwise) cannot be captured on either digital or analog recording devices.

The vampire requires fresh human blood for sustenance. Human blood is the preference of all vampires, although they can sate themselves on lower mammalian forms of life for short periods of time. New or "young" vampires need to feed once every two nights in order to sustain their existence.

The necessary amount of human blood consumed during feeding varies between one-half and one full quart. Some "older" vampires and Vampire Regents can resist their bloodlust and survive for longer periods without feeding; sometimes over a span of several weeks to a whole month.

However, a vampire deprived of viable sustenance for protracted amounts of time will rapidly "age" until it reaches its actual age - ordinarily proving to be fatal, as most vampires are older than the average human lifespan. In theory then, it is possible to "starve" a vampire into destruction. The inherent flaw in this method of destroying a vampire is that the vampire hunter may have to endure while waiting for what could be days or weeks.

In The Beginning

First Man: I think, I think I am, I think.

Establishment: Of course you are my bright little star.

And miles
Of files
Pretty files of your forefather's fruit
And now to suit our
Great computer
You're magnetic ink.

First Man: I'm more than that, I know I am, at least, I think I must be.

Inner Man: There you go, man, keep as cool as you can.
Face piles
And piles
Of trials
With smiles
It riles them to believe
That you perceive
The web they weave
And keep on thinking free.

Psychic Vampires - And How To Deal With Them

QuoteThe psychic vampire is, of course, a very close relation to the more widespread and "popular" blood vampire that appears in literature, film and popular drama, the epitome of which is Count Dracula. The principle remains the same from physical blood-lusting vampire to psychic energy-grabbing vampires in that the Count drains the life force through the actual physical blood whereas the psychic vampire is more subtle, draining the life force by destroying the "will" of its victim.

If you have answered YES to any one of the questions,
that is a definite warning that you MAY be an alcoholic.

If you have answered YES to any two, CHANCES ARE that you are an alcoholic.

If you have answered YES to three or more, YOU ARE DEFINITELY AN ALCOHOLIC.

Identification of those who have fully transitioned as "trans-anything" is at best demeaning & at worst deceptive.

Fully Transitioned = Post GRS

Do all your cell phone biz from underwater.

The Feds cant track you is the plus.

The drawback of course is trying to use the cell phone while underwater.

The Colossus of Rhodes

"The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek god Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes on the Greek island of Rhodes by Chares of Lindos between 292 and 280 BC. It is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Before its destruction, the Colossus of Rhodes stood over 30 meters (107 ft) high, making it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world."

What's amazing about that Talking Heads record was that he got away with a song like Listening Wind, which I'm sure today would get him arrested.

Mojique sees his village from a nearby hill
Mojique thinks of days before Americans came
He sees(serves) the foreigners in growing numbers
He sees the foreigners in fancy houses
He dreams of days that he can still remember...now.

Mojique holds a package in his quivering hands
Mojique sends the package to the American man
Softly he glides along the streets and alleys
Up comes the wind that makes them run for cover
He feels the time is surely now or never...more.

The wind in my heart
The wind in my heart
The dust in my head
The dust in my head
The wind in my heart
The wind in my heart
(Come to) Drive them away
Drive them away.

Mojique buys his equipment in the market place
Mojique plants devices through the free trade zone
He feels the wind is lifting up his people
He calls the wind to guide him on his mission
He knows his friend the wind is always standing...by.

Mojique smells the wind that comes from far away
Mojique waits for news in a quiet place
He feels the presence of the wind beside(around) him
He feels the power of the past behind him
He has the knowledge of the wind to guide him...on.

New x-ray machines could make airport security hassle-free

Backscatter x-ray technology, a new system meant to make airport security searches easy and non-contact, brings with it concerns about privacy and effectiveness. With the multitude of issues at stake (touched upon recently by William Saletan over at Slate), we thought it was a good topic to mark the return of Shift, SCI FI Tech's regular column, and every day this week one of our new columnists will chime in with his or her take on the controversial system. First up is Peter Suciu, who wonders what all the fuss is about.

Who Is Desdemona?

"Desdemona is a female heroine in William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello. She is the daughter of Senator Brabantio of Venice, and defies her father by secretly marrying Othello, a soldier of Moorish ancestry. Scholars are divided as to the merits and true personality of the character. Some experts believe that she is the ultimate personification of a traditional woman, ruled by her heart and loyal to her husband even as he murders her. A contradictory interpretation is that the character is a woman far ahead of her time who believes herself to be Othello's total equal, and her death is a result of a society unprepared for a feminist point of view."

Having accomplished her five hundreth post in three years,
Heather Rose has attained the rank of "FAMILY". Along with
this title, all rights and privileges afforded to one reaching such
a prestigeous social level, has been bestowed upon her.

During Ms. Heather Rose's acceptance speech, during the presentation
ceremony, held at the opulent H.R. Towers, where she received the much
coveted "Suzy", she was heard to say, "Please allow me to take this
opportunity to thank all the little people who made all of this possible,

Oh gone are the days when I would have time for a trip to SF while in the area.  These days I fly in and spend the entire week rushing around like a blue arsed fly to various meetings in the Menlo Park<->Santa Clara area. In fact, I'm flying in to SFO on Sunday for another week-long round of blue arsed freneticism.

I will, however, note this recommendation in what little remains of my brain.  Thanks :)
