Title: What is your Phobia?
Post by: Janet_Girl on October 12, 2010, 11:45:27 PM
We talk a lot about phobias.  Homo, Trans etc.  But I am watching NCIS LA and they are showing a girl in a box buried underground.  And of course this sets me off.

I am Claustrophobic.

What fear to you have?

Spiders...There is just no reason, for these little eight legged terrors to ever walk the face of this earth. People say they kill other bugs, well that's great, but so do praying mantises, birds, and so much else, but I don't see them biting people and poisoning them to death....

on a slightly related note, with the exact some rant, changing the species and location around: Jellyfish.

The only other "phobia" I have is not feeling prepared. At times I am terrified of going into situations I don't understand without being prepared,  however not understanding the situation I don't know what to prepare for and I over compensate for situations that are totally unrealistic. I am sure there is a word for that.

Interesting Thread Sis,

Heights. Being caught in a lift (elevator?), happened to me and freaked me out. Flying in small aircraft - see other two phobias  .

I'm not phobic about spiders and snakes etc, but they can alarm me by being suddenly present, the shock thing I think.

Crowds, not sure if it a phobia or an intense dislike, but I avoid to a point of not going to some big events.

Can I expand? Anyone overcome a phobia?

Cindy

I hate needles and injections to the point where I will risk death or hideous pain rather than have one.

I have had teeth drilled and all sorts of minor ops without any pain relief or anesthesia over the years. SRS (and revision) was the ONLY thing for which I would willingly go under a general anesthetic for and even then I refused any pain killers afterward.

I am now HAVING to overcome this as my doctor is insisting on monitoring my blood estrogen level which seems to bend current medical logic.

Sorry Jen,
I have to laugh :embarrassed:, when I need a 'normal' control in the lab I bleed myself. Needle in arm take 10 mls of we go. I've had people look a bit queasy when I do it.

But it is a very common phobia, and what makes it worse you get an adrenaline rush which closes your systemic blood supply and makes it more difficult to bleed you. Which of course builds the cycle.

BTW your Dr and probably lab will argue but you can get enough blood from a finger prick stab ( about 100 microliters) for an E level. I prefer an arm bleed to a finger prick any day.

That used to be mine, once upon a time. I was a needle phobic as they come, it did me in just seeing them.

Funny how life turns out.... I can now stick MYSELF with a needle without an issue in the world.  ;D

I have social phobias (talking on the telephone and begin in a crowd of pepole shouting bad memories) I'm abit better with those situations now. Kinda gotten over it but I feel it abit deep down.

I'm completely unfazed by blood guts and pus (Assuming there not coming out of a another concious living person in whitch case it's horrifying  because of damn empathy) And needles and sharps don't bother me either.

My phobia is Cigarette ends and to a lesser extent cigarettes in general... *shudder* oh god there horrible yuckyuckyuck I'd rather touch rotting roadkill than an ashtray. I'm probably going to be flinching about it all day.

I'm not 100% where this comes from but I suspect it has a large amount to do with my parents smoking around me when I was young like right infront of me and making me ill and often begin negligent and unintantionally burning me on them when handling me ¬.¬

Bugs of any kind, ESPECIALLY spiders.

Social Phobia, especially using the phone. A phone merely ringing makes me feel sick to my stomach

Elevators, I'd rather walk up 12 flights of stairs than use an elevator

My weirdest one, though not sure if it counts as a phobia....spreading toast, the sound of it and the feeling of the scraping actually makes me gag.

Spiders.  I originally disliked them, but then one flew at me when I opened the mailbox and it landed in the car and since then I can't get near spiders without having a panic attack.

Zombies.  I can have what people call "nightmares" but I like them, unless they involve zombies.  Even the mention of zombies will cause me to think of ways to get out of the area if an invasion was to happen.  They're also the only thing that gives me nightmares.

Drowning in an airplane.  I have a major fear of flying over water because I'm terrified of not being able to get out and drowning.

Wow whole lot of phobias here. Maybe you guys should try to get help or something (don't psychologists help people get over phobias, or at least make them more capable of carrying on in life?)

I've been afraid of dogs since before I can remember, don't know why I just had a dog phobia. I would run into the middle of a busy street to get away from a chihuahua. I think I've gotten myself over it for the most part now.

Escalators, I'm not scared of them, I just can't get on one. I panic soon as I touch one. Oi. It wasn't always this way so I have always wondered what changed. I think it gets worse as time passes, not better. Sorry Cindy, but I wish I knew how to get past it as it would save me quite the embarrassment at times.

Heights. Even watching a movie with someone up high, my hands start to sweat.

Puking in public. I will not eat before I leave the house just to make sure I don't accidentally puke in public. I've never had this happen to me though, except when I was in kindergarten, so I don't know why I have this phobia.

E.T.  yea.... the friendly alien. He freaks me the hell out. omg. ugh.

I used to be afraid of heights.  Then I was an electronics technician and sometimes had to work on the antennas on the mast of a ship.  One time I had to go up for an hour while we were underway in Alaskan waters, with the ship taking 10-15 degree rolls.  After that experience, heights don't bother me at all.

I hate flying, but I don't think that it's a phobia as much as I hate the whole rigamarole of going through the airports and then being trapped in a small space with a bunch of other people and with no control of my destiny.

Large men scare me sometimes.  I've been beaten, and a large man oozing testosterone who stands too close with his belly out and talks in a loud, deep voice gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I got rid of one of my strongest phobias during childhood, thanks to a MAD pocket book about pets with a chapter about a case of elk phobia. It was not serious, but taught the principles of phobia therapy. So I learned to expose myself more and more until the phobia went away. Thank you, MAD. And guess what it was?

Phobia of disflated balloons. I mean, when they had been inflated, and lost their air, and become creepy in the sense that they contract themselves when you touch them. During my childhood, I had long periods where i was even afraid of entering a room with such a baloon in it. I could cure it thanks to this MAD book strategy.

During my childhood, I also had a phobia of what was mirrored in my chocolate drink in the morning. There was this lamp and I saw its reflection in double and both became one over and over again, opticfally, as the mirror effect was special. I became afraid of my breakfast drink. This has faded away though.

Otherwise, spiders or snakes, cover me in them and I'll stay cool and break the Guinness world record.

Don't feel bad Marc, my sister is terrified- and I mean terrified- of clowns. She always has been and I don't know why. She's in her mid-20s and still cries when she sees a clown IRL. Then I make fun of her. I'm a bad brother. ;D

I have a crippling fear, though very uncommon- scoleciphobia. But just one group- fly larva. My fear is so bad I can't even say or hear their name. I call them "m"s, fly larva or baby flies. When I see them I become paralyzed in fear and almost catatonic. I swear someday they'll give me a heart attack and kill me. :-\ My family has tried and tried and we can't figure out where this came from. It's ridiculous.

Alektorophobia (fear of chickens).

[mini nero rant] It wouldn't seem like a big deal, since I'm not around farms. But these frightening creatures leave their mark everywhere it seems. Their byproducts are in every kitchen, every restaurant, everywhere. I get nauseous at the smell of people having breakfast or the shells in the trash from someone baking. Why are people so dependent on this creature for virtually every aspect of food service? Are there any countries free of it? Where can I hide?[/end mini nero rant]

On a lighter note, I am also terrified of telephones. I can't even bear to order a pizza. I think it's dysphoria related.

My biggest phobia is public speaking. I had to overcome this back in March (just two weeks after going full time) to go in front of the University Council at the University of Pennsylvania (ALL THE BIG WHIGS WERE THERE and the room had about a hundred people in it) to lobby for inclusion of trans-related medical care in our insurance policy. I thought I was going to pass out. I introduced myself and told them I had a fear of public speaking then gave my speech (on the verge of tears). After it was over the entire room applauded (which NEVER happens at this council). I don't think that will make future public speaking easier but for that speech it was important (not just for me but for all trans at Penn and future ones) that I did this.

I still have a bit of that fear--I make sure all the doors are closed in my apartment before bed, especially the closet doors.  It doesn't help that after watching "The Grudge" my sister went into my closet and slowly opened the door after I turned my lights off and was settling down into bed....or when my dad decided to put a remote-controlled truck in the closet and revved it so it sounded like growling just as I was reading the beginning of "Cujo"....and other such stories.

As a child I used to be terrified of bursting balloons. I hated the shock and the loud noise (I have very good hearing XP)

Due most likely to dysphoria now that I think about it; later on it was social situations. Not a phobia so much, I was just very socially awkward. I still am to a point, but I'm working on it.

Similar to above - relationships. As in, intimate relationships. Even now, although I find men attractive, the thought of being with one just freaks me out. Too many bad memories, I guess.

The one that remains? WASPS. But I'm also too soft to kill them, so whenever one approaches I settle for either freezing or backing away as quickly as I dare to x_x

I have social phobias too, mostly things like talking on the phone, parties, etc.

I'm also pretty scared of heights.

Sometimes I get stupid random fears that terrify me for a while until I get over it. For example, around last Christmas I was convinced someone would break into my house. I was having trouble sleeping because every little noise woke me up. Didn't help that I have cats and they make a lot of noise in the night. But now, I'm not scared at all about it.

Last time I went near a bunch of clowns was three years ago at the haunted trail, I was fine just creeped out and kept walking til they were no where near me. And I use to be scared of needles, got over that when I got my lip pierced lolz wait I'm still a little scared of needle but when it comes to getting tattoos and peircings it don't bother me and I have no idea why heh.

I was gong to say I don't really have any phobias, I'm just F.I.N.E (thats F***ed up, Insecure, Emotional and Neurotic...and I am definitely all of those things), but thinking about it I have a distinct fear of precipices and cliff edges, but not heights and drops (that's Cremnophobia phobia fans), definitely suffer from an acute fear of failure (Atychiphobia if your interested) and there are definitely times when the thought of having to be on my own terrifies me (Monophobia I think it's called).

I will also never leave a message on an answer phone or voice mail if I can possibly avoid it.

However having read this http://phobialist.com/ (http://phobialist.com/) I might just start telling people I have barophobia just because being scared of gravity has to be the best phobia ever.

I don't know if you'd classify it as social phobia, but I hate calling people I've never met. My heart races and I end up staring into my phone and feeling slightly sick. I force myself to do it anyway, though I avoid it if at all possible.

Oddly enough, I'm (mostly, only a little bit twitchy) ok if it's to a business, or via email or sms. I still triple check everything before I send it though.

I don't like phoning people, because to me it's about the same as repeatedly belting them over the head with a foam bat and screaming "TALK TO ME!!! ME ME ME ME ME!!! NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW!!!". It's rare that I have something to say that needs to be paid attention to at that instant, so I'm happier letting people get back to me when it's more convenient for them. I also prefer it when people treat me the same way. I don't see email or sms as "less personal" at all - just "less invasive".

I used to be a lot worse. I couldn't post on forums for a start. I joined up here and forced myself to post to try and fix that. I still read everything more than twice before I post, but I don't even get slightly nervous anymore. I used to be terrified.

I also don't like the crowded areas. In a crowded waiting room, train, or break room I have the most terrible time choosing a seat. I can never pick who's personal space I'll invade. Sometimes, when I can, I just leave.

I hate invading other peoples personal space, and I hate having my personal space invaded (exception : if I think you're hot, then you get a free pass into my personal space with my blessing ).

Another weird phobia - I had this car that had broken down on me so many times, and generally been a pain (3 years owned, 3 months running. Bad car) that I actually developed a fear of driving it!

I would pull up (that's when it'd usually die), and start uncontrollably shaking. Last time I drove it I shook so bad I almost stalled it. That sucked, because I actually really liked that car. I even swapped the engine out, spent a heap of time and money on it. After that it ran well, but I could never get over the shakes. In the end, I had no choice but to sell it.

After that, when I'm stopped somewhere and the revs change slightly (or look like they're about to drop) I still get a bit nervous. I'm getting over it with the new car and learning to relax again, but I think I'll always be in the habit of scanning my gauges and listening for noise changes a bit more than most people.

All my phobias share the same weird feature - I can mentally control myself, but it's the physical effects such as shaking and wanting to throw up that I find overwhelming.

I dislike some things in this thread - crowds, "fly larvae", wasps (both kinds ;)), brutish aggressive people - but they don't inspire the irrational fear response.

Oh, one last one - I'm absolutely terrified of being outed at work. It's a matter of social survival. But I'm sure many of us can relate.

I don't really have any phobias that affect me in day-to-day life but I certainly have them in dreams when I sleep. Therefore I would say my most consistent phobia is that of technical failures. I routinely have dreams where someone or multiple people are trying to kill me and guns or other weapons fail to fire, fall apart, or are ineffective at stopping the attackers. Then I will often have dreams where I'm driving a car and the brakes fail yet despite pulling the emergency brake I can't get the car to stop. For miles and miles going through red lights, narrowly avoiding oncoming trains, and old ladies in wheelchairs about to get run over, instead of the car gradually coasting to a stop, it keeps going faster and faster and more out of control. I've had dreams where I am piloting an airplane and either can't get the plane to take off and the runway is running out or I'm trying to land it and again it won't descend and the runway room is running out. I've had dreams where I'm in mines or submarines and something went wrong and they are either filling with water or slowly caving in. I had a dream not too long ago where I was in a plane travelling so high that there was no more gravity and I looked out and saw the entire planet Earth below. Somehow the door accidently opened and I floated out of it and the entire dream was trying to get back to the plane. The worst are computers. Suddenly my PC will become a blue or black screen with text scrolling about the nuclear bomb or other explosive that is about to detonate. The more I'm trying to get the computer not to explode the closer it is getting to going boom.

This makes me think we depend too much on technology.

Bugs (especially moths) and I don't know if these count, but I really don't like undressing in front of others or using the restroom with others (or being anywhere near anybody when I have to go to the bathroom).

I recall seeing that hating undressing in front of others is an actual phobia but I don't know about the bathroom one.

hmmm I have lots of things I fear and I'm willing to admit that.. but then again I did have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder (gotten past both of them mostly).. but still I sometimes find myself fearing realitvely stupid things and more serious things from occaison to occasion.

Numba 1 fear at this time in mah life would be around Transition... for some reason choosing not to transition due to some kind of social pressure and living in this gawdaweful limbo for the rest of my life.. or transitioning and finding out it was a horrible mistake (though that seems highly hihgly unlikely)

Lesseee other things that scare me on occaison - demon movies, noises in the night, peoples gaydar (not reading as male to those especially attuned with their inner gaydar), my dad, and uhhhhhh babies.

Probably the thing that frightens me the most is the thought of being sound asleep by myself in my own apartment and waking at 3 am to the silhouette outline of an unknown man standing by my bed.

oh woops, i forgot, mine are, even though I've stated them somewhere else:
any social situation parties, meeting new people
using the phone - first 2 probably dysphoria related
driving - due to moms yelling and being way too freakin tense most of the time i tried driving practice
it used to be talking to my mom about anything but coming out to her and her taking it really well changed that, too bad i can't drive with her in the car or anywhere in sight ever again >:(
also i hate mirrors but i don't know if you could call it a phobia. it's obviously from my wrong body.

i kinda don't get how people can be afraid of the clown from the Stephen King movie IT, Tim Curry is hilarious in that movie. a lot of things are funny that are supposed to be scary. he's just a freakin riot in the library scene

I used to be afraid of elevators and then a couple bad experiences got me over it. When I was little I pressed the button the doors opened, but there was no elevator, just dark empty shaft. My first though was that the lights were off, not that there was no elevator. So I had already lifted my foot and nearly took a step. Second time I was in an elevator and it actually dropped. It really wasn't that bad. We got to the floor, doors didn't open, then it just dropped. Turns out elevators have side breaks, you can't just go plummeting down. You just drop ~2 feet. I guess you could if the side breaks fail. They work with gravity though so chances are they wont. It was over before there was really enough time to panic. Just had to step up to my floor, which is the most dangerous part. If it drops again you could be cut in two.

I think my only two real phobias are darkness and heights. I will probably use my night light for the rest of my life.

As for heights, one time I had to walk over a railroad trestle and I had to have my mom and stepdad hold my hands the entire time. Good thing I hadn't seen Stand By Me before then...I was Vern Tessio that day.

Small spiders.

I used to never really be scared of them, but there was this spider on the ceiling and it kept climbing down on a piece of webbing and it was smaller than a dime and I about had a heart attack.  It was so scary.

I'm a chicken, so I've many.

I'm afraid of ridicule, the dark, crowds, blood, injections (I'm SO going to take transdermal hormones), pain, bees and wasps, gross stuff (including, but not limited to, bugs and spiders, fattingly fat food, raw meat, too much sexual stuff),  death, death and death.

Oh, and I'm a little xenophobic, but I guess that's understandable, since where I live there's like 1% non-white people, 2% non-French speakers, 10% non-catholics, etc. But while I've some "fear of the unusual" I'll never, ever, discriminate people [at least not consciously] though.

Something I wonder about : is it racist to say I'd prefer to be Asian and would not like to be black ? (The hair looks like it's a pain to deal with and Blacks are bigger in average, I believe.)

Not keen on them either. But as an aside I got trapped in a lift (elevator sorry). It went to the very top floor and stopped dead. I was alone. I picked up the phone and hit the printed number. A vocie came on and said hello? I told them I was trapped in elevator number whatever. The person replied Oh I'm trapped in elevator number X. Somehow it was strangely comforting

Ah, fears. This has been an interesting topic to read.

-needles, but I'm getting over that. I just remind myself they don't actually hurt, just a pinch, just like the nurses say... I've even taken to pinching myself now and then, just to say, see? That wasn't so bad.
-hugs from men. I was abused by a guy who hugged me a lot, so I'm sure that's where it came from. But it gives me the shakes so bad. Women I could hug all day long, but men, no way. I can't even hug my dad without getting scared. I have only been able to hug one guy since then, someone at college. He's just the nicest person in the world. There's this other guy at college who is a big hugger, and I've explained to him that he needs to stop, that it scares me... And he still does it... He always apologizes, or shows to me that he's just like, one arm hugging me instead of fully hugging me. It's like, you idiot, don't remind me at all! I want to sock him so hard but I know he'd cry or something. Ugh.
-the dark. I sleep with my lamp on x_x I don't like not being able to see what's around me.
-Buzzing sounds that I can't find the origin of. Like, if a bee flies behind me, my whole back twinges. But, I love bees :) They're adorable. Just the buzzing.
-A weirder fear of mine is not being able to yell/losing my voice/not being able to call for help in times of desperation. That is my most frequent nightmare. I have no idea why, it's never happened to me while awake, just in my dreams.
-I have a fear of being told what to do in bed. Even if it's something simple, it's so bad I have to stop and go somewhere else.

I don't know what the terms are for these phobias, or if they have terms. They're just my fears :)

Spiders- especially when I see them one second and don't know where they are the next. Or when I walk into a web, because a web means a spider is somewhere and I don't know where.
Needles- I developed this one recently, I don't know why, but I can get a shot or blood drawn, I'm just tense as hell when the needle is inserted.

Oh god. I have plenty of small minor ones:
1.) Bees, wasps, etc - due to severe allergy
2.) My ankle being cut
3.) Public Speaking
4.) Abandonment
5.) Being surrounded by people
6.) Abuse
etcetc

But my biggest one that has been there all my life and that is really strong? Emetophobia - fear of regurgitation.

It used to be so bad that if someone said the "TH***-UP", V-word, B-word, or P-word I would go into a severe panic attack right then and there and start scratching at my face and jabbing myself with the nearest sharp object, including my nails. Or I would run and attempt to jump off heights or into traffic.
If the action near me? I would literally start having seizures.

And people would tease me into these states.

Back when the words really affected me, about 5 therapists... all I went to, would say the word and almost even laugh at me that I was that afraid (one actually did laugh, called me a wimp and I got her fired).

I've always wanted help with this. It was getting better as I grew up. But then Hurricane Katrina happened, and my mate and I had a fight in which she threatened to regurgitate on me and I had my very first seizure... as I mentioned above I started to get them. She would continue to use that as a weapon on me the first year I was with her, so it really got bad. That and it just seemed to happen EVERYWHERE. It was mentioned all the time, it happened in the house, it would be present...
I was starting to get scared of going outside, watching movies, reading books, or anything. I wanted to hide. Each time I was faced with it, I was so close to suicide.

No therapist I have gone to as taken me seriously, they are more concerned with my father molesting me then something that is PRESENTLY making it to where I couldn't go to school, work, or even was unwilling to eat.

I still don't know what to do. I'm presented with it almost all the time. Just recently there was TWICE in elevators in the past month. I don't go to clubs, bars or even anywhere NEAR them. I feel like my life is surrounded by it, and that I'll always live in such fear.

I get flashbacks from what started my entire phobia each time. I had gotten food poisoning from a buffet. My father locked me into the bathroom (he put his heavy chair out the door) for 6 days, sliding only minimal food under the door, and I had water from the faucet to drink. I was heavily in anxiety that it had high amounts of blood and started to be pure black. I passed out quite a few times. I didn't have anything to do in there, and it's when I started cutting myself because I wanted to die. I was 7 at the time.

Apologies that I got this in detailed. I feel really weak as it is right now, and this might be the only chance that I could even vaguely appropriately even mention it.

I had a fear of heights but it went away when I did bungee jumping (yes, you can survive it, and yes, after it, you can get over it!  ;D) - it's so awesome I want to do it again!
My current phobias are two: menstruating through my pants (that's why I own 40 pairs of underwear and use 3 every time that time of the month comes) and adolescent boys. The latter is the worse one. The kind of teasing they do terrifies me to death and if I see that I have to pass a group of 15-year-old boys, I don't go. I can go only if I have music in my ears so I'm sure I won't hear anything through it.

I have two phobias, and they're both weird. One of them is so weird that it doesn't even have a scientific name. XD

The first: Trypophobia. Fear of clusters or holes. If you're curious about it, google image search it. Most of the pictures that show give me the willies.
Second: Candles. Not fire. I can attend a bonfire no problem, but the minute you light a measly little birthday candle, I freak out and have to go as far away as possible. I honestly have no idea why I have this fear, because I haven't always had it...

I have a phobia of corpses and blood. My fear of blood is unusual, because it is purely subconscious. I can see oodles of blood in movies and enjoy it, but if I see even a drop or two directly from the source, I instantly become dizzy, lightheaded, and faint feeling. If I see images or videos of people dying or dead, I get panic attacks. I am not scared of blood, but I react exactly like someone who is.

Developed a fear of electricity after I stuck two pieces of metal in an outlet.
Developed a fear of dogs for awhile after a German shepherd bit my face.
Claustrophobia when I got older.
Being in a tall building which sways in the wind since 9/11.

Riding on a ferris wheel - I could stand going up on the backward movement but would panic coming down frontwards.  Learned if I relaxed I could enjoy it

Also had that dream where I was trying to stop the vehicle I was driving and couldn't, then one day it seemed to happen.  I was pulling into a space while the car next to me was backing out causing an illusion that my car wasn't stopping.  Almost ripped the emergency brake handle off!

Thank you very much, but I still get outed from time to time by people who are used to being around trans folks. I just need to get used to the fact that there will always be those who can tell. It's always just so discouraging when it happens though. I'm very obsessive that way. I still assume that most people can tell whenever I'm in public. It's a bad habit of mine.  ::)

I'm not the only person afraid of escalators? I had no idea. It takes me several seconds of standing, staring at the steps before I can move onto them at the right time. And I have a huge fear of falling and not being able to get up in time to avoid those teeth things at the end of escalators... I have had terrible nightmares about really fast escalators where that happens. Up or down.

Wasps. Can't be in the same area as one. Freaky old baby dolls. Elevator doors. Anything or anyone touching my neck  (which led to a vampire phobia until I was 13 or 14 - sanguivoriphobia). And everyone mocks me for that last one, including my aunt who used to think I was just jumpy and not phobic, and decided to stand behind me and press two fingers into my neck... I totally freaked out, hunched my shoulders, screamed, fell to the ground shivering. Every time. I thought I'd gotten over it because I was ok with my boyfriend touching my neck, but no. Mom had seen a hickey on my neck and took this as a sign that I was cured of this phobia, so she gave me an unexpected neckrub and I still panicked and started shaking. Until this year I couldn't sleep unless I had a blanket over my neck, protecting it. If I tried to expose my neck at night I wouldn't last a full minute. I just don't get it. >:(

I cured my height phobia, I decided it was absurd when I was about 12 and started climbing onto the roof. Even if it took 15 minutes to get myself to start the descent (which was by far the worst part), I still did it. Kept doing it. If there was a ladder inside I'd climb to the top every chance I got. And now heights just make me a bit dizzy, otherwise I can handle it.

I'm not the only person afraid of escalators? I had no idea. It takes me several seconds of standing, staring at the steps before I can move onto them at the right time.

After being thrown down a flight of stairs, I had an intense phobia of escalators and ordinary stairs. I still feel a bit sick getting onto an escalator some days and I freak out if someone comes down a flight of stairs toward me when I'm walking up.

Tight spaces, clothes. I'm claustrophobic.

And the dentist. But every once in a while I force myself to go.

I'm sure these have been mentioned plenty of times, but mine are insects and arachnids... anything creepy-crawly makes me go into panic mode, especially if it can sting or bite. Butterflies and fireflies and praying mantis' I love, however.

Falling. That's a really big one. I used to wake from recurring nightmares of falling off buildings or cliffs.

I do have a slight social phobia, I really prefer to go unnoticed in large crowds. If I'm at the mall for example and I suddenly feel peoples eyes on me, I just want to get away. I start feeling WAY too warm and uncomfortable and panicky. It's always been that way. If I'm at a party among friends it's a completely different situation, I can be the center of attention with no problem.

Just remembered another one: tornadoes. Thankfully, I live in an area where natural disasters are very uncommon, but tornadoes are one thing we get in Minnesota.
Just this past summer tornadoes got to be pretty common around where I live, and I completely panic when tornadoes are around, even if there is no immediate threat.
I live in central Minnesota and I traveled with my SO to southern MN to pick up a Dodge Charger he was buying. On the way back, we stopped in a small town so I could use the restroom. The sky was nearly black and sirens were blaring, and when we tried to get into a grocery store (for shelter and a place to pee), the doors were locked. We couldn't even get to a safe place if tornadoes got too close. So... I was locked outside with tornadoes. Yeah, I was freaking out pretty bad.

I only have two phobias, though the reactions to them are immense. First off is a fear of thunderstorms, I almost got struck once, was 30 feet from where a bolt of lightning hit, knocked me flat on my ass from just the "impact" I guess you would call it, I really can't explain it, but it was deafening and I was dazed for about ten minutes afterwards, thankfully it hit a water main and not me but still, you never forget that deafening sound, now any time lightning starts striking too close I freak out and refuse to go outside, shame too, I use to watch the lightning when I was younger cause I found it cool, but stuff happens I guess. Second is a big fear that I'm going to have to fight to transition, and that's a fear of hypodermic needles, I'm cool with tattoo needles and piercing needles, but hypodermics freak me out unless I'm able to fully inspect both the vial, the needle and do the injection myself after fully inspecting what's going into me, I guess it's more of a case of I'm scared of hypodermic needles when they're in someone else's hands, then again I was a fricking pin cushion for doctors when I was younger when they kept trying to shove all these different meds which didn't do jack on me and calling for blood tests every week. But that's a fear I'm going to have to fight, in truth, it is my biggest fear in transitioning.

I'm impervious to all sorts of bugs.
I've learned that if you go get a piece of paper to smush them, by the the time you get back they'll have hidden.
I just smash them with my bare hands now.
I leave daddy-long-legs alone, although I do get annoyed if they walk across my face at night and wake me.

Elevators are fun. I used to go ride the weights.
You get on the roof of the elevator either through the hatch or by opening a door on the floor above where the elevator is.
You use the inspection controls on top of the elevator to place the car halfway up the shaft.
At this point you are adjacent to the counterweights on steel cables.
You step off the car and onto the counterweights and and hold onto the steel cables.
You have your friend send the car to the basement and the counterweights to the top of the shaft.
Note: Be very careful if your friend decides to send the car up and pass by the counterweights.

Dude, I.. I know this sounds extremely stupid, but.. I'm deathly terrified of sunfish.  Ugh.  Disgusting, horrifying creatures.  Ughhhhh.. and spiders.  Especially the sun spiders we get here in California.

Seems that animals with "sun" in the name terrify me, lol.  BUT LOOK AT THEM...
Title: Re: What is your Phobia?

Sunfish are disturbing, I agree. Spiders don't bother me, but I googled sun spiders and they look like frightening things. Phobias of specific species make sense to me. I hate all wasps, for example, but Asian giant hornets are effing terrifying. They can kill you. It actually makes me wary of travelling to parts of Asia. I would in fact avoid certain parts to avoid it.

Mostly big dogs...mainly due to the fact I was bitten in the hand at age 5 by a dog I was trying to pet.  I had to go the hospital and get stitches...it was all a terrifying event for me.  I still have the scars!  Then again in my teenager years when I was visiting my grandma and she let me inside and I kid you not, 2 seconds after going inside her dog ran up to me and bit my leg.  I screamed and yelled profanities and all my grandma could say is, "Watch your mouth!" as I writhed in pain.   :'(  Ever since then...I don't trust ANYBODY who says, "Oh my dog won't bite you, hes a sweetheart."

Sick people. I hate hospitals because they are filled with them. I guess it's an irrational fear of getting sick as well. But hospitals give me the creeps.
That and blood. I hate seeing it out of the body. My friend got a nose bleed one time and I almost passed out. How weak is that? xD

Being caught in a lift (elevator?), happened to me and freaked me out.

Me too on above, this has happened to me a couple of times in life, and it's the worst being stuck in a elevator, not knowing when you are getting out, or if the thing is going to plunge 20 stories to your doom. I would add I am mildly claustrophobic, don't think I could be a spelunker, tight spaces get annoying, one time I had a tunnel I dug partially collapse on me when I was young, I think that did me in...

Overcoming fears is something I've gotten really good at over the years....Like overcoming the fear to transition, and overcoming my own internalized transphobia(s).

Interesting to read other's responses today in this classic post....

My Common ones:
   +Spiders
+Alone in the dark (gotten better though)

My Weird ones:
+Balloons.  ...yeah stick one near me and I back away. I'm afraid of them popping near me. Have an odd sense that it
would hurt me and my ears are sensitive I don't like the noise.
   +Being Jumped Over.
+Dams   I'm TERRIFIED to walk over them. Afraid they'll break or I'll fall in the water or something.
+Holes  only if they are deep and dark, unable to see where they stop.

My "Deep" Ones:
+Being killed by an idiot.   Funny to say, but what I mean by this is there are a lot of people out there who don't think before acting and hurt people for it. Most common example is probably drunk drivers. I just have a deep fear in me of ever being killed by a person that (as haughty as it sounds) is just "more stupid than me." I don't want to die by an "intellectual lesser being."  Idk, it's a weird stupid thing and it sounds even worse trying to explain it but it's just a weird thing I thought I'd be honest about since I have been listing them all. I feel weird saying this XD

I used to live in a place with a water well. Once in awhile I would have to repair the pump and always got an uneasy creepy feeling around the well head. It was just a shallow well. Some of them can be hundreds of feet deep though.

Slugs.

it's a freaking stupid phobia but they absolutely squick me out. I see one, I freeze. I hate them, I loathe them, I want them GONE.

I can deal with snails fine, i love spiders, i've got no real issue with insects or rodents but I hate hate hate slugs. Eeew

and sensory deprivation.
As in total darkness, no sound, no nothing. I don't find it relaxing at all, my idea of hell is a sensory deprivation tank. I would absolutely LOSE it. I remember as a kid having to be taken out of this activity that involved being led through a sort of soft play in the pitch darkness. i panicked, I had to be escorted out mid meltdown. Whoops.

As a result I can't stand being blindfolded and I can't stand complete silence. My biggest fear genuinely seems to be complete sensory deprivation.

ooo just thinking about it freaks me out.

and it's funny because I like to think i'm a pretty fearless person. I mean, I love thrill rides, i've paraglided, i've got no problems with heights or anything like that but put me in a pitch dark room with no sound and I will LOSE IT. Completely and utterly.

I used to have real problems with blood and needles but man, lemme tell ya, decades of borderline hemhoraging on a monthly basis and having regular blood tests for an ongoing hormonal disorder has left me kinda numb to both.
That and growing up with cats who regularly decided to paint the walls in rat entrails. Thanks cats, thanks. *sigh*

I have a lot of wierd things that aren't quite phobias too though.

I HATE reflections in the dark, they creep me right out. Like mirrors or still water in the darkness, the way it reflects these almost shadows is super creepy to my overactive imagination.
I also hate the closed shower curtain if I go to pee in the night because my brain is all "a murderer is hiding there" (bah)
I can't sleep if the wardrobe doors are open and I can't sleep facing AWAY from a door of any sort (be it a wardrobe or a bedroom door) so if i'm in a room that has a door on one side and wardrobe on the other I really struggle to settle. I dunno what the fear IS so much as I just feel really uneasy with my back to a door. Go figure.
Im getting better on that one.

I'm also a super nervous pee-er so if there's a queue or if there's something wierd about the toilet or stall I struggle. Again i'm getting better on that one, I can use portaloos now! I never used to be able to.
So that's progress.

But these are autistic things, apparently the bathroom thing is actually not that uncommon in autistic people. Go figure.

I also do the checking and other obsessive things common in ASD folks. it's annoying but you just gotta do it or it gnaws at you and makes you really anxious.

And i'm not keen on dogs. Again i'm getting better but having been bitten a few times and all the horror stories, i'm wary of them.

but yeah my biiiig phobias are slugs (wth?) and sensory deprivation.
I mean I genuinely hate silence even if there's light. I can't handle it. It like... makes my brain itch.

One thing- clowns. Circus clowns, Bozo. pennywise, statues, paintings. All clowns. I can control it, meaning I don't freak out. But I never took my kids to the circus. Grandma always did that. Neighbor/friend collected clowns. I had to pretend to think they were interesting. He might have picked up on it since he never asked me again.

Funny story about slugs. My daughter was potty training and we were remodeling, leaving an exterior bathroom wall not fully sealed against the outside. She had just done her first "I have to poop " successfully. A minute or two later, she goes back to the bathroom and starts screaming "My poop crawled out of the potty!". On the floor, was the biggest slug I have ever seen- 6-8 inches long and a lot thicker than my  than my thumb. Yes, it looked like her poop had crawled out of the toilet. Fortunately she did not develop a potty problem (a very real concern at that time) or a slug problem. But yes, they are very gross.

AIEEE! I'd have absolutely lost it!

Slugs man, so gross.

Im not keen on toads either but that's because one night I was awoken to this screaming noise and thought the cat had a bird or something. Went downstairs, turned on the light, toad... huge toad, bubbling away and SCREAMING. I didn't even know toads COULD scream! or bubble for that matter.
Being me, I was all "it's just a toad" so I tried to pick it up.
another thing I learned about toads. Not only are they icy cold, they're also REALLY SQUISHY!

It uh.. kinda got thrown.

I'm not proud to say I screamed and woke my step dad up lol.

Damn toad. I learned way more about toads than i ever needed to know in that one night.

Julia,

Do heights bother you too?

Phobia for me?  Well, this is not a phobia per se, but if I think a neighborhood might be really unsafe I would not feel comfortable being alone there for very long, even while driving in my car.  I do not get terrified, I simply feel uncomfortable.

Lol.😂 this is not my phobia but it is my older brother's phobia. I have had a lot of fun with rubber spiders. I once set up a rubber spider with fishing line. When we were watching tv I reached behind the couch and made the spider drop down from the ceiling right in front of his face. Hilarious!! What makes these spider pranks so funny is that Tyler always lets out a high pitched scream.lol. he has such a deep voice that hearing such a high pitched scream come out of him is hilarious!

I know it sounds like I'm evil for doing that but Tyler has pulled MANY practical jokes on me. And he invests time and planning on his pranks. Once when I was 16 I was sitting at the table doing homework and he came up behind me with a pair of scissors. I told him to beat it and he grabbed a large piece of my hair and said he thought he would cut my hair. I told him yeah right. Then he snapped the scissors. I asked him if I was supposed to believe he actually cut my hair and he told me to be the judge and dropped a large chunk of my hair on the table right in front of me. When I saw that I freaked out of course. I ran to the bathroom and tried to see the back of my hair in the mirror but that didn't work so I went running to my dad telling him Tyler had cut my hair. He told me to calm down and let him look. He looked at my hair and even looked under it. He told me my hair was fine and that none of it was missing. Tyler had taken the hair out of my hair brushes over time and then smoothed it out and combed it so it looked like freshly cut hair. I can't even imagine how much time he spent smoothing and combing it. So I don't seem so evil now, huh? Lol.

I don't like looking over ledges, although when I was younger it never bothered me, and I did some pretty reckless things.  I probably put myself in danger too many times, and my brain said, knock that off!  Other than that, there isn't much.  I like bats and spiders and rodents and snakes and all that stuff.  Although I have been known to kill spiders that are poisonous, as well as little jumping spiders after one jumped into my ear.

My main phobia is being afraid to tell people what my phobias are.

Mind you, it may not be a real phobia, as the thought that people might use the knowledge to play tricks on me could be a rational fear.
