I'm looking for a decent wig. One the looks like it could be my hair and not one where I'd want people to know I was wearing a wig. Any suggestions?

Well, this is not necessarily an easy thing to do. There are a number of factors involved in wearing a convincing wig: quality of the wig, it's compatibility with your color and features, how you style it, how well you care for it. For a wig newbie, the best bet is probably to go into a wig shop and be fitted. The people who work in wig stores often are pretty good at reading coloration and fitting. Most are very accommodating to TG people, too, though you might want to call first about this.

While it might generally be said that the best wigs are the most expensive, it's easily possible to look bad in costly wig and good in an inexpensive one. There are different opinions about whether human hair is preferable over synthetic. In my experience, human hair looks much more real than synthetics and lasts longer, though it requires more care. The big push in the wig business these days is for lace front wigs. This is where a strip across the front must be glued to your forehead to give a natural hairline appearance. This can look great and lots of people were them every day, though many don't like to wear adhesives all the time. Opt for a wig with bangs if you don't want to go that way.

BTW, here's a link to a lovely lady I ran across recently on YouTube who reviews a number of inexpensive wigs, most of which that look good on her.

Before I let my hair grow out I was using a full lace front wig. It was made from REAL human hair. REMY is a good type to get. These wigs are mass produced in China so the deals are usually very good. I would recommend finding someone that knows how to cut hair well. Most salons would do a great job because it's real hair. I would get it a little on the long side so that you can trim off the amount you want. Better to have more hair than known to start off with. The lace front is important. I would go with French or Swiss for that. Then add "baby hairs" to it when you order since CIS women have that too.  Make sure that you pay close attention to your measurements when you size yourself. You may want to add a millimeter of space between YOUR hair and THE hair along the hairline and side temple area too. This way you can place it a little over your own hairline and you don't have to shave anything on your end for it to fit well and stay well. You can use special tape for that, but I was using a medical adhesive that they sell just for wigs. Some will last a few days others will last for weeks. And boy do they stick.
I saved so much money going this route rather than trying to do the hair club for men thing. Most mens hairpieces with added hair can go for $700 and up. The place I mentioned has some that start at under $300 dollars for 12 inch long hair! You'll also want to get the knots on the wige bleached (where the hair is knotted to the base of the wig). This makes the knots virtually invisible.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to contact me. I have learned a lot about wigs and types of hair. :)

Thanks for the links. Trouble is I don't have a lot of money to spend and I feel a bit akward about wearing real human hair...

I always go with a fringe though, adhesive scares me.

I was in the same position as you about 5 months ago.

A few girls on here mentioned that going to a wig shop would be the best idea. I was super nervous about the idea of doing it because at the time I was sort of a baby in public and scared.

I ended up mustering up the courage and went with Jen-Jen (member on here). It was a great experience because you can try on a few different styles that fit your face. Its also very educational as well because you can ask the about how to care for your wig etc. I was dead set on getting a human hair wig but ended up going with a synthetic blend wig w/ lace front because they last longer, hold up better as well as they are cheaper then a real hair wig. So in conclusion thats what I would recommend if you'd like to find a quality wig that fits you. Online stinks. :)

We won't go into exactly how many wigs I have, but I have been CDing 10 years and another 4 now of knowing I am TS.  IRL experience, as said, go to an actual wig store and enjoy yourself.  Some stores sell wigs to people with medical conditions (which you have) and will set up personal appointments that will be very pleasant.  Shops like that will be pretty chilly if you show up without an appointment since they also have alopeica ariata, and chemo therapy clients that are even more private than you are. Unless you can get a nerve buddy to go with you though, they are the best.

A cheap human hair wig will look CHEAP and WIGGY and not something you want to go out in.  Some of the less expensive synthetic wigs on the other end, will look wiggy, but also make you look like a GG who is out having fun  IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM and have a grin on your face.  The hair in my avatar is one of my favorite synthetic wigs, and I liked it so much that now I am full time, I colored my own hair to match its color.  It matches my eyes nicely.

Lace front wigs do not have to be attached with an adhesive, but they and all wigs have to be appropriately positioned on your head, and bangs or a fringe need to be cut to your eyes.  For MtF, the position is just barely in front of your natural hair line before MPB set in.  Down too far on your forehead, which is a common malady among early stage CD's or TS ruins both your face and hair.  Too far back and it looks like a wig on a guy which defeats the purpose.

I have used online wig sites, but that was after I found brands of wigs that I liked, Revlon, Louie Ferre, and Jon Renau are the three I prefer.  When I get an online wig, I make sure it is appropriately labeled and boxed, and then take it to a beauty salon for shaping to my face.  WilshireWigs.com, Wigs.com, and Ace Wigs.com are three sites I have used with good luck, and all carry about the same stock and get the stuff out in days.  Shop online to get an idea of styles you would like, and then go to a brick and mortar store and see if they have them, or they can get them.

Good luck on getting some cute locks!!

These are the usual wig newbie complaints. I was the same way at first. Force yourself to try on a human hair wig and sometime anyway. You get over that initial "eek" factor.

As far as cost is concerned, you have to set priorities, I guess. If you're really serious about getting a passable wig, you may have to invest something. Look around, though. You might find something less expensive that works for you. The cheapest solution, of course, is to grow your own hair, if you've got enough. If social stigma is stopping you, a priorities reset can resolve that. When I made the self-portrait in my avatar I wasn't presenting as female FT. I just decided I wanted long  hair and said to hell with it.
