I've done alot research about estrogen on the internet and how people about 40 years of age should only use the estrogen patch. I'm new to this, what does everyone else do? Anyway comments are appreciated....Kayla

Best advice would be to ask your doctor.  What you should use could only be determined after blood test and a complete exam.

If you have any thoughts of self medication, that would be a bad idea (and against our site's rules).

Hi Kayla, welcome to Susan's Place! Sarah is right, and here is our policy on Hormone Replacement Therapy discussions:

8. The discussion of hormone replacement therapy(HRT) and it's medications are permitted, with the following limitations:

A. You may not advocate for or against a specific medication or combinations of medication for personal gain. This is strictly prohibited.

B. You may not discuss the means to acquire HRT medications without a prescription. The discussion of self medication without a doctors supervision is prohibited.

C. The discussion of recommended or actual dosages is strongly discouraged to prevent information obtained on this site from being used to self medicate.

We can not in good conscience condone the self administering of these medications. Not only may self medication be illegal, but HRT medications can cause serious health problems, and many have the potential for life-threatening side effects that can only be detected and prevented with proper medical supervision.

Hope this helps, hugs, Devlyn

That's interesting about the estrodial, my doctor says with my age he worries sbout clotting. I would rather do pill form it's cheaper. I'm a non smoker..thanks all

Am I bizarre in that I don't want to take it in pill form? I have a bad habit of forgetting to take necessary meds for days... sometimes weeks at a time, and this is something that I don't really want to space out on.

Pills are harder on the liver since a good part of the estrogen is taken out by it fairly quickly. That is how patches or shots rate as safer, though some sources do say shots are even riskier dur to chance of OD'ing. Not sure how you can reconcile that against doing a lot of pills or applying more patches. I am an old fossil and do shots. Another couple of women in my group do also. More are on patches. A couple are on pills. I can't say for sure there is an age factor.

Another factor is the type of estrogen. Each formulation hits people differently. The formulation tends to vary with delivery method. Except for perhaps pill form which has it all.

From what I have read far and wide, the patch is usually recommended for people over 40 years of age, due to higher risk of clotting. I'm 45, turned yesterday, and I started at 44, so yea, your doc has the best interest for you.

Hi there, I am 48 at the moment with Hep C (liver disfunction) oestradiol can be administerd with a gel which can be place on any part of the body and slows the release from the blood stream through the liver. Your treating doctor will be informed about this.....Patches I imagine would operate the same way.

I'm 48, healthy, and on pills for HRT (Spiro and Estradiol).

No side effects except the ones I wanted. Liver is normal, per blood tests. I've gained about 5 lbs, but I think that's all on my chest.

...I think for most of us it is a futile effort to try and put this genie back in the bottle once she has tasted freedom...
