It seems the more and more I start to research the more and more I feel lost in a whirl of options. Having no trans people in my life, and not really having any medical or professional connections, I don't even know where to begin to start. There is already a list of people on-line but I want someone I can sit down and meet without having to worry about distance.

I was wondering if any of you could help. Does anyone here know of any reliable/trusted therapists for transitioning in Ohio? Or the Cincinnati area?

Or, if you know anyone special from another state please share. Even if you can't help me maybe someone else is looking for a place to start and will stumble across this thread.

You can try google gender therapists in your area.

I have and it just keeps coming up with endless lists of people with no real information. All of them appear to be equally qualified, since there are no real reviews anywhere to be found. I was just hoping for a positive or negative either way. But a list of names just feels like a gamble.

OK next step is to email them and ask for information. Tell them you are transgender and what support can they offer.

You are paying them for their skill and service, they need to tell what it is.

I googled 'transsexual therapist' and their were a bunch in the Arizona area. I got good vibes from a few of them so I sent them emails. I asked them if they followed the WPATH standards. I told them my goals. Tansitioning, HRT, and SRS. I'm waiting now for their email responses. If I meet them and the chemistry is not good, I'll try another therapist. Remember that they work for you. You are not there to please them.

Psychology Today has a fairly good listing/search. Unfortunately only those that paid to be there are on it. The "gender issues" selection seems to be freely ticked off by almost all providers.

I would first check out state or national level LGBT organizations for providers. If you are lucky there may be a state or local TG organization. Local TG groups are good for references too.

On-Line TG sites such as Susans. Laura's Playground, Dr Becky, et al have provider lists which help.

It took me hours to find one therapist in my area that dealt with LGBT issues when searching online. I haven't met her yet but as she's the only one I've found so far I'm pinning all of my hopes on her.

I went Into lauras playlist for a directory of therapists and then I looked at insurance directory of therapists to see who will accept my insurance

I was pretty lucky with therapist but am having a very difficult time locating an endo and a gp that will work with a transgender in the bellingham wa area. I see my gp in the morning hoping he may be willing to help me find someone to help and I have sent a querry to my insuance provider asking if they would be able to help me locate some medical people to help. otherwise it is off to Seattle where there seem to be more people listed as transgender friendly. I have been looking for a week today locally with no replies from any of the doctors here yet
one day, one step, with grace it will be forward today

Thanks for all the replies! I found a website that lists trans-friendly therapists and doctors for every city in my state (kind of a jackpot).

I just got a response from one and she seems great. I've got an appointment booked for next week so hopefully it works out and I don't have to continue this search.

Send the link to the wiki staff so they can include it

That's awesome! I hope you have a good experience once you get to see her.

Click "Staff List" near the top and message one of the Wiki Staff. Hugs, Devlyn

Also: remember, a therapist relationship is a personal connection. I 'interviewed' a few before finding a good fit because, while the others were lovely, I just didn't click with them.

I don't recommend that site. Any crack pot can go on there and throw you some BS. I tried one from there and she couldn't stop ->-bleeped-<-ting me with religious references. Oh and the fact that she didn't agree with transitioning and tried to connect me with my inner girl when I'm FTM....

I found a ton on psychology today. I'm having trouble finding someone who does electro on MtF. Will any electro do or do you need to find someone who works with MtF?

I noticed a lot of that. Therapists whose treatment methods were Christian values I crossed off the list.

I always recommend someone search for a therapist who is a member of WPATH.  You know that they follow the standards of care, which means they agree with informed consent.  Of course, being a member also is the clearest indication you can get that the therapist has significant knowledge/experience working with transpeople.
