I don't think I could handle the lack of daylight in winter, I share the appeal of being in a remote location. If I didn't need so many medical services both trans related and not, I would move to a small Saskatchewan town.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Saskatchewan.  I grew up there.  I now live in San Francisco.  Ghirardelli Square is to be avoided at all costs.  It's a fine tourist trap, but not the real San Francisco.  It is expensive, but so is NYC.  It is particularly expensive for people who are trying to rent.

NYC and California are good but both are so expensive and restrictive in many ways and I feel will fall in the long term due to being financially unsustainable. My home state of NJ is good for trans rights in many respects but falls short in nearly everything else.

It's sure as hell not Alabama I'll tell you that much.

Other than wanting to move to California for the weather, I'm pretty happy in Chicago, Illinois.  Good resources, good laws.  You can changed your dl as long as you've had some work towards transitioning, i.e. electrolysis, hair transplants, hormones, etc.

Sorry if I'm digging up an old topic, but it seemed like a good one to keep alive. I lived in San Diego briefly a few years ago, but things didn't pan out and the company that was sponsoring me went bankrupt so I couldn't stay. I did love California though as I found it really easy to make friends and people seemed a lot happier than in Australia. I also love Japan and have lots of friends there. Living and transitioning though... I'm not too sure about Australia, I guess the upside would be the support of the health system, but I'd love to just go somewhere and start a new life. Maybe the UK... I have a British passport
