I might be moving there in a month or so, just depends how things pan out.

Anyone got any info on transgender therapists and HRT endo's/gynos?

Does that State's Medicaid cover HRT?

I live in New Orleans (About 4-5 hours away) and used to live in Shreveport, Louisiana (30 minutes from Texas). From what I understand, the State of Texas doesn't allow HRT thru Medicaid. In fact, w/ Governor Perry, I doubt he even allowed the state to take part in the Medicaid extension for those under a certain poverty level. Houston is just now getting around to passing an LGBT non discrimination bill, when all the other major cities in the area (Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, New Orleans, and even Shreveport) have passed one. The south can be a little rough on its citizens, especially if you don't fit the "ideal" mold of a human being....

I live in Austin, not too far from Houston but still too far for me. Still gotta find me a doctor/endo to get back on the hormones, somebody affordable. And I don't qualify for Medicaid, Texas was one of those states that didn't expand it to encompass more, plus I make too little to get any help. Yeah, that makes a lot sense ??? .

No kidding. Compassion is something the south (as a whole) lacks. WWJD is beyond their thinking if it means taking effective action to help a broad people in need.

I meant San Antonio, not Houston XP

I was born in SA. It's a beautiful city. My sister and dad lives there. I'm still fairly close to my sister. The general nature of the people there are pretty kind. I would suggest to learn how to speak Spanish if you don't already. You almost need to be bi-lingual to have a job there.

HOWEVER! Be aware, from my understanding, the County of Bexar will not allow a judgement to change your designated sex on your birth certificate. They'll respect some states judicial standings (like Louisiana), but if you go to them to receive a judgement, you'll get rejected. It may be friendly to people, but it's a rather conservative area.

I live in Houston so I can't give you any info on the locals, although I can tell you my job involves getting people on disability which means I get involved in Texas Medicaid, and I've had transgender clients get Medicaid.  As has been said, HRT is not getting covered any time soon.  My understanding is that it only covers three medications in any event.  Also, we're 5th Circuit, and that Circuit is so conservative it's still trying to figure out how it feels about fire.  Judicial relief for legislative/gubernatorial mistakes (at least the ones we talk about here) usually needs to go all the way to SCOTUS.  That said, bigger cities here are more cosmopolitan and trans-friendly than you'd expect.  San Antonio is growing like a weed, a lot of those are people who came from places like New York, Illinois or California (more jobs here for some reason...), and there are two huge Air Force bases there so the ignorant redneck:real human being ratio is much better than the stereotypes would have you believe.

That said, have you looked into the Obamacare options here?  Medicaid is one thing, but a subsidy on actual insurance might be helpful.
When in doubt, ignore the moral judgments of anybody who engages in cannibalism.

I'm ready just to throw in the towel on all this to be completely honest.   I had state insurance in MN (Blue Cross and Blue Shield) and had to move to WV, spent four months getting my ->-bleeped-<- together and getting a therapist and ->-bleeped-<- here just to pick up and move to San Antonio to start all over again.  All this just a week after my therapist said he's going to write my letter.

I'm real close to saying to hell with it, to hell with wpath, to hell with all the dumb ->-bleeped-<- and just DIY, it isn't worth the hassle of finding therapists that don't exist, to have them make you dance on a table for their stupid letters, and to find endo's or gyno's who are willing to do it.

Information on google is about useless.

I'm on the verge of a huge break down and it looks like all the fighting I've done here in WV was for naught only to have to move to a even more conservative state who completely has their heads in their ass.  I should just escort and DIY.  I'm seriously going to start looking into that.  What is that? Chaturbate or something like that?

Well get your therapist to write a letter and take it to SA with you. Or have them fax it to a doctor of your choice.

What if he refuses?  Then what? Spend another three months with some other psychologist and wait another three months?

Good lord, I've been full time for months now, I've absolutely had it with waiting.  I've got a large chunk of money saved up I might just DIY hormones and be done with it.  This aggravation is entirely too much.

Just because he may refuse doesn't mean it's not worth asking. If he doesn't, then do what you've gotta do to get on them. I know one clinic here in NOLA that will probably prescribe them to you without a letter. They've done it for a couple friends of mine (including myself, but I was already on HRT and living as a female at the time).

If your situation would allow a 3-hour drive each way from San Antonio, I understand there is at least one endocrinologist in Houston who follows the Tom Waddell SOC and doesn't require a letter.  I know the frustration is annoying, but there is a reason you have been trying to get a physician to monitor what hormones do to your blood.

Just searched transgender resources san antonio, there is a physician named Gary P Lawton who actually performs reassignment surgeries there.  I'm sure if he exists in San Antonio, there are certainly transfriendly therapists and endos as well.  His office could most likely refer you to an endo who would accept your current letter.  There is also SAGA - San Antonio Gender Association that has therapists and resources in their page.  Good Luck!  I hear San Antonio is beautiful.

I'm currently in Alaska, but before I moved up here I lived in San Antonio and Austin. I currently Skype with my therapist I started to see in San Antonio, in fact I have a session with him tomorrow. He was the one who helped me out and ultimately got me started on HRT; he is definitely a great guy and is very understanding of transgender issues. If you are looking for a new therapist that is local you could contact him, his name is Darrel Parsons:

http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/name/Darrell_Garcia+Parsons_MSW,LCSW_San+Antonio_Texas_55980

Additionally there is a support group that meets down town every 1st & 3rd Thursday. I personally couldn't stomach the drive through rush hour to get there, but it's an option for you if you are looking to meet with other transpeople in the area:

http://www.sagender.org/

P.S. Make sure that if you  do go, that you allocate enough time to get through rush hour. If I remember correctly it took about an hour and a half to get from Helotes (suburb on the edge of San Antonio) to the meeting area.

As for endocrinologist, I really don't know any. I started HRT up here in Alaska, so I didn't get the chance to meet any in San Antonio.

I hope this helps you out. :)

It's been forever since I posted here but I wanted to second the recommendation for Darrell Parsons. I've been seeing him for about a year now (going through this at my own snail's pace) and he has helped me a ton thus far. My feeling is that he is very eager to help and if you know what you want he's going to assist you, not hinder you. Some of his patients move faster than others...I'm just slow for my own reasons.

Also, Darrell referred me to Keith Wischinski to discuss HRT. I'm calling him Monday to schedule my first appointment. I met Keith briefly at a SAGA meeting many months ago and he seemed very knowledgeable. Keith also produced a documentary called "The T Is No Longer Silent" which can be found on YouTube.

Best of luck with the move and I hope things start looking up for you! I'm just up the road in San Marcos if you ever need to reach out.
