"A middle school boy was told his icy blue dress and blonde wig were 'inappropriate,' even though students were encouraged to dress up as Disney characters for school spirit day."

I trust our future in the youths hands more than current generation of leaders.

Very troubling. You can tell a school feels they're on thin ice when the start trotting out the "disruption" justification, since courts have found it's the *only* reason a school is allowed to restrict free expression.

Wearing a costume is not disruptive, its other people response to it. On that basis its best to discipline those disruptive elements.

If the parents were to complain to the school, and even hint that their lawyer might be contacting the school, I am sure the student could wear any costume to a costume day event -- and probably any other day the student chooses.

Our so called local leaders make unfair and illegal decisions all the time at the local level -- and they stay that way until challenged.  It is easy to get away with most anything until someone complains.  Then it is a different story.

It is too bad it has to be that way, but for the moment, at least, that is the way it is.

Speaking as one of the "current generation of leaders" I need to say that I take strong exception to this remark. I do not believe my age makes me untrustworthy.

I wish I could believe that.

40 years ago, people of my generation were sure that we'd run the country (USA) better than our parents' generation was doing it.  We would put an end to war, eliminate poverty, eradicate racism, live by love instead of hate, etc.

Well, my generation's been running things, and I'd have a hard time claiming that things are being done any better.  Have we put an end to war, or even US participation?  Is poverty gone?  Is hate no longer acceptable in public discourse?

Not to put down the many people who've dedicated their lives (and sometimes lost them) trying to change things, but unfortunately, in my experience, the majority of young people end up not much different from their parents.  Changing things is very, very hard, and happens very, very slowly.

I would just like to note that while California is generally considered to be an ultra-liberal state, this particular incident took place in the Bible-belt of Riverside Co, an area represented in Congress not only by a climate-change denier, but a serious creationist.  In short, about as backward, uneducated and bigoted as you can get anywhere.
