Former Operations Manager at an Engineering Company. We made, let's call them "specialist products".  I took a decent severance package earlier this year (And a big fat NDA lasting 3 years) to be a stay at home parent. It's allowed my partner to finish college at the top of her class - and I'm studying my first year of the CILEx Diploma. For those of you who don't know, it means I'm training to be a Chartered Legal Executive- the non University route to becoming a lawyer.

For now, I'm working at the local outlet of the largest grocery wholesale chain here at least till mid September. Hopefully I can continue after that since I really like the job.

I mainly stock shelves and make sure there isn't too much trash lying around, even though I'm qualified to do more than that. It's just where I'm most useful and I gotta say I'm pretty efficient. ;)

Started there with practical training for my education, did my final examination there as well. :)

I play around with computers for Uncle (Sam, that is). Besides being lots of fun, I get to dress however I wish (as long as it is office appropriate). I can be in a dress and heels one day, and jeans and plaid the next.

Currently, I'm a handmailer for a payment company that also manufactures and personalized debit, gift, and travel money cards. So for eight hours a day I get to sit at my desk and put embossed payment cards into their bespoke packaging. Easy job, easy money. And I get to wear what I want on a Friday, which helps immensely.

My favorite job was when I worked for a company that manufactures Search and Rescue equipment for aircraft (both civil and military). I was employed as a Test Engineer, meaning I found faults and managed to get them working again, and also programming beacons with their distress codes. Fun stuff, but I failed my probation, which I think stems from the managers not understanding my Aspergers.

What an amazing diversity of careers, educations and employment experiences we have in our community.

I was particularly struck by the number of people who have had a medley of career opportunities that are significantly independent of each other and do not follow any particular patterns or paradigms.

Traditionally, you may see employment histories that have relational similarities, i.e. Clerk, to Accounts Receivable, to Bookkeeper, to Accountant.   Of course situations or unknown events may dictate changes in a particular career paths, however it is very enlightening for me to see so many that change the direction of their career so frequently as I have.

It is also interesting that many have held jobs related to social services and community involvement.  This was particularly insightful for me as I have, between driving big rigs, being a bookkeeper, warehouse worker, health claims processor, etc. worked, in several opportunities, with developmentally challenged adults and children.  And also went through the process to become a foster parent, which is now on hold till I have my GCS.

In regard to frequent career changes, I feel, in my case, that it is difficult to truly have known which path to follow when you are faced, from childhood, with the struggles of your own identity.

Falsely thinking, either consciously or sub-consciously, that a drastic change in a career or home address will somehow bring a certain meaning to your life that wasn't there before.  Or, at least dampen the level of pain associated with knowing that the person you see in the mirror, is not your true self.

I also feel that pursuing a career that focuses on social services is a way to connect to, and be a valued part of the community and other people without having expose your true-self.

Hugs
Katie
