What an amazing diversity of careers, educations and employment experiences we have in our community.
I was particularly struck by the number of people who have had a medley of career opportunities that are significantly independent of each other and do not follow any particular patterns or paradigms.
Traditionally, you may see employment histories that have relational similarities, i.e. Clerk, to Accounts Receivable, to Bookkeeper, to Accountant. Of course situations or unknown events may dictate changes in a particular career paths, however it is very enlightening for me to see so many that change the direction of their career so frequently as I have.
It is also interesting that many have held jobs related to social services and community involvement. This was particularly insightful for me as I have, between driving big rigs, being a bookkeeper, warehouse worker, health claims processor, etc. worked, in several opportunities, with developmentally challenged adults and children. And also went through the process to become a foster parent, which is now on hold till I have my GCS.
In regard to frequent career changes, I feel, in my case, that it is difficult to truly have known which path to follow when you are faced, from childhood, with the struggles of your own identity.
Falsely thinking, either consciously or sub-consciously, that a drastic change in a career or home address will somehow bring a certain meaning to your life that wasn't there before. Or, at least dampen the level of pain associated with knowing that the person you see in the mirror, is not your true self.
I also feel that pursuing a career that focuses on social services is a way to connect to, and be a valued part of the community and other people without having expose your true-self.
