In honor of Devlyn, one of the comfort foods from my childhood. It wasn't my fathers favorite  foods as a main dish but when he was gone, we would have a plate of Boston Baked Beans with bread on the side. It also had the advantage that it's pretty cheap to fix and sometimes we were a bit short on money. Click on the image for a better view.

 Dena,
The beans does look good. I like baked beans but prefer good ol' Navy beans with ham hocks. That's is a staple here with my sister and I as it was growing up for those economic reasons you mentioned. I remember Mom cooking many such  penny stretching meals for our family of 7 (at the time) while my dad was out to sea working for this great country of ours. I remember having to wait several days for payday so mom could go grocery shopping and bring home milk for us kids. Stretching meals in those days was a necessity.

Hugs,
   Laurie

I'm imagining those are the vegetarian variant... They look fabulous! I love simple dishes like those... will be making a bean chili in the next few days.

Not likely. Your looking at a pound and a half of bacon ends. You could leave the bacon out and possibly season them with a touch of liquid smoke but I have never nor will ever try that.

I made kroppkakor.  It's potato dumplings stuffed with ground pork, ground veal and onions. I serve it with white sauce, pressed cucumbers and lingonberry compote.

Nice! I serve them with homemade brown bread steamed in a can, or in my case a stainless steel bowl.

Start with a slice of Dave's 60-cal bread, top with avocado, mayo, Griller Veggie Burger topped with hot wing sauce, juicy crispy veggie bacon, lettuce, tomato, close it out with another slice off Dave's 60-cal bread with mayo, Ketchup, mustard. Ore-Ida Tater Tots w/Ketchup... I also like Ore-Ida steak fries. :)

Is it too tacky for me to ask about the humour? Alert... I can be the last one at the table to get the joke. :D Anyway... it sounds like you were inspired to create your own joy there... that's a nice thing. :) Side note, if your are in the UK, my thoughts are with you all given recent events.

More of a late lunch, but my big meal of the day was actually out, at Nopalito on 9th in San Francisco.  I always wanted to try this place.

Little gem salad and huevos de caja for  a late lunch/early dinner.  They have the same attention to detail, freshness, and flavor as NOPA does.

Properly poached eggs, nicely seasoned black beans, and homemade tortilla. Their salad was delicious as well. And they sell the dressing over at Bi-Rite!

Hey everyone. My girlfriend is gonna be working late the next few days. I'd like to have some dinner for her when she gets home but I don't know how to cook very many things. Making her frozen dinners every night would be totally lame. Can you guys make some suggestions for stuff that's easy enough for a kitchen dummy to make? Thanks.

  Hi Lucas,

If you can boil water you can cook pasta. The box or package has instructions. These days you can buy a decent marinara sauce such as Neuman's Own and heat it up in a pan.
Basically you get a large pan, fill it about 2/3 with water add about a table spoon of salt and bring to a boil. Meanwhile heat the sauce in a smaller sauce pan over medium heat. stirring so it doesn't stick to the bottom. when that water is boiling add pasta. It can be any kind spaghetti, linguini, shells etc lower heat to keep it from boiling over and cook per time recommended on package (about 8-10 minutes for spaghetti or linguini. Check to see if it is done by chewing a piece it should be slightly firm (al dente) to softer but not over soft.
Drain by dumping into a strainer and put back in pan. Add a serving spoonful of sauce and stir  well to keep pasta from sticking. Serve pasta on plate with a topping of sauce and  sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

  There's one easy  pasta dish.

The trick to cooking is to taste often and adjust seasoning as you go.  Too many cooks think you can season once but that never works,  and it is better to cook the flavor into the ingredients...

On pasta I like to add olive oil in addition to the salt in the pasta water...
