Based on my experience: Keep it growing. Hair is painfully slow to grow. February 2017 was the last time I went for my pervious 1/4 inch buzz cut. And that hurt so much, but there was no other practical choice back then. I had the tips trimmed once since and to be fair it needs to be done again since they started splicing. Lucky enough I decided to go full time in June of 2017, so at least most people knew. Except my in-laws. I did go through a lot of pain in the first 8 month before it finally had reached a length where I could do something with it. By now it has grown to be about shoulder length. I do want another 4 inches, pretty much center breast.
There are a few things I can already do with my hair but since it is still a bit different in length, I sometimes let it air dry which gives me some nice wavy hair. Many days I actually have to contain it with either a hair band or a Pony Tail. Need the cool breeze in the summer and right now they just keep blowing in my face way too much.
So I just had to live for a long time with stupid comments. Especially from my in-laws. My wife finally blew a fuse and told them (she did not want to for a while longer) which stopped the stupid comments. Her coworkers still make stupid comments but I just avoid them altogether.
Sp if you can deal with comments or if you find a funny reply (like: "No worries, I auditioned for a metal band and they require long hair") you may want to keep going. It just takes too long to grow the,m back.

I haven't cut my hair since Aug 2017. It was only about 1/2" long at that time. It is now 4-5" long. I'm not out to anyone but my wife.
I'm retired, but by Christmas my friends were kidding that I needed a haircut. I see most of my friends during the summer playing golf, etc. It's almost that time of year and I'm not ready to come out yet.
I'm trying to decide whether to cut it short and start again this August or let it keep growing and deal with the jokes?
I hope to be starting HRT very soon.
Have you let your hair grow?
