I remember once going to look at a house where water was dripping down off the light fittings and trying to figure out how the agent could have kept a straight face when they were writing it up in such glowing terms! But the main thing is, you're fixed up now.
While scouting places online, I am just amazed at the photos they post to showcase the place. I keep thinking, why don't you put away the paint cans and clear the cleaning supplies off the counter before taking the photos?
There were some places I ruled out immediately because a close look at the baseboards, cabinets, and door trim in the photos revealed that they had simply slapped some paint down instead of doing a proper paint job. They simply painted over the old, chipped paint. And why did you run the electrical wiring on the outside of the wall?
Or they show the outside of the house that needs paint or new siding, or has a pile of junk in the backyard. Sorry, but I don't want to rent a pile of old wooden pallets, don't want to get rid of them myself, and I certainly don't want to look at them.
If this is the level of care and maintenance being done, how do I know if they just painted over a bunch of mold? Or what can I expect if I have a repair that needs to be done while living there?
Sorry, but... hard pass.
The place I am in now was a new building (I was the first tenant to move in), but we still had to deal with construction dust (drywall) that was never cleaned. Appliances still had bits of Styrofoam packing stuck to them.
The place I am moving into is a couple of years old, so hopefully the previous tenant got all the issues worked out while they were there. It sat empty over the winter, so it is getting cleaned and inspected this week before I go down and do my inspection next week.
