Quote from: Lori Dee on June 04, 2025, 12:58:31 PMThe lease will show my move-in date as June 13th. And I will pay pro-rated rent for that month. I wanted to hold the place so it would be taken off the market. It is now showing as unavailable.

I have quite a few VA appointments this month, one tomorrow, so I will still be finishing up here before I can get down there. These are final appointments and goodbyes to my healthcare team that have been taking good care of me for years. I also want surgery recommendation letters from them since I have been their patient for so long. Then I can start care in Colorado later this year.

So you locked the place in for you.  That is one way to do it for sure.

I will pay rent on my current place and the new place for June and July. But both rents will be prorated, so I won't be paying full price on both at the same time. I'll pay full month here and half month there, then half-month here and full month there. So it isn't too bad, and I know exactly where I am moving to. I hate uncertainty.

The last time I moved, I gave the manager notice and quickly found a new place here in town. I didn't know it at the time, but the new building hadn't been built yet!  :icon_yikes: From the time I had to leave my old place, it would be six weeks before the new place was ready to move into.

Fortunately, I am a survivalist and had everything I needed. I moved all of my stuff into a storage unit and went camping for six weeks. I did some prospecting, exploring, rockhounding and just enjoyed being out in Nature. Until Mother Nature decided to bomb me with a wicked hailstorm that tore holes in my tent.

I took lots of pictures of flowers and butterflies, and stuff. I enjoyed it, but it was very nice to have a hard roof over my head and air conditioning.  ;D

Wow, Lori! Great bunch of photos. That's exactly my kind of place. I especially love the wildflowers. Amazing Calochortus. I had no idea Monarda and Rudbeckia grew wild there. Fantastic stuff. Thank you for sharing.

Why is moving often so much harder than it should be? I remember once going to look at a house where water was dripping down off the light fittings and trying to figure out how the agent could have kept a straight face when they were writing it up in such glowing terms! But the main thing is, you're fixed up now.

My flat had just been refurbished when I moved in, its lasted well but carpet in hall is starting to show signs . Have a landlord inspection next week so better get cleaning! Not that they look at that, its just to make sure I havent damaged anything and I have a few things to report.

While scouting places online, I am just amazed at the photos they post to showcase the place. I keep thinking, why don't you put away the paint cans and clear the cleaning supplies off the counter before taking the photos?

There were some places I ruled out immediately because a close look at the baseboards, cabinets, and door trim in the photos revealed that they had simply slapped some paint down instead of doing a proper paint job. They simply painted over the old, chipped paint. And why did you run the electrical wiring on the outside of the wall?

Or they show the outside of the house that needs paint or new siding, or has a pile of junk in the backyard. Sorry, but I don't want to rent a pile of old wooden pallets, don't want to get rid of them myself, and I certainly don't want to look at them.

If this is the level of care and maintenance being done, how do I know if they just painted over a bunch of mold? Or what can I expect if I have a repair that needs to be done while living there?

Sorry, but... hard pass.

The place I am in now was a new building (I was the first tenant to move in), but we still had to deal with construction dust (drywall) that was never cleaned. Appliances still had bits of Styrofoam packing stuck to them.

The place I am moving into is a couple of years old, so hopefully the previous tenant got all the issues worked out while they were there. It sat empty over the winter, so it is getting cleaned and inspected this week before I go down and do my inspection next week.

Laziness or not thinking clearly.

Is this in a large complex or a small one?

That is true. These places are managed by property management companies on behalf of the owners. Many of the places in the Colorado Springs area are owned by military personnel who are deployed elsewhere. I assume that they would move back home afterward. Maybe I just have a little more "pride of ownership," so I want things done correctly and to look nice. You can ask a higher price that way.

Better condition is the way to go.

It is amazing that some people trash places.

It is also a bad thought line of "I need to keep the door closed because I am no longer renting, someone else is no longer paying for the extra energy to keep the door open."

It is like they do not care if "someone else is paying."  Yet, rents are higher to try to compensate for this type of behavior.  So they are paying in a way.  Still, not the same as seeing your own utility bill to pay.  Some landlords require the tenant to pay utilities and that takes care of this nonsense.

I am tired of the government spending our money.  Plus this baloney of "let the rich pay" is silly as what will happen when you tax them too much?  They leave.  Many flee high tax states.  Look at NY and California for real examples.

I dont know which is worse, the horrible pictures with stuff every where or the staged pictures showing everything beautiful until you drive to see it and find the place needs a lot of work. Realators are right up there next to lawyers in my book. They keep a straight face and try to get you to ignore the obvious.
Good luck on your move.

Love the pics, Lori. My favorite was the fairy ring. Nothing but good thoughts as you prepare to move to colorful Colorado (I think that's their slogan, Montana's is 'gold and silver'--everyone has their priorities).

Just got off the phone with my dad. My plans to visit with him for Father's Day will have a change of venue. He fell and chipped the upper part of his leg bone near the hip. Called the Greater Trochanter, it is not serious. The hip structure is sound, so no surgery is needed, but he will be immobile for a while. Then, 4-6 weeks of physical therapy. So I will have a short visit with him at the hospital instead of at their home.

I'm so sorry, Lori. That's not the place we want to visit anyone we love. I'm glad it's not serious, but still... I hope he recovers quickly and fully. And I hope you'll enjoy your visit with him. Maybe you can wheel him outside and be in fresh air together.

Thanks, Pema.

He is in very good hands. He and my mom have commented that it is the only hospital that has really good food. So good that if they are in the area, they will go there for lunch instead of to a restaurant. I have never been there, but I have plenty of family members who have, and they all agree that the care is top-notch. I am hoping for a nice visit, but that may not be possible if certain other family members are there also visiting. We will see how it goes.
