This tuck is only really needed to hold back that tell-tale bulge in front in really tight skirts or dresses.
And for that reason, it's best to avoid tight skirts and dresses, particularly when you're starting out. Besides, those outfits are likely to send the wrong message to any guys you meet. Even if that's what you want eventually, it would be best to wait until you have more experience.
Here's another trick: try putting a panty liner inside your panties. Sometimes that helps smooth out and hide any telltale bulge.
Oh yes, I agree that thigh highs are MUCH more practical than pantyhose. Pantyhose only make sense when you're wearing a miniskirt. And miniskirts are risky when you're starting out.

What I have found is to go to any department store lingerie area and buy firm control shapewear in a high leg brief style. ... Don't worry about the sales people looking at you funny. Really, they don't care where their commission is coming from.
Great advice, with one caveat. Most salecritters don't care, but once in a while you'll run into a twit. I find it helps to prepare a cover story in advance. Say it's for your wife. Know her name and hair color.
Oh, and in the US, anyway, when I pay in cash, department stores often ask if I want to open a credit account (10% off your first purchase!). I usually respond with something like "We already have a credit card, and she usually pays it. So I use cash for gifts."
