About 15 members of the Queens United Against Hate Crimes coalition fanned out on the sidewalks surrounding Flushing High School on Friday. They aimed not just to hand out fliers, but to make a connection with people.

Marisa Ragonese, the director of Generation Q, a youth services program for lesbian, gay and transgendered teens, organized the effort in response to the beating of Jack Price, a gay man who was brutally beaten in College Point, Queens while walking home from a deli.

Prosecutors say the two suspects in the case shouted anti-gay slurs during the attack.
