^This. I think you should plan a "Okay, I will travel, there, then there, then there, for X months. Then I'll set down there and get work/school/whatever."
You do what you want, and truly, for some people, it's been the most enriching experience of their lives to "just go". But make sure you "just stop" at some point. Don't "I'll see when I'm there"; it's too risky. Have a plan for after; don't wait for an opportunity. Murphy's Law states that those will probably not come if you arrange it so that you would need them. (This isn't serious, but the bottom is: try to depend on chance the least possible.)
