Hello!

I am currently making a video game for the android phone.  It is a classic RPG based in a world of extreme prejudice and segregation.  The heroes are forced to form a band, rise  up and cause a revolution on the corrupt government, earning equality and accpetance for all walks of life.

One character is a FTM Transsexual.

The concept for him is done (kinda).

He's going to be a mutant with electrokenisis, the ability to generate and contorl electricity.  In the game world, he runs the underground railroad for people who are persecuted.

Stylewise, he's going have an Elite Beat Agents/Men In Black/Ninja feel to him.  His weapon of choice is a metal staff which he uses as a lightning rod, helping him to contorl his powers.

This design is of course open to change, should any of it be offencive, silly or a better idea is passed along.


However, my knowledge of this community and the issues it goes through is very limited.

So if you had a soap box and a captive audience, what would you like to say?

It depends if he wants to be political about being FTM or not. Does he want to emphasize his status as trans or does he want to be in stealth?

Like I would fight for acceptance and equality but would remain in stealth. But some people wouldn't.

I think stealthy would be the best suited for the game itself.  As people who are different are arrested and exiled in the game world.  And would be a good surprize for the player.

If you would keep it a 'surprise', how exactly do you plan on revealing his trans status?
Plus, it sounds awesome.

I have absoluetly no idea

Which is why I'm here.  How would YOU like the average joe to find out that the character they've been playing for the last X hours wasn't born a guy?

Accidentally?
They just tell them?
Humourously?
Through romantic involvement?

If stealth, no way to be shown as trans as that is what stealth is.  There is an inbetween tho. Just make him not be open to the world about himself maybe more open to your 'resistance' members.

If he is stealth maybe it doesn't have to be revealed that he is FTM. You could make small hints and situations throughout the game like, maybe his status id card or something has F on it. then maybe one of his super hero friends sees it and they ask what that is about he can just be like 'uhh well there was a situation when I was born, I was declared female at birth' but not actually admit still that he is trans. kind of make him always beat around the bush maybe. stuff like that? not sure how in depth the game goes.

Hmmm.... okay.  I like that idea.

Obviously a great deal of trust needs to be gained first.

So what would his feelings be around revealing this?

Does he want to so that he can be accepted fully with his friends?
Does he feel like he has too even though he doesn't really want to?

That will work because I want this game to be deep.

He's the 4th character out of 12 that the player will meet, so there will be lots of time and situations for many little hints to appear

if his out and proud trans then give him some cool trans earings (got some myself)
boy necklace.
or tatoos.. ^^ there always cool

oh I forgot the bracelet I guess many Tboy got them to hide the fact of having small wrists.

If being different would get you killed, wearing jewelry would be the last thing you do. Well unless all men in your game world wear the same type jewelry. 

It would not be unreasonable for your FTM character to be part of a resistance with a friend ( or not so friendly) person from before transitioning or attempting to transition. They would know the past and you could have conversations between those people on some hassles the FTM needs to deal with to stay in known to the majority of others. I don't think most of us want to be 'out and proud' and even less so on a world that is antagonistic toward you.

I think it's really awesome you bothered to come on here and ask us all what we think, so props for that!

As to the character, I think the best thing would be to keep the fact that they're trans quite hush, and like other members have said, to just hint at it through the game, or have him be more open with the resistance people. One thing I think is important though is that you don't ever treat it like a bad thing, and don't have any of the characters then call him 'she' or treat him like any less of a man than they did before they knew.

I think the best thing for the community itself would be to not have it become that big of a deal, and have him just be a normal character who just happens to be trans.

Okay, so his trans side is going to be hush, but dropping hints every now and then would be great.

What kind of hints would those be?  I need examples!

yeah, I found it in a folder I read about a queer person who wrote down his thoughts about gender, and sexuality, it was a very interesting reading and this quote is diffidently my favorite because its so true.

If your character is out and proud then add the transsymbol somewhere ^^ but all these things as necklace and so on is cool in general.

There's going to be lots of locations plus if I can manage it, I would like each character to have their own theme.  Final Fantasy 6 style!

Hehe that's what I do... themes... like Final Fantasy 6.  Their composer, Nobuo Uematsu, is my all time favorite composer... I have a similar style as him.  The idea is to write a main theme, and then compose many related themes for all the characters that play around the same keys or chord progressions.  I will see what I can come up with... but at the moment I'm in the middle of trying to change my style up... I've become too comfortable with certain keys.  For example, I could write you a symphony in B flat minor =P
Oh, the song I did was for a free server in Ultima Online... nothing fantastic.  It's a fun song though =)
Here is a recent video of me improving... the Theme like songs don't really start until 5:40.  I also discarded a lot of this music... it's not my favorite work that I've done, except for what happens at 9:25... I like that =)

Wow... okay... wow... you seriously have skillz.  I'm jealous!!

When listening to you play, two other examples popped into my head, first a game called perfect cherry blossom, which has beautiful music!

I seriously dont' see why we can't have the game's music be all or at least mostly beautiful piano music.  *ponders*
