You know, this was confirmed by my friend who reads Twilight books. In the third one Edward rips his girlfriends uterus open with his teeth to get the baby out.

I might see the third movie just for that. Nah, I'll probably just ask him what they did. Not worth $10.

Meh...black sheep here... not a big fan of the first, but I liked the second, mostly Jacob\wolf scenes.

Don't get it! WHY are these two guys - Edward & Jacob - so enamored and fighting over this girl Bella who, to my tastes at least, is otherwise one class A dissatisfied/dissatisfying pain in the arse!
"But it's no use now," thought poor Alice, "to pretend be two people!
"Why, there's hardly enough of me left to make one respectable person!"

I have neither read nor watched Twilight, so I don't really have an opinion. But I do have to believe that this series receives a lot of unfounded hatred. It's the cool thing to hate on Twilight right now. =/

I have no interest in it at all, though. I've never liked vampires or werewolves. But my opinion will stay neutral because I hate it when people form opinions over things they haven't even given a chance.

Ummm... the reason why a lot of people hate it is because they gave it a chance. Some of us have actually seen the movies and read the books and have something to go off of. A lot of people don't like it because the fact of sparkly vampires turns them off(which is valid imo, it's just not their thing), but what a lot of people actually hate about it is some of the disgusting and most sexist things that go on in the book. Not to mention the bad influence and standards it gives for young girls. Apparently if you're going through a break up, you should start doing dangerous stunts and attempt to kill yourself because every time you get close to death you hear your 'one true love'. Apparently this is all OK and a sign of true love! Stuff like that alone isn't unfounded hatred. And you know, I'm not saying people shouldn't have high standards and that romance is bad, but there is no romance in this. All I see is a sexual predator and manipulator.

The whole, "You just hate it because it's popular to hate on things popular." stance has never worked for me. Apparently I can't say that the plot in Avatar wasn't executed well(note I'm not asking for originality, just good execution) without someone thinking I'm just hating on Avatar because it's the 'cool and edgy' thing to do.

Oh I know that there are people who dislike Twilight for valid reasons, I just am not convinced that they're in the majority.

I've seen many Twilight haters openly admit that they had never seen or read any Twilight at all.

Trust me, there are people who will completely disregard things due to their popularity. In fact it's quite common. Besides when somebody "cool" starts hating on Twilight, people who are with them will automatically assume that it is bad and start hating on it as well, even if they've never watched or read it at all.

I know we like to think otherwise, but it is a reality that these things happen. I've done it before, it's easy to take somebody's word for it, and then start saying the things that they did like you are an expert at the subject even though you've never watched or read it. I know this happens. And I do believe that Twilight is a victim of it. It may be badly written, I don't know, I don't care. I just have a hard time believing that the 'haters' have much to back up their opinion. Because opinions as radical as those of the 'haters' could so rarely be held by somebody who has actually watched or read such series. And Twilight has A LOT of haters.

First: I read the books, they were good in a way. The movies tore what I liked apart.

Second: Those things that Lachlann mentioned that people hate (sexism etc.) are to blame on the auther IMHO. She was mormon. If you know anything about the LDS faith, then you know what I'm talking about. End of story.

Third: I found out about the author after I finished the saga and I feel dirty. Horribly dirty. Though I'd share that.

I just have a hard time believing that the 'haters' have much to back up their opinion. Because opinions as radical as those of the 'haters' could so rarely be held by somebody who has actually watched or read such series. And Twilight has A LOT of haters.

The people who I've heard and seen rant about Twilight the most are the ones who have actually read or seen the movies. The people who just think it's silly or stupid but haven't read the books, in my experience at least, have been the ones who don't genuinely hate it and don't feel the need to criticize it at every turn. People who tend to be obsessed with hating things have this weird train wreck syndrome where they actually follow what they hate. I, myself, don't feel the need to bash Twilight at every turn or am obsessed with hating it, but I do know what it stands for and I really don't like what it's promoting.  But we don't exactly have any hard proof that haters are mostly this or that other than our personal experiences.

And I'm not denying that there are people out there who hate on things just because they're popular, but then again, if there were so many of these pretentious twats then the things they were hating on wouldn't be popular, therefore they are in the minority. Even the actor who plays Edward thinks that Stephanie Meyer is a bit wrong in the head after reading the book. The same guy who has fan girls who worship him thinks that there is something wrong with the book, obviously his influence has done nothing to the popularity of the series but he does know what's going on. It takes more than just being a 'cool' or 'hot' guy to influence the masses with an opinion. Believe it or not, but some people love something so much they don't care what other people think.

Again, some people dislike it because it's badly written or has sparkle vampires, but that's none of my concern with the book. Honestly, I think hating on it because vampires sparkle is a weak point, but if you don't like something then you don't like it. The bigger issue as I've said is the sexism, anti-feminism, chauvinism and unhealthy relationships that it promotes.

There are girls and women of all ages who suddenly want boyfriends like Edward Cullen and Jacob Black despite the fact that these relationships are unhealthy and abusive. People should be taking issue with that. Stephanie Meyer could have written the story differently in a way to empower women and say, "hey if this stuff goes down then get the hell out of the relationship!" instead of bringing us back to, "women should stay in the kitchen, have babies, do whatever their husband says, yadadadada" mixed in with some really messed up psychotic ways of thinking and pass it off as OK.

I'm fairly certain psychologists and psychiatrists have had a field day with this book before.

And I honestly do get tired of people who can't shut up about how much they hate Twilight, but you know, sometimes when they do rant about it they are very justified.

To be fair, not all Mormons are insane nor believe in everything that's spoon fed to them. I grew up in a Mormon family and honestly we were just like any other family and I was always taught to always question what I was being told at church, not just by my family, but by the actual church itself. I do take issues with quite a few of the teachings, but again, not everyone takes them super seriously either.

But Stephanie Meyer took some of the very iffy parts of the religion and made them even creepier in her books imo.

Disgusting, poorly written, sexist teenage vampire romance prolefeed. I would know, too, because I haven't read the books.

Twilight hater here!  There wasn't an option for "I hate it with a fiery, burning passion" so I chose "Ew, sparkle-pyres!"

QuoteThe sparklyness aside...

It's misogynistic and disgusting.

Exactly.  I actually wrote a paper about it for my college English class...  Got an A+ ;D

Speaking as one who read the first book to see what all the hype was about, I have to say that it was the most poorly written and possibly the most sexist book I've ever read.  Please, how many times can you compare the guy to a marble statue and have him feel "chagrined" over something?  -Gag-

Edward and Bella have nothing to base a relationship off of, and Bella soon has even less personality than she began with after her undead pedophile cuts her off from her family and friends.  It's just incredibly sexist, and it worries me that so many people set their boyfriend standards to a manipulative, controlling, stalker.  What happened to the nice guys you never had to worry about kidnapping or killing you?

Exactly the same with me.  I hate how Meyer and the FLDS in Texas and so on give normal, sane Mormons a bad name.  I was so not raised to be owned by my boyfriend/husband/spouse...

I hate to admit it but I liked it although I found the stories rather simplistic... but hey it's fantasy so no problem.

Metamorph

I saw it for the first time on DVD the other day. I had low expectations cos of this thread but i didnt think it was that bad. i agree that the sparkles thing is a bit daft since i prefer vampires more typical portayal. i do think its odd how its become an obsession to so many but overall it was an alright film. yet to see the sequels.

I thought it was o.k. it was fun to watch. Some of it was silly but who cares it's just a movie. But then again I like silly pop songs too. Uh oh I can hear the hipsters weeping now.

I just died a little bit on the inside.

I'm about ready to skulk off in my plaid and cords and put on a record. /sigh.

The movies were decent...I adore the books though.  I understand the complaints people have about it, but that doesn't make me like it any less.  I don't take it as a guide for real life relationships.  It had a somewhat simplistic writing style and cheesy storyline, but who cares?  It's a fantasy novel, the only thing that matters to me is the picture it paints and how it makes me feel.

People can say what they want about the "gay sparkly vampires".  And sure, it isn't a good portrayal of how a real love life should work.  That doesn't make the drama any less exciting, and it doesn't make Meyer's characters any less fun to fantasize about...

I'm not sure who first said this, but there's a quote about a scene in the first book that goes "there's more sex in that one paragraph than all the snogging in Harry Potter."

wow talk about your necromantic thread raisers lol

But back to topic.

I cannot stand the series.

1. The fact that a 150 some year old guy falling in love with a 16 year old is pretty damn creepy.

2. The boy has some serious issues with stalking Bella.

3. His disposition is so depressing you feel numb after watching the movie. I've seen vampire movies before where the vampire is depressed over his immortality but having to explain his depression on this subject in every damn scene for 3 movies is a bit much.

4. They're not vampires. They are simply people who are addicted to blood who can live forever. They seem to be very messed up mages than vampires. Hell, they don't even have fangs.

5. Bella needs to see a therapist

6. We know he loves Bella. They don't have to remind me 40 times in each movie. I get the picture.

The first movie was "ok." It really wasn't anything to write home about. Out of five stars I would give it 3.0 to 3.5. The second movie was pretty much sex appeal. let's see which guy looks the sexiest. I gave that movie 2.5 stars.

The third movie was so boring to me that I took the blue ray out of the player about half way through it. I VERY RARELY stop a movie halfway through. I would say in about 30 years of watching movies, I have done this about 5 times.

I feel bad for the people who got twilight tattoos.

Believe it or not, I actually found the movies FAR better than the books.  Not that they were any good, but the books are that bad... oh but I can't stop reading/watching... like crack... haha :)

I have read all of S.M.'s work and she has delusions of adequacy as an author.  I guess 'the host' was alright...

I don't understand how I can dislike the movies... rant and rave about how bad they are... and then plan on watching the next one..
Like a car crash... must.. slow.. down.. and look...

Edward is a creeper... Jacob is Emo...
