I was talking to my mom this evening and told her about how, when I was eleven or twelve, I thought I was going to turn out to be a boy or at least part boy. She said she thinks that's normal. Is it? Do all kids just starting puberty think they're going to be the opposite sex or at least partially the opposite sex?

It's normal for trans kids...

Yeah, it happened to me. I don't know if any cispeople it happened to though.

all my brothers and local boys looked forward to puberty as a chance to get hairy and be a step closer to being allowed to go boozing.

Actually, I believe this is one of the markers that therapists look for when helping people decide whether they are transgendered.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

Probably pretty normal from my reading of peoples autobiographies here and elsewhere.

It was the case for me. For any person who knows they are trans, regardless of age, this is the case.

I never thought I would grow up to be a girl, but I remember being very jealous of girls and thinking I would make a much better girl than a boy.

Disgusting

I never did; then again, the differences between the sexes was made very clear to me and I was never given any room/reason to doubt or question it.  It wouldn't be too surprising a thing to hear, though.

Yes, at least I hoped I would grow as little masculine as possible (first, I even hoped I would grow like a female, with luck). And surprisingly, it somewhat turned out this way (I'm shorter and have a weaker build than my male relatives, and have gynecomastia... when I was 15 I had very feminine buttocks too. I also have a very young sounding voice, while my older brother has a deep voice... I am smaller than him and my father in everything, which could have been worse for a start)
This is ok, I guess.

Puberty, no. I knew I was screwed by the time I started first grade. Though, I did keep on praying things might change for a long time. Still do  ;)

Are you sure she didnt mean its normal for trans kids?

For the record I also thought I would grow into a man. I knew the difference between girls and boys. I knew everyone around me thought I was a girl but it just never occured to me I would go through female puberty. I always looked forward to the day I would become as big and as strong as my dad.

lol I thought I'd turn out to be some bizarre biological anomaly. (I didn't know about intersex people at the time hence why I thought it would be bizarre.)

Hi,

This of cause will come down to how we are wired ,

For some yes of cause others no  what happens to one child does not allways happen to another,

Those that belive they are trans then yes,& some of us are different in my case being intersexed,

At age 10 i knew what i was. I never ? nd that & i knew later on i would live as a female / women.

Well its just there in the way your wired, Im 65 i live as a normal woman & who is accepted as one. to late to change that  im just to well known .

Lots of kids liked to dress up no issues there, some wonted to be girls  yet thier bodys looked different & many had a mental image of them selfs being different & each one has thier own story to tell.

...noeleena...

I didn't think this, but I know of others who did. Just depends on things.

I totally thought puberty would give me a functioning penis. To the point that in sex ed I paid attention to all the accidental erection warnings and not the info about periods. When I first got my period I was so lost.

I got those too in school! The warnings, haha. They made it seem like it would be so scary. "Sometimes, the penis will get hard and this can be very disturbing and embarrassing at first.........."

Embarrassing I can buy, lol.

I was never embarrassed by having erections qua erections - I was embarrassed to be having erections caused by boys (and somehow assumed the difference was written on my forehead) :).
